    I have a request.  There is an organization called FUTURE PROMISE
    that is concerned with preserving the wild species of felines
    such as Cloud Leopards, Servals etc.  They do wonderful work.
    Many of you have seen their booth at the cat shows  
    
    They are having a tough financial time right now as are all such
    organizations.  I'd really love to see a Silver Lining Donation
    made to these folks.

    Would you please include "Whitefoot" on your next memorial.  This is 
    a cat that belonged to a close friend of mine.  She was a lovely black 
    and white tuxedo-style cat.  Just the sweetest thing.  She would greet 
    me at the driveway when I would come to visit and would rub all over my 
    legs and purr like crazy.  She also had special permission to keep my 
    car hood warm while I was visiting her family.
    
    She was an older kitty that had provided many years of kitty-love to 
    her family.  She died of kidney failure a month or so ago and due to 
    busy schedules on both sides I just found out about her death.  I will 
    miss her very much.

    Tigger died Thanksgiving weekend, of what appeared to be "natural
    causes".

    By coincidence, Pat Murphy's landlady just lost a cat named Tigger
    also, however this one was hit by a car.  Where is your friend's
    Tigger located.  I'll list one as Tigger of New Hampshire and the 
    other as Tigger of whatever.

    She was hit by a car on Thursday 1/9 and did not survive.
    
    She is survived by her momma kitty, Paddy Paws and her brothers, Bagheera 
    and Onyx.
    
    She was a sweet, shy, little 7 month old kitty and she will be missed
    by all who knew her.

        Please add Bo Watson to the list of kitties.  I had to have him
    put down last night because of kidney failure and old age (17). 

        I introduced all of my babies in the old notesfile, someday I'll
    write more here.
    
        You may remember that I adopted him and his sister Bim last April, 
    with the help of Pricilla.  Bim is doing well with her adopted brother
    and sisters Nikki and Girl.      Rest in peace Bo.

A friend and noter just suffered a loss...Nancy Mack's beautiful young cat
Whiskers ("Whiskey" to his friends) died today, hit by a car.  He was
about a year old. 

Whiskers was a cat of unique spirit and style...I'll remember how he'd run 
by their family dog with his tail in the air...zzzzoooom!  Right beneath 
the dog's nose!  Start the chase!

He was a particularly lovely orange cat, with a tail that formed the shape 
of a a "7".  I haven't met many, or any, like him.  Unique.  I will miss 
him.

I'll bet Nancy could use some sympathy and condolences...she has mine.

I am mostly a read only noter.  Could you please add Diva to the Silver
Lining Memorial, she is our 17 year kitty who will be put to sleep tonight
due to cancer of the bladder.  She was adopted form the Kitty Haven shelter
when we lived in Mass.  We will really miss her.

    Last week, my husband, Peter, and I euthanized Kali Mutu.  I wasn't
    going to enter a note, because I know how all of you feel and the
    wonderful support you give when this happens, but decided I would to
    let all of you know that she's gone.  I have had long conversations
    with both Joanne Cordes-Brown and Nancy Diettrich-Cunniff, and can't
    tell them enough how much their support helped me!  Both Peter and I are 
    fine, and we're very proud of ourselves that we didn't let her suffer.  
    She died with dignity.
    
    Mutu was a very old lady - 19 1/2, and in very good health, outside of
    mild arthritis.  We knew she had the beginnings of kidney disease a
    couple of years ago, but she seemed to be fine.  She had a full-blown,
    grand-mal epileptic seizure a couple of Sundays ago, and that scared me
    to death!  I immediately brought her to the vet, and blood was taken to
    run a kidney profile.  When the results came back, and the values were
    very high, Peter and I had a long discussion with the vet about what to
    expect, and we decided to euthanize her as soon as possible.  Mutu
    became very frail, very quickly, was very disoriented - bumping into
    walls, etc., and was very gallant up to the end.  She was still walking
    around, still drinking, still peeing (although not in the box but in
    the room).  However, it broke our hearts watching this wonderful lady
    deteriorate.  
    
    Our vet, Terri Nord from Framingham Animal Hospital, is a very unique 
    person. Many years ago, I had talked with her about what we would do when, 
    and if, the time came to euthanize.  She told me that I shouldn't worry
    about stressing either Mutu or Munchkin because she would come to the
    house.  So, last Wednesday, I stayed home with Mutu, who purred the
    whole morning; people came to visit her, and she and I had some very
    valuable time together.  She died very quickly.  I can't imagine
    anything nicer than dying at home, in the place you're most secure,
    surrounded by the people who love you, hearing their voices and feeling
    their hands and love around you!  I wish humans were allowed to die
    that way, don't you?
    
    Please don't be too sad for us because she had a wonderful life and was 
    very loved.  I try to remember that we are only allowed a certain amount of
    time with all loved ones. 
    
