280.0. "Homeless cats" by KAHALA::GOODWIN () Fri May 15 1992 08:50

Well, just call me Sandy Merritt.

There are 6 houses on my street, and 13 cats. When I moved in, I asked
my landlord (who lived there up until then) if all the cats were taken
care. Oh, yes, he said. Well, I started feeding a couple of them,
because they looked neglected. One of them used to belong to my
landlord, and spent all his time on our porch. Another one showed up
after a couple of months after we moved in and spent a lot of time under
our porch and sleeping on our ourside bench. Another was OBVIOUSLY a man
unto himself, and comes around for food only -- won't let anyone near
    him.

I just talked to my neighbor about all the cats. He has been feeding
these three and letting them sleep in his barn. He also has four cats
that he takes care of (keeps them healthy and clean).

So I'm starting with the scruffiest looking one. A black and white with
a white face, and one black front leg, one white front leg. I thought
it was a female. I brought him/her to the vets this morning - he thinks
its a male. Anyways, first the feline leukemia test. If everything is
ok, I'll bring him back Monday for shots, dental work, parasite
testing, A BATH!!! and a flea dip.

    His name? Whiteface.

Once he's taken care of, I'll start on the other friendly one. He needs
to be neutered along with everything else. He's a black and white
tuxedo cat. I've been calling him Black and White Fred.

The other stray I don't know if I'll be able to catch him for a while
yet. After feeding him all winter, this week was the first time he let
    me touch him.

Plus I have Eddie Haskell, a pampered spoiled furface who does not like
to see me giving attention to other cats. He has attacked all three of
these cats at different times when he was able to escape (he's an
    indoor cat).

    I think I need a second job.

Uh-oh, Sandy, you've got competition. You'll have to give your "back
porch" sign over to your new competitor now. :^)

It would be my pleasure to give my sign up to Nancy.....but I doubt
I'm through with it yet!!! There is still one more big black long
hair that visits twice a day....and a little orange fellow that
is SOOOOOO cute!! Both of these guys hates humans...so this is
not going to be a short process.!!! I just look back at where
J.C. and Van Gogh were a year ago...but now they are my two most
loving cats that won't leave my side. That is the most wonderful
    feeling in the world!!!!

Nancy...you have all my moral support and best wishes. My only
suggestion would be NOT to get to attached so that when you do
finally get them you can work towards finding them homes. That is
one of my major problems...I tend to fall in love and keep them all!!
You will find it will be harder to give up the ones that you had
to work the hardest to gain their trust.

It gets very frustrating at times when you think you got the last one...
and lo and behold a new stray moves in!

Keep us posted on the captures!!!!

280.5Update on WhitefaceKAHALA::GOODWINMon May 18 1992 11:5022
Whiteface passed his feline leukemia test, so this morning I dropped
him off for his shots, fecal tests, and a bath. I'm going to wait on
the dental, until I see what Black and White Fred is going to need.
He's scheduled for his first appt on Wednesday.

The other homeless he-man cat (Whitey, maybe will be renamed to Rocky)
has decided he likes it very much at my house although he won't let me
touch him. However, he wants is all to himself.... he's been chasing
Whiteface and Black and White Fred off. Whiteface doesn't go too far,
and just tries to ignore him, but Black and White Fred is much more
timid. I guess I'm going to have to let Whitey know who the boss really
    is - ME.

And of course, Eddie Haskell thinks he can take them all on! His dukes
are up and he's ready to claim his own!

Not get attached??!!! Whiteface thinks I'm the cat's meow now. How I can I
    not get attached.

This could be fun if it weren't so expensive!

My main goal in working with the strays/ferals in the neighborhood
is to catch them and get them fixed so the population does not
continue to grow. There are a few noters in this file that spent
years working on the neighborhood overpopulation problem.....and
have finally won the battle. They are my idols....their success
    stories keep me going!

Your right...it is very expensive....frustrating.....hard work...
but it is very rewarding! And in the meantime...the skunks, opposums
and racoons are eating very hardy too!!

I agree - use caution in setting out food. I haven't seen racoons, but
I have seen what I think are racoon tracks. I have seen skunk and
possom. So I only put food out when the cats are there, and I try to
pick up the dishes right away. It didn't take them long to figure out my
    schedule!

I no longer leave food out after dark, since a raccoon did $600 and
counting worth of damage to my roof. Cats will come around in the
light for food, raccoons won't, and the theory is, if there's no food
for the raccoon, he'll leave (it says here.....)

This looks like a nice place to sleep; I'll just rip up some of these
shingles and make myself a nice comfy entrance....

I confess to leaving out peanuts (in the shells) for the squirrels. We
have about 10 that come around for nuts, and just this morning one let
me pet her (HER rules - I can only pet her tail, and it HAS to be
back-handed). We have never been bitten, although one will playfully
nip - but never hurt. Doesn't even leave a mark. And she doesn't do
    it unless REALLY provoked.

'Coons and skunks leave the nuts alone...but BOY, do we have a lot of
blue jays hanging around! We've stopped leaving out pizza crusts
because it encouraged the little black and white "kitty-kitties" to
    hang around.

Well, call me a sucker, but I am now "delivering" the plate
of food to one of my adoptees....My latest acquisition, Nique,
won't let Moochie near the house or barn without chasing her
off. Now I know why Moochie was so thin...she's low cat on the
totem pole in this neighborhood, and never got any food! ALL the
    neighborhood cats pick on her....):
If I see Mooch outside, I fix her a plate of catfood, and go up
to where she is, and sit next to the plate of food so she can eat
in safety. If I leave before she's done, one of the freeloading
neighborhood cats will chase her off and eat her food. (they know
when I feed, too! I can usually spot a few pairs of eyes, just waiting
for me to leave so they can move in!)
