277.0. "Moth Balls - Danger to Cats ?" by USCTR1::DIIULIO () Tue May 12 1992 11:47

I have checked thru this conference and haven't found anything
to help me on this topic. If there is a note, please direct me to
it.

I have a neighbor who is trying to keep cats away from their bird
houses which have babies in them now. The bird houses are hung on
a tree which the cats can get at.

They have put moth balls around the base of the tree and have found
that it keeps the cats away. I have been told that some cats will
actually eat moth balls, particularly after the moth balls lose their
smell.

I need quick factual information on this, as I am concerned about
my cats as well as others.

			Thanks,
				Sue ...

Yes, moth balls are dangerous to cats. The bird houses should be
on tall poles in the yard, sufficiently far away from nearby trees so
that cats can't leap onto the houses from the trees and on tall enough
poles so that cats can't reach the bird houses from the ground.

I have added the keyword HAZARDS to this note too. For any of you that
would like to read up on what hazards to cats have been discussed in
this file do a "show key/full hazards" to get a list of notes.

Moth balls are poisonous to humans and animals. Ask your
neighbors to put the moth balls in nylon (old pantyhose
works great!) bags to keep the MB from being eatable....

A can of pepper (red or black) sprinkled on the ground instead of
mothballs would be just as effective (and non-toxic). (Of course, the
ground would have to be re-peppered after rain.