    Kali Mutu was a beautiful half-bluepoint/half-sealpoint Siamese, with a
    wonderful vocabulary!  She and Munchkin had lovely kittens, but she was
    a terrible mother.  We used to say that she "had them; fed them, and
    forgot them".
    
    Munchkin, who is also 19 1/2, and has all the chronic problems -
    diabetes, arthritis, and kidney disease - seems to be doing fine.  I
    don't think he notices (or cares) that she isn't around because for the 
    last few years they haven't spent a lot of time together.  Besides, he was
    always so jealous of her.  Now, Peter and I can monitor him more
    closely, and hope he continues to be the "tough guy".  Terri stopped to
    see him before she left the house, and after he said "meow" (because he
    knows her), he gave her a look, as if to say, "Oh no!  My worst
    nightmare - SHE's in my house!".  It was so funny!
    
    Hug all your kitties for me!  I told Mutu that when she saw Shadow (her
    daughter) in kitty-heaven, she could spit at her (on general
    principles, as usual) and everything would be back to normal!  I also
    told her to look up all the kitties who belonged to us "feliners", and
    give them purrs & licks from their owners.
    
    So, purrs & licks from Mutu and me...  

    I'm very sorry about Kali Mutu.  How fortunately that she had so many
    years with you, and such a peaceful death.

    Tiger is a co-workers cat who passed away last Saturday in the wee
    hours of the morning.  He had been at Tufts for an operation on a
    collapsed lung.  He survived the surgery well, but he just couldn't
    hang in there.  He leaves behind his brother Barney, who misses him
    very much.

    Thanks to everyone who responded!  Peter, Munch and I seem to be doing
    fairly well; however, I have had my moments.  Strange how you can
    convince yourself that the cat is just hiding, and then at the oddest
    times, you realize that s/he's gone.
    
    We think Munch is realizing that Mutu's gone.  It's two weeks today,
    but we always said that Munch was "brain-dead"!  He had his check-up 
    last week, and his kidney values seem to be better - don't ask me how 
    that happened, but it's wonderful news.  I hope it continues for a lot 
    longer.

    very close friend of mine had a cat that she got as a stray many years
    ago, and they figured out that he was at least 17 years old, but
    probably older. They had to make the horrible decision to put him to
    rest yesterday morning. He had gone from over 20 pounds to 9 pounds in
    the last year. The vet said things just finally wore out in the old
    guy. He was an extremely nice kitty, and I will miss him a great deal
    myself.
    
     So, if you could add Keezer to the list I would appreciate it, and so

          She died a tragic death that at this point is too painful for me
          to discuss.  She was a sweet cat and did not deserve what happen.

     Can you please add the name Sheeba to the list? Sheeba was my
    girlfriend's Oriental Shorthair kitty, and was a very dear kitty friend
    of mine also. She succumbed to a maliganant tumor. She will be missed 
    terribly. Her little companion Cleo misses her big buddy too.
      
     I'll be sending along a donation to Nancy DC for the fund in Sheeba's 
    memory. She's up there with her best friend Mr. Lyle now.

    Well, last Tuesday, Peter and I made the other tough decision, and
    euthanized Munchkin.  Although we are terribly sad, we are also very
    happy and grateful for the wonderful almost 20 years we had with him.
    
    He developed an abscessed tooth, and spent Tuesday at the vet's 
    (Dr. Terri Nord, who is almost family).  Peter and I spent the
    day in Boston, seeing the Tall Ships (had a wonderful day).  We
    arrived at Framingham Animal Hospital around 5 p.m., and Terri told us
    about the day she had with Munch.  Because she knew she couldn't reach
    us by phone, she tried to take care of him the way we would have
    wanted.  About an hour after I left him, he had a full-blown seizure, 
    just like Mutu's.  Terri took blood and his sugar level was 25 (which 
    should have killed him--normal is 100-120).  She was able to put in an IV 
    and ran some dextrose-water into him, and, like always, he perked right up.
    He was such a tough old man!  She extracted the tooth and
    cleaned out the abscess, but couldn't get the wound to clot.  The rest of 
    the blood work came back, and she discovered that he was so anemic that 
    his hematocrit (level of red blood cells) almost didn't register.  
    He was given him some whole blood, and the wound was packed a couple of 
    times.  Terri wanted to keep him overnight, to be sure that the wound 
    stopped bleeding.
    
    Peter and I couldn't leave Munch overnight.  First, he doesn't eat, and
    being diabetic he must eat, but more importantly, the stress of being
    away from us - Munch didn't care where he was as long as he had us -
    would have been too much. He was in end-stage renal disease and so
    anemic. It would be very unfair to try and keep him going - for whatever 
    amount of time - for our sake, not Munch's.  I would have been so afraid 
    to leave him at home, for fear that he would die alone and in pain.  I 
    knew when I reached this point, that we had no choice but to put him to 
    sleep. Like Mutu, the last things he felt were our hands petting him, and 
    the last thing he heard was me whispering in his ear that I loved him.
    
