83.3 | Formal names? | AUKLET::MEIER | Hey, furball, who pays the mortgage here? | Mon Dec 16 1991 08:54 | 14 |
| This is a little off the intended purpose of this note, but since I was going to
call my basenote "The Naming of Cats" (from the show Cats :-)), here goes:
Could someone please explain the formal naming of cats; that is, how are cattery
names (and other elements?) used in the name of the cat?
Also, how is the alphabetic naming (e.g. "the names must start with "M"..)
used? Is it across a club, a breed, a cattery (ie personal choice)? When
does it restart? Yearly? After 26 years?
And no, I'm not going to become a breeder :-) I just am getting more curious
and interested as I read more.

83.4 | cattery names and their use | MUTTON::BROWN | | Mon Dec 16 1991 09:27 | 36 |
| If you register a cattery name with an association, then you can use
that name as a prefix on any litters that you bred, or as a suffix on
any cat that you own and register in your name. Generally, the first
word in a registered purebred's name is his breeder's cattery, for
example, in the name Mysinhs Our Obsession of Kattah, Mysinhs means
that I bred the cat, the cat's actual name is Our Obsession (Obi for
short), and the suffix Of Kattah, means that Patsy Lanman is owner (in
this case, we co-own him but she gets to put her cattery suffix on
him). If Kattah wasn't a registered CFA cattery, she couldn't add it
to the end of his name. Then he would just be Mysinhs Our Obsession.
The alphabetic naming of Birmans was started by the breed club many
years ago, and we use every letter of the alphabet. 1992 will be the P
year, and so on. Right now we are in the O year. This is a French
tradition, so mostly it only occurs in breeds that originated in France
or who have a heavy French influence. Other than Birmans, I know that
Chartreux also to alphabetical naming but they don't use all the
letters of the alphabet, they drop the tough ones, like Q,X,Y and Z.
I believe that Birmans have been doing this since they were recognized
in CFA, but I am not sure. No one is forced to do this, but almost
everyone does it. I even have my pet people name their pet kittens
with the right letter. :')
Registering a cattery name costs $50 in CFA.
In dogs, the breeders name their first litter with an A, their second
with a B, third with a C, etc. Also, AKC won't let you register your
kennel name until you have bred X number of litters. They will,
however, let your puppy buyer's put your kennel name first on the
papers if they want, even if your kennel isn't registered. Weird. ;')
(I have a registered dog too! Pinnacle's Annabelle Leigh -- her
breeder's kennel name isn't registered, but having me use the kennel
name on my papers helps the breeder get her kennel registered.)

| A friend of mine is an Abysinian breeder. She's been on a "fly" kick,
so to speak. She's been naming a series of cats with the word "fly" in
it.
Well, her "fruitfly" is going to have kittens soon and she'd like to
come up with some fly names. I told her I'd check in here.
She's already got the following:
Dragonfly
tse-tse fly
Barfly
buttonfly
Anyone got any other ideas??
Thanks.

83.32 | Help! Babies need names! | MIMS::RIVERA_S | | Tue Oct 13 1992 16:56 | 42 |
| Help! My two new babies have been at my house for 10 days, and I still
haven't named them!
I haven't written here before, but used to read a lot before my Smokey
died two years ago. Since then I've been too sad to read - everything
reminded me of him too much.
But I survived! And have two beautiful babies to fill my heart again.
But I'm tired of calling them Sister and Brother.
They're sort-of Maine-Coonish (father was a Coon, mother was just a
cat), long haired gray/black tabby colored. They look exactly alike
except he's larger than her, and her face is a little shorter.
Their personalities are so different, though! She's the little boss,
very aggressive and curious, full of life, attacking everything (my
arms have back-claw scratches from her bath - front-claw scratches
from everything else).
He's sort of shy, more a mama's boy. Purrs constantly (she purrs
occasionally), loves to be held, and is slower to attack things.
He waits on her a lot, and if she thinks it's ok to kill, he'll
kill it, too.
They're both large for their age (like a Coon), and very well-
behaved (well, for kittens anyhow. ha ha).
The only names I can think of that suit their personalities are
Lucy and Linus from Charlie Brown. I'm just not sure I like the
names, though. She could be a Lucy, but he just doesn't look like
a Linus.
They're 9 weeks old, very healthy, and for those of you that are
concerned about these things, they will be spayed and neutered, and
will be house-only cats unless on a leash with Mom (me).
I would like names that go together, but they don't have to be "real"
names, if you know what I mean.
Any help I can get would be appreciated - my brain is tired!

OK gang, put your thinking caps on. A former Feliner, Cin Gerry as a
matter of fact, needs help with a couple of names:
1) Tortie Exotic SH
Mother: Cattyshack's Who Nose? (cuz she has a nose and shouldn't)
Father: Jenita's Bar None (as in the candy bar) of Cattyshack
The name can either me candy bar related or "nose" question (like
mum). Cin is really excited about her and I cannot wait to see
this little girl at Seacoast.
2) Black & White Exotic SH female
She needs a "Girl" or "Woman" name. Her mum's name is Silly Girl,
two sisters from other breedings are Funny Woman and Pretty Woman.
Cin loves "American Woman" but she is saving that. This girl is
special in that odds were totally against her to be a SH. Her mum
is a LH Exotic and has produced only one SH (5 or 6 litters).

