290.0. "Turkish Vans" by LARVAE::REIN (The Future is CLEAR...) Wed May 20 1992 15:31

    Can anybody speak Turkish?

I have 10 Turkish Van kittens to name, 6 boys & 4 girls. I would like
to call them by Turkish names and have some ideas but would like
translations. For the first litter of 3 kittens, I would like the
    following in Turkish:

    Little kitten
    Biggest kitten
    Only boy

For the other 7, 5 girls & 2 boys, I would like to call them real
Turkish names, and know the meaning.

    Thank you in advance. -Eric-

I only know a few words, they could help you.

little	= kck (pron. about as german 'ktschk')
big = bjk (pron. about as german 'byk' or 'bik')

I also heard my turkish girlfriend call her cat as 'ak' (pron. 'uck')
but i never asked if it meant really 'cat'...

When I was trying to name my cattery, I wanted it to be in Thai (since
Korats are from Thailand). I found a Asian, and then a Thai notes file.
I'm not sure, but there may be a Turkish notesfile, or something that
is similarly close. Look in VTX under the conferences topic (I forget
the keyword) and there 'might' be a conference that's Turkish, or
    Europeon. It's worth a shot!

Some friends asked me to use this conference to find some information for them.
They are interested in a cat that they said is called a Van cat, They said these
cats are from some place in Turkey, that they have long white fur, they have one
green eye and one blue eye, and they like swimming. I'm not sure I believe this.
However, if there really is such a creature and you know about it, do you have
any idea how my friends, who live in south east England, can obtain one?

Thanks,

Gordon.

I must be going crazy - the heat has got to me - does this note really
	keep diappearing!!!!!!!!

the author of 290 looks as if he breeds them but he's in the US.,
I read an article in a Sunday supplement about 6 months ago which
detailed a breeder in the UK, had some wonderful pictures of them,
white with a bit of ginger on their heads, odd eyes,
like water......but unfortunately, I did not keep the article.

try the adverts in the cat magazines, or look for people in shows who
	breed/show them.

Alice, what color is Harley?? You may either have a Turkish Van or a
Turkish Angora. The difference between a VAN and an angora is
basically the COLOR of the cat and the size. Vans have light markings
on their head/tail only and the rest of the cat is white. They're also
a bit larger than the angoras (although some angoras are larger than
    others).

MANY people confuse the two breeds because they are SO similar. In
fact, the Vans aren't accepted as a different breed in any of the
associations in the US. They're only accepted as Turkish Angoras with
    a VAN coloring.

Harley has the Van markings, red on the head and tail. He is 14.6 lb
and is 22 inches when you measure him from tip of his nose to the tip
of his tail. He is a big boy. He can stand on his hind legs and reach
the top of our counter with his front paws.

There is an article about Turkish vans in the may-june CATS magazine.
Shows a picture, gives history, gives physical specs., even mentions
the part about water. The description of their personality makes
    sound quite endearing.

    RE: CATs magazine.

On the cover of the CAT magazine there is a picture of a Turkish Angora
oddly enough my friend Booboo is an exact image. It is as if some one
put her picture on the cover. The same exact gray marks on the head
except Booboo has odd color eyes :-)