    Needless to say, the last couple of nights have been very tough.  Peter
    has woken me up each night because I've been crying in my sleep.  I
    know this will get better, and I haven't one doubt that we did the
    right, and only, thing, but it doesn't keep us from missing him and
    Mutu so much.
    
    For those of you who have kitties with kidney disease, please know that
    one of the complications is anemia.  Usually a cat (or human) will
    compensate, like Munch, so you may not see any symptoms.  I know the
    last few months, Munch was sleeping most of the time, but at his
    advanced age, I didn't think much about it.  Because he spent most of
    his time in the bedroom and not with us, I think he gave us time to
    learn to be without him. 
    
    Both Munchkin and Kali Mutu were born in 1972, and both died in 1992 at
    almost 20 years old!  They were wonderful cats, and Munch was the
    "light of my life" and I was his human.  They will never be replaced,
    but I know we will find others whom we'll love almost as much.
    After Labor Day, I think we'll start searching for little ones.  I am
    very interested in the Balinese breed, and hope I can find a breeder
    who has classics (modified wedge-head, like Mutu).  If I'm unsuccessful
    with Balinese, then we probably will get Tonkinese.
    
    I wish all of your kitties long lives.  People who love animals are
    very special.  I wish we treated each other as well as animal-lovers
    treat their pets.
    
    Rest in peace Munchkin and Kali Mutu...

    What a wonderful life Munch must have had owning two humans like you
    and your husband.
    
    He's gone on to a beautiful place and he's with Mutu once again.  
    
    You gave him the greatest gift of all when out of love you took away
    the pain.
    
    Our deepest sympathy is with you.

    I'm so sorry to hear about Munchkin. I have enjoyed your reading your 
    notes about him and felt like I almost knew him. It must be very hard 
    for you right now. At least you know he got the very best care and 
    everything that could be done for him was done at the end. He had a 
    wonderful life with you!

    Thank you for adding the information about anemia in cats with 
    kidney disease. Misty, my 18 year old Siamese, has kidney failure. 
    She seems to be sleeping more than usual lately and her appetite is 
    down a little. They are subtle changes, but I think I'll take her in 
    for a checkup.

    Hi Joan,
    
         I am so sorry to hear about Munchkin.  I feel that we have shared
    something, with Munchkin and Loki being diabetic.
    
         Loki, like Munchkin, does not eat at the vet, and this means that
    if he needs to stay overnight for anything he must stay at Tufts, with
    the 24-hr intensive care.  Doing that does real wonders for the
    diabetic's system, and it would have done terrible things to Munch's
    system too.  You did the right thing by releasing Munch from pain and
    I think you were so unselfish to do this for him.  It's so tempting to
    just keep a beloved pet going, for the sake of the human.  I think you
    gave Munchkin a wonderful last gift ...

    Thank you for your caring thoughts, but knowing how all of us are
    softies when it comes to our fur-faces I'm not surprised.  I, too, feel
    as though I know you and your kitties because we've shared so much
    through this notesfile.
    
    Slowly, things are getting better, although it's still very wierd (and
    sad) to come home and not find either of them there.  It took about a
    month for me to stop looking for Mutu when I came into the house. Since
    Munch slept with us, going to bed is very hard!  My sleep pattern has
    to be readjusted because he woke me up once or twice during the night -
    either telling me that he was in the pan, or getting a drink (and
    walking across me) or just cuddling and rubbing his face over mine. 
    It will take a few more nights to get used to sleeping through until
    morning. 
    
    Thank you again for your concern and love.  It helps a lot.  One day, I
    will be introducing new babies to all of you...
    
    

    Tears came to my eyes as I read about Munchie.  I know it was a hard
    decision for you to make, but take comfort in the fact that Munchkin is
    now resting peacefully with Kali Mutu, and he is no longer in pain.

    So sorry of hear of your loss.  20 years is such an achievement - such
    a wonderfu life to have spent with people who love and care.  It's
    always difficult to say good by to a best friend no matter how long
    you've had them.  When I lost Ting I found it almost impossible to
    sleep for 2 weeks - he always slept in the crook of my arm.  Take
    comfort in their memories and know that both of these special kitties
    are in a beautiful place free of hurt with fields to run thru - sunny
    places to sleep and lots of mice and butterflies to chase.

    My little Wumpkin is out there somewhere in the universe tonight, not
    here in her old house.  She developed congestive heart failure, and was
    hours away from cardiac arrest, the vet said yesterday; and so we
    decided to send her off peacefully.
    
    Hard.  She was a luminous, sweet, gentle, humorous and patient kitty
    all of her years, and she handled this last ordeal with a tremendous
    amount of grace.
    