Cattyshack's Material Girl

Quite Unrehearsed
Quiet Riot (okay so it's a band, give me a break already!) ;')
Quarterflash (")
Queensryche (")
Que Sera Sera
I have a very nice baby that needs a name. I usually name my kitten's
after songs or bands, and I have to stick with the Q until 1994. The
father's name is Pleasantview Orestes of Mysinhs. The mother's name is
Zauklapaw's Laci of Mysinhs. I thought of naming this baby Mysinhs
Queen Anne's Lace, but she is too spunky (that seems like a sweet name
for a sweet cat), and it isn't a song. I am leaning towards Quiet
Riot, but Ken doesn't like that.
I have another litter of two, a seal girl and a blue boy, and they need
Q names too. Their father's name is Windflower Nepenthe of Myinhs, and
the Mom's name is Mysinhs Night Dreams. Any suggestions??

83.75 | Want to think of a name? | ISLNDS::FALLON | | Wed Jun 09 1993 10:52 | 23 |
| I am thinking about different names for one of my kittens. It might be
fun for us to try to think of something!
A little about the kitty first:
she is a Chocolate Lynx Point Siamese/Colorpoint. Her body is
completely white and at this time has faint chocolate lynx markings on
her head, legs and tail. Her eyes are her biggest feature, they are a
deep indigo blue and are a very unusual but standard shape. She is
very different, like she could stare you down and must be smarter than
me! She also has quite the temper!!! I have to laugh, she doesn't
actually hurt you, but has batted me in the face once or twice. Her
coat is purrfectly short and suede like and all her little muscles show
right through. Very tall on her legs and ears set on the side of her
head that could catch radar!
Now, we had started out calling her chocomate girl and have now
progressed to Moonsta's Chocomundo. I am not sure this is quite the
right name for such a pretty thing to be shown under. Altho, I have
seen some pretty bizzare ones. So, any ideas?
Karen
Oh, the name would have to start out with "Moonsta" blahblahblah.
I had even thought of Moonsta's Modus Vivendi

gotten the papers back from CFA so I don't know if they accepted it or
not. My husband was worried that since she isn't silver they would
have a problem with it, but Quicksilver isn't the name of a color (CFA

Sure there is a purrfect name for her! There's a famous Hungarian
arti-folk song about 'only if her eyes're blue is she beautiful' or the
like. The name should be
Azaszp Akineka Szemekk
(Can shorten it or chhose one only, e.g. Akineka sounds Japanese, that
*can* match a Siamese as Far East, too...)
BTW, I took up telepathic contacts to the cat. She told me her name is

telepathic actually like 'tzeelee' (there is a Hungarian nickname 'Cili'

| Ok, I need your help. My dear little MONDO needs a registered name.
This kitten promises to be a TOP show boy. His nicname (and probably
his call name from now on) is Mondo. Why? Because he was 6 1/2 ounces
when he was born! Right now he's 3 months old and looks like he's at
least 4-5 months.
He's a black and white turkish angora. He's got a black "mask" with a
white blaze between his eyes. Black ears with white tufts inside. A
black body, white feet (black paw pads), and a little white dot on the
end of his tail (yes, it's adorable!).
Anyway, he needs a registered name. His mother's name is Raham's Kyra
of Taliea. His father is Dumas Blue Thunder.
My cattery name is Taliea. We're not sure what type of name to go
with. I was thinking of a mythological theme (Kyra is the name of one
of Zeus's daughters), but that doesn't have to be. We were also trying
to think of something to go with "Mondo", but haven't found anything
else we like.
He needs a distinguished name. Doesn't have to go with any type of
theme at all. Anyone have any ideas?

| Holly,
Have you seen the show "CATS"? One of the cats was Busterfer Jones.
He was a large black and white cat. The first line of the song is
"Busterfer Jones was not skin and bones, in fact he is amazingly fat."
He is described as having white spats and dining in the finest
restaurants, etc. He's an elegant man about town. I'll have to listen
to my tape again to get more of the words and also check the correct
spelling for Busterfer.

As an aside, I've always been mildly amused at the notion of naming
my cats; I'm an over-all animal type, and have two dogs as well as
one cat. The dogs know their names and come when called; but I've
always harbored this sinking feeling that the cat (a) doesn't know
what her name is, (b) doesn't care what her name is, (c) couldn't
be bothered coming when called even if (a) and (b) were false, or
(d) all of the above.
Enjoy,

Elizabeth - aka Liz or Lizzie
Olivia - aka "Woobie"
Florence - aka "tubby" (she weighs 21 lbs.!)
Maddie - aka Veruka (littermate to Florence - she weighs 16 lbs.)
Bambi - aka "gurrfriend"
For me kitties just seem to grow into a name (or names). Hope this

