274.0. "Do Cats Snore?" by SPEZKO::RAWDEN (Cheryl Graeme Rawden) Fri May 08 1992 19:14

Just checked the directory as well as keywords but couldn't find
anything.... Is it normal for cats to snore? My reason for asking is
that Chubs is currently snoring up a storm and this is the first time
I've ever witnessed this behavior in an animal. Next thing you know,
he'll be sleep walking and raiding the refrigerator at 3AM!

Both Loki (the asthmatic) and Midnight (with deformed sinuses)
snore. Bigfoot does not. Add an asthmatic snoring husband, and it's
gets really fun trying to get to sleep at night ;^) !!

Herbie and Nikki both snore. It can be quite annoying when they're
    sharing the bed with you!

Both of my cats snore. They're NOTHING compared to my cousin's
dachshund, though! - you wouldn't think such a small dog could make
    such a big noise! ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

My 15 year old Korat, Honey, snores! This is funny because I just noticed
it this weekend! I heard this funny noise coming from the chair in the
living room. all three "old ladies" were curled up together on the chair.
I got closer and realized that it was the oldest one, Honey, who was snoring
away!

Watson has snored since he was a kitten (he's 6 this year) while Sherlock never snores.
I had the vet check him out when I first noticed it and was told he was perfectly
healthy, the wheezing sound and snoring were due to the shape of his sinuses.
I have observed that the snoring and wheezing seems to be a lot louder in the
spring...figure he must have a few allergies!

My cat Daisy snored but that was because she
had asthema (sp) and it was worse during pollen seasons.

    Black Beauty snores LOUDLY......

He either is Asthymatic or had his nose broken is his younger years. I
tend towards the second due to the shape of his nose and the scars he
    carries.

Funny you should ask... I've awakened in the middle of the night and
hit my husband telling him to stop snoring. He has done the same to me
on occasion (even though I *don't* snore).. turns out that Barney must
have some sort of sinus condition and snores real loud. Sometimes the
others will also, but Barney takes the cake!

if it is a sudden change, then it would be wise to discuss it with the vet.
In the case of overweight cats, snoring is not unusual ...same for overweight
humans for that matter - and it can be an indicator for some benign and not
so benign forms of apnea (irregular breathing)...and, as mentioned, it can
also be an indicator for asthma, allergies, and sinus infections. It is
always an indication that the cat has less the perfectly free breathing
passages, and that can put additional stress on the heart if it is cronic
and is not managed.

Smokey snores loudly - I've actually had to wake her up and ask her to
    roll over :-).

I think Smokey does have a touch of allergies too (she gets runny eyes
    every spring and fall).

We had a dog once name Zelda, who snored louder than any human I've
ever heard. We had to make her leave the room if she wanted to sleep
    while we were watching TV....

274.12Snore? Mine do!NETWKS::GASKELLTue May 12 1992 11:247
Do cats snore? Yes! Yes! Yes!

I've had 30 plus years of snoring cats. And, as mine are mostly healthy
and they don't seem to suffer any long term problems, I think it's
    probably normal.

Munchkin has always snored. When Mutu was alive, she used to poke him
to wake him up, just like I do the occasional time my husband snores!
Loved that cat - she had such class and didn't take any sh*t from
    anyone, especially her daughters!!

Pippin snores - loud - there's been times when I thought it was
Richard. But it's so cute when she kind of makes these little wimper
sounds in between and covers her face with one of her paws.

    such a heartbreaker