    I had to say goodbye to her yesterday after the vet and I talked.  
    I held her, and she was calm and (since the vet had drained the fluid
    from her chest) relatively comfortable.  She purred, and I scratched
    her under her chin (absolutely her favorite spot to get a scratch).
    
    I thanked her for her friendship, her patience, and her gentleness; and
    I asked her forgiveness for making the decision to end her life.
    
    I hope her spirit understood me -- and I'm going to go outside tonight
    after dark and look for a new star in the sky.
    
    Thanks all of you for being there -- reading Tina's recent note about
    Tiga, and everyone's replies, really helped me tonight.

    I was going to ask folks if they wished to continue the SLM
    since I have not been able to keep up with FELINE and since
    on one had been informing me of passings.  However, over
    the last two days my life has been touched by several kitty
    deaths including the traumatic and sudden death of Lancelot,
    a 5 yr old x-feral, who shared his life with close close friends
    of mine.  Lancelot developed severe heart disease and died
    en-route from the Porter Square vet to Angell Memorial Hospital.
    His people are just devastated.  
    
    Angel and I also lost one of her kittens yesterday.  And other 
    friends have had similar losses.  
    
    SO, I WILL be making a donation again this quarter.  Send contributions

    Nancy, I thought I saw a volunteer message for the SLM from someone
    within the past few days, but I can't find it.  If this was my
    imagination, I'll fill in with the SLM for as long as I'm at DEC.
    You have my home phone, so you can fill me in on what to do if the
    other person doesn't show up today.  And if I go down the tubes
    suddenly, I have several people's phone numbers so I ask one of them to
    put a request in Feline for another volunteer.

    Pleaseeeee :-)  a cry from those of us who struggle with our
    checkbooks, cash the checks.  (I think the way the SLM works is the checks
    are made out to you, you cash them, and then you send one check plus a
    DEC Matching Gift form in, right?)  So if you put them in your account
    instead of waiting until the end of the quarter, we can balance our
    checkbooks, and you can even earn interest to pay for the stamp :-)

    I normally don't do this for the shelter kitties...but this one
    was very special to all of us.
    
    Can you please add Louie to the Silver Lining Memorial.  Louie was
    a 10 year old Feluk positive cat that has been living at our Feluk
    house for many many years.   Louie was one of Pat Brody's original 
    cats...and all our hearts are broken that he had to be put to sleep 
    yesterday.  His pain is gone...and he will once again go live with Pat.
    
    After many many years the leukimia took over him and he was going
    down hill fast.   He spent the last two days at Priscilla house in
    a cage with a heating blanket, any food he wanted...and alot of
    special love.    We will miss him dearly.....

    Ok, as promised - the donations for the Silver Lining Memorial Fund.
    In case anyone questions why I wrote "donations " and "contributions",
    it was because there was a check made out directly to IFAW, as well as
    the ones gathered into a check for me.  

    The reason for selecting IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare)
    was due to many reasons, one being that most people that sent money
    said that IFAW was a good cause (and some didn't particularly care one
    way or the other) and another reason being that I have not been able to
    really research agencies, foundations, societies, etc. as fully as I'd
    like.  If you have one particular organization that you'd like to see
    the next contribution sent to, please mail me any details.  I imagine I
    will be breaking up the donations into smaller groups so that more
    places can benefit in this awful economy.

    Our quarterly gifts will be based on the same calendar as DEC's
    quarters since it's easiest.

    Just received a nice note from IFAW - International Fund for Animal

    Also, I have two packages of information regarding IFAW.  One of these
    will be posted on my cube wall.  Those of you local to Nashua now have
    a fine excuse to visit!  
    
    Here's a quote from their Volunteer Guide:

    IFAW has nearly one million supporters in more than seventy countries. 
    It sounds like they do an enormous amount of work with a very small
    staff.  They ask that if you see local newspaper or magazine articles
    with IFAW mentioned, to let them know by sending a clipping.  Or if you
    hear IFAW mentioned on tv, please send a note telling the date, city,

    long time shelter cats at the Champs (formerly Wareham cat)
    Shelter.  He was an all black cat that was abused during the
    Halloween season about 2 years ago.  He died in his sleep Tues

    THE WINN FOUNDATION -- a non-profit foundation that funds studies on 
    health issues that affect cats.  It is staffed with volunteers from
    CFA.  The donation would be targeted for Cardio research. 
    {There has been a lot of talk about Cardio recently in the Felines file
    so the Winn Foundation seemed to be an appropriate candidate.}

    THE STANLEY O. TRAVIS FUND at Tufts New England Veterinary Medical 
    Center -- Injured stray animals as well as sick pets whose owners can't
    afford sophisticated medical procedures will be the beneficiaries of a
    special fund created as a memorial tribute to the late Dr. Stanley O.
    Travis, a former member of the Tufts veterinary staff and owner of the
    Wayland Animal Clinic for many years.