Our Chunky (R.I.P.) got named that because of his massive (Maine Coon)
constitution. He definitely knew his name - if you said his name he
would flick his great bushy tail; if you said anything else he'd ignore
you. Also, my own kittens seem to be learning their names; Rocky looks
up when you say his name, but he ignores calls to Robin or Blueberry.
Blueberry is starting to respond to her name, but Robin, independent
little thinker that she is, can't be bothered by such mundane
considerations as what we want to call her. She's always at hand
(quite literally) anyway.

| Jasmine is a beautiful name. Josephine, Jade, Jessica, Jewel,Juno who
was the cihief goddess of the Roman pantheon sister and wife of
Jupiter, June is the consecrated to the goddess Juno.
Try looking up famous woman who have the initial "J",or greek or roman
mythology. Shakespeare happens to have many a name that I have used
for my cats.
Oh just thought of another Jillian, or better yet get a baby book
that has the meaning of the names and find a name through that.
Good luck and congratulations on your adoption.

end workstation. I had the (mis)fortune to work with these
beasts as part of the PHIGS and GKS teams. DEC sold about 50 of them
and had to take back or replace many of them when they got desupported.
An ill omened name for a perfectly good cat :-).
Lynxes were common throughout europe, so names OUGHT to exist
in most of the european languages (german, french, russian etc.)
for that animal. Hopefully we didn't all steal it from the same
latin root or something like that...

The lynxes did not fail, just grown old... and the Big Lynx was a hit.
I would not hesitate to name my cat after this name. As far as I know,
the Germans and the Italians also call their lynxes also lynx. We in Hungary
call them "HIZ" (with one long accent on the u of the hiuz),
pronounced approximatively 'HEE-youws' or 'he-ews'. If you call me on
DTN 798-5526, I can say it for you :)

| Okay, I'm trying to change Joey's name. His full name is currently
"Joey Bishop" (his original children named him Joey). I want to
keep the "Joey" part but I want to come up with something better
that Bishop. How many other famous, semi-famous or infamous Joeys
can you guys come up with.
All suggestions will be considered. Two I've already thought of are
Joey Lawrence (from Blossom) and Jo Jo Starbuck (I do call him Jo Jo
a lot). I'm not that fond of either of those though.
He's a brown tabby with white and he has green eyes. He's got a
rather quizzical (is that a word) expression on his face that makes
him look as if life is a total question mark to him. He's also got
extra long feline fangs which remind me of a vampire (in fact I thought
seriously of calling him Armand after one of Anne Rice's vampires...
but, 1) Armand doesn't have a last name and I like my cats to have
full names :^) and 2) I'd have to change his first name and possibly
confuse him.
Oh rats, another great name just came to me and I can't use it for
Joey. It's..."Nick Danger" (those of you familiar with Firesign
Theater will recognize that one). Guess I'll save that for some
kitty who likes to live dangerously. Hmmm, maybe I should have named
Mac that.
Okay, ready...set...go...let's hear those names. :^)

It's beginning to look that way. <sigh>
Lessee, I'm looking at that sweet Joey face right now and thinking
he's just too sweet to be a Buttafuco. Joe Cool, Joe DiMaggio and
Joe Montana are a little closer to his personality and look. He's
not a big brawney cat, he's more petite (quarterback vs. a lineman).
Right now he's stretched out on the 4ft x 4ft purple corduroy pillow
(stuffed with 12 lbs of shredded foam) that an old boyfriend made for
me back in the 70's. He's got his front paws stretched out as far as
they'll go in front of him and he's sunk down into the pillow in a
little Joey-sized indentation. He's got the cutest little "this pillow
is mine, all mine" look on his face as he looks up at me from the pillow.
Keep those names a comin'.

Yep...sounds like you've got him pegged. This is the same cat

| We just adopted a 9 month old female kitten to keep our almost-1-year
old Sassafras company.
She is jet black with bright yellow eyes, a long tail, and the wedge
shaped face and wide set ears of a siamese, but is some sort of
domestic short hair, probably a Heinz 57 variety. She has a tiny voice
that often sounds like a squeaky toy.
We were thinking of a name that indicates black, but haven't come up
with one we like. Ebony is already taken. Something that indicates
squeaky might be O.K., too. She was named Sheba by her foster care
family, but I'm not too hot on that one either.
Any ideas?

Onyx's brothers name is Bagheera (sp?) after the Panther in the Jungle
Book. I've alwasy liked that name. His sister's name was Shadow. All
of them are jet black with gold eyes.
Right now I'm semi-fostering an outdoor kitty at my old apartment
complex. She tends to sound more like she's squeaking than meowing
so I just call her "Squeak" kitty (which sometimes becomes Squeaker

Hope you find a name you like. In my experience, they cats tend to
name themselves in a short amount of time. You'll see, something

fostering her, she had had some sort of respiratory infection. She is
sneezing again. I'm going to ask the vet if her squeaky voice is
permanent. If so, I'm leaning towards calling her Squeaky Toy, since
that's what her meows reminds me of. If it's temporary, it would be
rather stupid to call her that, in which case I'm leaning towards
Shadow or perhaps an Italian word that describes her.
