247.0. "Afraid of the daylight?" by CHEFS::NICKOLLSM () Mon Apr 06 1992 06:17

    Hello,

I live in Reading, Berkshire, U.K. and have 2 18 month old cats
one is a black and white puss called Mouse (short for Dangermouse)
and the other is a tabby called Pen (short for Penfold). The names
Dangermouse and Penfold come from cartoon characters here in the
    U.K.

Well that'a the intro over with, this note is about mouse who is a
very strange cat, for some reason she hates going outdoors in the
daylight, but at night time when it's very dark she'd be out for
hours and be quite content, but when you let her out during the
day she will just hang round the porch crying/shivering and heart
beating like mad. Her sister pen is quite happy going out both day
and night and enjoys herself alot more than mouse.

We've only had the pair for 4 months and they are quite happy in
our home. They both stay in during the day while we are out at
work as we don't have a cat flap as yet, but I'm worried mouse
will never be able to stay out during the day!

Does anybody have a cat with a similar problem or can anyone
explain why she is like that.

    Regards,
    Marina.

Many cats just love the nightime and the darkness. Also during
the day there is alot more commotion (cars, kids, sirens) that
might make Mouse a bit more afraid. Do you know the history on
Mouse...could he have been an abused kitty????

My little guy Dewey loves it outside during the day...but once he
hears a siren, kids, a car horn.....he runs in the house for cover.

Have you had Mouse checked by a vet? Maybe some
sensitivity to light? Maybe not but just trying
to get a list of options out here. Some people
are sensitive to light. Maybe even an allergy
to sunlight. Allergic reactions can be physical
    	and psychological as well.

I believe photophobia is also a symptom of glaucoma.

Try some of thoes specially designed kitty sun glasses. They
come in a variety of colours to match your cats.

Hey, I've been looking for those glasses!! Little blind Beth is a tortie,
and I think she'd look lovely in some nice designer shades...

I'm sorry, I guess I'm getting tappy, but I'm sitting here with tears
in my eyes from laughing at the image of a little furface waving her
head back and forth like Stevie Wonder!

I really needed that right now! Thanks Mary!

Jesse says that colors to match cats sounds great, but he doesn't
think that they have them in tabby. And he thinks that they would slide
off his nose every time he tips his head down because of his folded
ear, that side just wouldn't stay up. And he dosen't want one of those
elastic thingies 'round his neck 'cause when he took them off and let
them hang they'd get in his food. He has decided to shop for shaded
    contacts instead.

    Kirk -
Tell Jesse that there are special types for Scottish Folds since
they'd have the same problem. He'll just have to get one of those.

Re: Stevie Wonder......the funny thing is that's exactly what Beth does!
In fact, my vet jokingly said once "Oh, there she goes--doing her Stevie
Wonder!". She really relies on her hearing, even more than smell, so she
is always swishing her head around to get oriented.

If I start hearing her say "Uh huh!", I'll really worry!

Good thing they make glasses in tortie colors!

Mary, who's little kitten ALWAYS makes her laugh!
247.10Uh HUH! I Love it!STUDIO::COLAIANNIWed Apr 08 1992 08:5417
    Mary,

I KNEW it! I was also thinking about the Uh Huh! I'm sitting here
laughing like a fool, and my boss is looking over at me like he's not
sure it was a good idea to give this crazy person a job in his group!
    He's real nice though!

Don't forget to get wrap around glasses AND square shaped ones, so
Beth can impersonate either one she feels like! ;-) I just love the
image of her turning her head to get her bearings! Does she look up
while she does it? Maybe I shouldn't know. My boss thinks I'm nuts
already from laughing in my office all by myself!

Hugs to Beth and your other furfaces!

     Love,
     Y

Those who know Beth insist that she can see right thru her eyelids! She
does "look" right at you! When she's doing her Stevie, she does seem to
be looking at things, her head is up and it's bobbing from side to side and
up and down. She really gets into it!

Last night, I was showing my date how Beth can fetch her mousies but on the
first attempt, I threw the mousie in not-the-usual place and Beth walked
around, doing her Stevie, bumping into furniture. Boy, was my date impressed...
But on the second attempt, I threw the mousie in the proper direction and
she ran after it and jumped right on it. She then brought it back to me,
dropped it in my hand and waited for me to toss it again...this went on for
a couple minutes. We swear she can see them mousies....

I tried my Oakleys on her, but they slid off her face...

Hey, am I the only one that thinks Beth is more like Ray Charles? Next
thing you know, Beth is going to be doing soft drink commercials. :^)

I still remember Beth sitting next to (or was it on) the video camera
case, "looking" right at Leigh, like, "You're not thru with this yet,
    are you? I'm being cute!"

Well, she is too cute for her own good! I'm met alot of great cats in my
day, but this little one is something special. Maybe it's all she's been
through, but the whole world is her playground and she's just delighted to
be here....

Now if she'd STOP putting them mousies in the water bowl....

247.16Too much smell?STUDIO::COLAIANNIWed Apr 08 1992 12:416
    Mary,

Maybe those mousies smell a little TOO strong, and she decided to give
    them a bath?

Well, oddly enough, she's gotta be standing on it to know it's there! She'll
be inches away and she'll be sniffing all over trying to find it! And I
thought she had this keen sense of smell...dumb bunny!! She does much better
when she can hear it hit something or bounce off something. It's a scream
watching her though!

    Mary,

I bet people's first reaction is to feel so bad for little Beth...but
from all your stories it sounds like she is in total control.,.,and
she has learned quickly how to get everyone wrapped around her little
paw!! Smart little girl...I sure want to meet her someday!!

In lieu of sunglasses, you guys could get some of those little hat
things for cats that I saw at the Revelers cat show. They were
baseball capish in style and had elastic that was sewn so it fit
around the ears and behind the head. You could even get matching
bandanas for the neck to go with them.

Re: feeling sorry for Beth...Well, that only last for the first minute after
you meet her. After that, you realize that she's the happiest little kitten
on the planet. She loves everyone and is very well adjusted. All my others
run and hide when people come into the house, but not Beth! She goes right
up to the person, gives them a good sniff, then expects to be held and
have mousies tossed to her!

Re: Glasses and hats...Beth informed me last night that if I continue to
persue this tract, THE FIRM will press charges of kitten abuse against me.
Gee, and I thought she looked cute in those silly kiddy shades I bought!

If I can get her to hold still for a second, I try to take a picture...

It could be an eye infection, I have just taken one of my cats to the
vets because of a weeping eye, and aversion to sunlight.

He has conjunctavitus, apparently its going around all the local
schools in Reading at the moment, and its highly contagious.
60% change of going to the other eye/ the other cat/me......

The vet said that aversion to light is one of the symptoms