    PET LOSS SUPPORT GROUP -- dedicated to improving the quality of life
    for people and animals.  The Hotline is supported solely by private
    donations and is one of the many projects of the Human-Animal Program.  

It's obvious where I'd like to see this quarter's donation go...  Actually,
I think we've given to Winn Foundation before.

With the Travis Fund at Tufts, I've seen first hand how it works.  They
were kind enough to contribute $100 to Blue's 4-digit vet bills (I think
we're up to $1243...), and it was very much appreciated.  Once I recover
from the shock, I'm going to replace it---and since the Foundation is
not-for-profit, Digital will match it, so next time someone needs help,
the money will be there.

    I think Tufts "Travis" fund is a wonderful thing and a donation to them
    would be a good idea. 
    
    Is there any chance there will be enough money there to donate to a 
    place that studies cardio too?  It doesn't necessarily have to be the 
    Winn Foundation if there is another place.  I'm sure you guys
    understand why I'm anxious for cardio study to get some money.  I 
    don't know what the finances are going to be like just yet.  I'm 
    still recovering from Bailey's care, but, once I figure it out I'll
    try to send something for SLM.  Let us know what the deadline is
    (or did you do that already and I just missed it?).
    
    Perhaps Tufts Pet Loss Support Group (if they need funding) and the 
    Support Group out here could be considered next time around.

    The deadline is the second week in December.  I'd like to send the
    check a bit earlier than end of quarter due to the Christmas season.
    
    Perhaps we can aim most of the funds at going towards the Travis Fund
    and use a smaller proportion to send to another group?  We can give to
    one place, two places, three places, etc... etc. depending on the funds
    in my account.  As of next week, I expect to have a balance of about
    $50.  Even the donation of $1 helps at this point.  :^)
    
    Oh, and I believe Nancy DC had sent money to Winn once before but it
    was several years ago.  I'd have to check my paperwork when I get to

    Since they are being reduced at the beginning on 1993, I am going to be
    sending out the contributions the first week in December...
    
    Minimum contribution will be $25 and DEC will match 50% instead of
    100%.  The text of the message is included below

    As we continue to make changes in our cost structure, we are 
    reviewing long-established programs and adapting them to the 
    changing needs of the company.  Two of the programs are Employee 
    Matching Gifts and United Way.
 
    Both programs have allowed Digital to help those community  
    organizations share in its profits through employee-directed 
    support. However, when profitability is down, this ability to 
    share is limited. As a result, the company's financial commitment 
    must reflect its current business environment.
    
    The company has approved a reduction in the corporation's match to 
    Employee Matching Gifts and United Way programs as follows:
    
       MATCHING GIFT PROGRAM -- EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 1993
    
       	 o the corporate match will be decreased from 
           dollar-for-dollar to $0.50-on-the-dollar.

    Someone sent me a flyer for the cat show in Boxborough this weekend 
    (I wonder why?!) and there's a note on the bottom that states "a
    portion of the proceeds donated to the Winn Foundation for feline
    health and research".  Since many east coast feliners will be going to
    this show (and indirectly giving to Winn), I thought it would be best
    to concentrate on the other two funds mentioned earlier, Travis and Pet
    Loss.  Everyone ok with this? 

    
    	The Tufts Travis Fund for stray and indigent animals is
    	`nearly depleted', according to a flyer at the Foster
    	hospital. This fund is used for people who cannot afford
    	to treat their pets, and strays that are dropped off in
    	need of care. I think we should consider making a donation
    	to them in the near future. I believe the contact person
    	would be Pat Methot at 839-5302 X 4679.

    I'm going to take the liberty of advising anyone who is planning to
    donate to the SLMF to do so quickly, as Cheryl is planning to send the

    The fund is not very large at this time. I know it's a tough time for
    everyone, but if you can send ANY amount, it sure would help a lot of
    our furry friends out here in need. Lots of little amounts can add up
    quickly to a substantial amount.

    the development office (after being transferred 3 times) and she's

    While visiting my vets the other day (Daniel Webster Animal Hospital,
    Bedford, NH), I spoke with Dr. Tucker about the Silver Lining Memorial
    and mentioned that cardio was all too common for "Digital cats".  He
    gave me the name of a Dr. at Cornell that runs the Feline Health Center
    which is a self-supporting system kept alive by private donations.  
    Dr. Tucker said we could mark a contribution to be specifically used
    for cardio research.  This would likely be used for the next quarter
    since we didn't get much in contributions this time around.

        This fund was established to commemorate animals who have been such
        an important part of our lives and who are no longer with us.  The
        Stanley O. Travis Fund has been selected as a recipient of this
        quarter's donation.  We learned about the Travis Fund through our
        coworker Mary Tamir.  She rescued Blue, a beautiful Himalayan who
        had been struck by an automobile.  With the help of Tuft's and Mary,
        Blue was able to survive his ordeal and is now on the road to
        recovery.  

        Enclosed you will find contributions in the amount of $100.00.  This
        gift is being made on behalf of the "Feliners".  We are a group of
        Digital employees who share a deep love of animals, particularly
        cats.  We communicate, worldwide, via an electronic bulletin board
        system open to Digital employees.

    regarding your note on Cornell, it is a very well known and established
    school ofveterinary medicine. I have donated to them on several
    occasions.  It would be fine to give to them, but in my opinion there
    are more places out there that could use the money and appreciate it a
    little more.  I don't mean to say they wouldnl't appreciate it, but our
    donations would be a mere drop in the bucket to them.  A shelter or
    indigent fund on the other hand can feel immediately our gifts. I hope
    you get my drift! I don't want to offend anyone!

    I've received mail from some people who would like to see the next
    quarter's donation (if there is one) to go to cardio study.  If anyone

    Please add Honey to the Silver Lining Memorial for this quarter.  Honey
    was one of the "old ladies" that my mother and I adopted three years
    ago after their owner had passed away.  
    
    My mother came home last night and found Honey "asleep" on the floor of
    the living room.  After going to pet her, she realized that Honey had
    died.  She was 18 years old and the most loving cat I've ever seen.
    
    She will be sadly missed as she was my favorite of the three.

    Add rocky to the list... He was my inlaws cat.  He was only 9months
    old. He was a double-pawed black and white cutie.  His nervous system
    gave out on him and he went blind so they had to put him to sleep.
    No one (not even  specialists) could figure out what happened. One
    theory is from the anasthesia (sp) from his neutering.  It all started
    when he was having trouble using his hind quarters.  It then got
    worse and worse.

    BeeBee  2 1/2 year old tiger cat, he looked like the cat in Alice in
    Wonderland.  He was a wild cat that was adopted by our stray Romeo when
    he was a little baby.  Beeb had not shown up to eat in couple of days,
    so we were very concerned.  Well the plan was when he did show up was
    to catch him and take to the vets to get fixed and have his shots. 
    Well he  did finally show up and was limping very badly, we thought his
    leg was broken.  My Mom caught him in a cat carrier w/ some catnip, and
    off to the vets they went.  Well the vet did look at his leg and said
    it wasn't broken but badly infected from a fight.  The vet then
    suggested that he be tested for feline luk, so we had him tested. 
    Unfortunately the test came back positive, and we had to make a
    decision.  There was noway that Beeb could be kept inside - the times
    that we did get him in were just to warm up in the winter for a max of
    10-15 min, all he knew was the outside.  So we decided the best thing
    to do was not to let him die a horrid suffering death outside.
    
    The saddest thing about BeeBee's passing is that Romeo misses him
    terribly, he looks for him under the bushed, under the toolshed, and
    just sits on the stoop know looking for him....
    
    Through this whole ordeal we did learn a vaulable lession - to have our
    cats tested for feline luk.  Romeo's test  did come back positive so 
    were keeping a special eye out for him, and now that he knowns he's
    allowed inside - gosh what a ham!

            Peepers was a 8 week old hym seal point, that was the runt of
    the litter of my sisters cat.  Peepers wll be greatly missed by her
    family that she left behind.  She loved everybody and everbody loved
    her.  She was the kitten of the bunch that just tug at your heart
    strings.

    I've received additional donations this past week and a few generous
    people suggested cardiomyopathy study.  In note 20.136 I asked if any
    readers were familiar with places that do cardio research (which was
    what I was originally hoping to give to this quarter) but nobody
    responded.  Right now the only place I have listed is for the Feline
    Health Center at Cornell, which operates on private donations such as
    ours.

    Since this quarter's funds seem to currently be focused towards cardio, 
    now is the time to mention places that may be in need.  I also have a
    few other ideas for places to donate to that aren't feline-related.

    This quarter's contribution will be going out approximately two weeks
    from tomorrow.

    for Cardio!

    There are some Feliners that are interested in donating to Winn
    although looking back through Nancy DC's records, I see that Winn
    received SLM funds twice already.  The problem is that I can't tell
    what study that they earmarked the money for (if any at all).  

    As an idea of where the money goes to, here's the list from Nancy's

    How about I propose we donate to two places this time around????  I
    realize it's hard to please everyone all the time but this way here
    we can possibly make more people happy?  Something that caught my eye
    from an old (1991) listing of grants is Texas A&M University - FIV
    (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) - Virus-specific T-lymphocyte responses
    in cats experimentally infected with FIV. 

    Cheryl, this may be too much work, but perhaps you could send a letter
    to some of these schools and the Winn foundation etc.  asking what 
    areas of feline research they are involved in.  Also, what specifically
    would money go to and should you earmark for something special or could
    it be divided amongst the different studies.

    Well, one of the good things about donating to someplace like The
    Winn Foundation is that the money goes to research to help cats
    in all areas, not just one specific geographic area.  Since our 
    group is so spread out it seems like this would be a way to insure 
    that, in some way, everyone benefits from the donations we're making.

    An executive decision was made by several of the people that donated
    this quarter to put some of the contributions towards the Framingham
    Animal Humane Society in Massachusetts.  

    This no-kill shelter is in desperate need of acquiring a new building
    and funds are extremely short right now.  The shelter is so small that
    if one cat gets a URI, all of them do.  There is no space to segregate
    the healthy cats from the not-so-healthy cats and therefore, the vet
    bills for kitty drugs have become astronomical.

    Someone sent me mail and asked if we were still going to be giving to
    Cardio and the answer is yes.  We are splitting up the donations, some
    to cardio, some to the needy shelter....

    I just got a copy of the Morris Animal Foundation newsletter and they
    are doing a study of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy right now.  They are
    trying to determine if there is a link between tumors that stimulate
    excess growth hormones and HCM.  There seems to be a link.  Anyway, in
    laymans terms, they have been using a test created for dogs to work the
    study, but the dog test doesn't work very well.  They first have to
    create a test for cats, and then do the research.  
    
    Having lost a cat to Hypertrophic Cardio in the past, I am very
    interested in this study.  This study could also enlighten us as to
    whether this form of cardio is genetic in nature.  Many vets feel that
    it is, but others feel that it isn't.  If it can be the result of a
    tumor, then maybe it isn't genetic.  When my cat died of HCM, we
    necropsied only the heart, which was what the cardiologist suggested,
    so if there was a tumor some where, we wouldn't have caught it on
    necropsy.
    
    Maybe a donation could be made to Morris Animal Foundation and
    earmarked for this HCM study?

    That may be, but the question was whether anyone knew of a place that
    was doing studies on Cardio.  Two places have been suggested, and both
    times someone has said "we already gave to them."  We may have given to
    them, but did we earmark it for cardio?  Giving to a place that funds
    studies on cat illnesses is broader in scope that donating to regional
    shelters, but this is just my opinion.

    I may be losing it, but I could have sworn I put a note in here
    yesterday about this quarter's donation going to help the pets that
    have been victims of the flooding in the midwest, but now I can't find
    it! :-(
    
    Anyway, Karen Kolling contacted me today, and mentioned that the place
    that we sent the money for Hurricane Andrew victims was here in
    Massachusetts, and was an international organization.
    
    I was thinking that I would contact them to see if there is a special
    fund earmarked for the flood victims, and maybe send the money to them
    for that purpose, even though they have received money from us before.
    
    Would anyone be opposed to the fund going to that cause this quarter? I
    haven't really had too many other suggestions (read, none) for other
    places.
    
    I'll be trying to contact them to check and see if money can be
    earmarked for this purpose through them, and I'll wait a couple days to
    hear from all of you out there.

    Any news of where our Missip. flood contributions will do the most good?
    
    As I am sure some of you must have seen, last night on CNN news they
    had another item on pet rescue.  The Coast Guard and Humane
    Society(ies) are training volunteers to help rescue pets from roof
    tops.  Great!
    
    My guess is that a big concern now is, even for those who really care 
    for their pets and want them back, there will be no where for them to 
    set up home in and won't be for several months.  Then there is the 
    problem of the many barn cats that will probably go unclaimed, where 
    will they be housed.  The shelters are facing not only a problem of 
    feeding these animals but of finding a place to house them. I suppose
    it will be like getting a years count of stray cats, but all in one
    week.  
    
      
    

    Well, I have a call in with the IFAW (International Fund for Animal
    Welfare) where we sent money for the Hurricane Andrew pets, and they
    are making a decision this week on whether or not to get involved witht
    he flood situation, and will gaet back to me with the decision.
    
    If anyone has the name and/or address of an association that they know
    is helping the critters out there, please let me know, and maybe I'll
    send the money directly to them, instead of using a middle man. If
    that sounds OK to everyone else that is.

      This note is directly related to #566, but I thought a separate one
    would be good...since it'll get everyones attention sooner..
    
      The current disaster in the midwestern US will surely rank as one of
    the most terrible disasters in this century. While nobody should
    minimize the HUMAN tragedy and suffering that these terrible floods has
    caused and is continuing to cause, during such times we sometimes
    forget to consider the terrible tragedy that our furry friends go
    through...
    
      For whatever reasons, animals become separated, lost and sometimes
    are simply abandoned during stressful circumstances. I have spoken to
    numerous individuals during the past few weeks who have asked "How can
    we do something to help"?....so I did some rresearch, and found a place
    that is doing something in the flooded areas.
    
       The SPCA in St. Louis Missouri has been embarked on a day-and-night
    heroic campaign to save animals of all kinds, from deer to rabbits and
    all forms of pets...dogs, cats, birds...etc. The major petfood
    companies have been very generous with food donations, and numerous
    other companies have donated supplies. I spoke to them over the
    weekend, and asked what they needed---other than 3-4 months without any
    more rain!! Surprisingly, they have retained their sense of humor, and
    that got a laugh... 
    
       They have rescued hundreds of cats, dogs, baby deer, rabbits, etc,
    and are setting up temporatry shelters, finding foster homes, and will
    be continuing this effort indefinitely. However, their resources--even
    with the generosity of manufacturers, are strained, and they need MONEY
    to be able to continue with immunizations, medical help for injured
    animals, and supplies that re not readily available by donation.
    Currently they are trying to find some company to donate plastic bags
    to fill with food...since the companies donate bulk supplies and they
    need to break it out to distribute to the various facilities that ey
    have.

    send the SLMF this quarter directly to them.

    It has been brough to my attention by a few FELINERs, that they would
    also like to help the Pat Brody Shelter out this quarter, if there is
    enough in the fund to make it worthwhile to split it between the
    Midwest and the PBS.
    
    Well, if I add the donation I was going to send to the PBS into the
    fund, we have 175.00, plus a couple of other noters said they are
    sending donations. My feeling is that if we can get at least 200.00 in
    theh fund, it would be OK to split. That would help each organization
    out by at least 150.00 after matching gifts.
    
    I'm willing to handle any more donations that people want to send to me
    to be split between the two organizations, or you can send them
    directly to wherever you want. Just let me know what you want to do, as
    I'd like to get the fund out before this quarter ends! ;-) (kidding, I
    just want to get the money ot there to help.)

    Just wanted to let everyone know that this quarter's SLMF will be split
    between the St. Louis SPCA (helping the animals in the Midwest) and the
    Pat Brody Shelter for Cats (to help them out of a bad financial
    situation)
    
    I have the matching gift forms all filled out (except the amounts) and
    the cover letters all ready to go (except the amount). I'm waiting for
    a few donations to get to me through the mail, and I'll be firing them
    off in the mail probably theh beginning of next week.
    
    If anyone else that hasn't contacted me, wishes to donate through the

    donation to come before I mail the stuff out.

    Yonee, I have a check for $25 to send...if I remember correctly it
    should be made out to "Silver Lining Fund"?? if not, how?  Also where
    do I send it and do I need to get a matching fund card and sign it?  I
    think it's a great idea to split between flood kitties and the Pat
    Brody Shelter.  I wish I knew of a "no kill" shelter here in Atlanta.

    I have had a few people ask about sending matching gift forms with
    their donations. If you are planning to send 25.00 or more, and wish to
    be able to claim it on your taxes, make the check payable to either
    one of the organizations and fill out a gift form,a nd send both to me.
    I'll ship out all the forms in one envelope with the letter, so they
    know it is all from one group.
    
    I will even out the split with the money already in the fund. You may
    want to contact me off line to see if I'm getting a lopsided amount for
    one group over another, and I'll have you make your check out to the
    other organization.
    
    I hope this is an acceptable solution to the tax problem! Gotta claim
    whatever we can these days! 
    
    The checks not made out directly to the organizations, must be made
    payable to me or I won't be able to cash them. DCU is funny that way!

    Just a note to let folks know that I am adding the name Hook to the
    SLMF this quarter. Hook was a shelter kitty that was semi feral, and
    doing VERY well in the getting social area, when she died suddenly last
    week. They rushed her the the vet, but nothing could be done. They
    think she had heart failure. She was a good girl, and will be missed at
    the shelter.

    Now an update on the donations for the quarter. I have received all but
    one of the donations that I have been notified about. I'm sure that one
    will be in the mail shortly, and I will be sending out the checks as
    soon as I receive this. 
    
    I believe I will have about 450.00 when all the checks are in, so there
    will be a nice donation made to both the SPCA in the Midwest, and to
    the PBS. YEEHAW!!!
    
    I still can't believe the response from so many of you! Especially in

    where I volunteer says that to me all the time! Of course my 'big
    bucks' from the shelter = $0.00, and actually COSTS me close to $10.00
    a week (roast beef and baby food) which means I'm actually PAYING the
    shelter to be a volunteer! 
    
    What's wrong with that picture!? ;-) Not a bloody thing from where I
    sit! (The above amount doesn't include the catnip I buy to make toys,
    or the yarn for making little afghans to keep them comfy!)

    Hi All!
    
     I received thank you's from the receipients of last quarter's SLMF.
    
    The one from Missouri, is a cute card with dogs, a kitty and a horse
    looking over a fence thingy. It's cute. The card just says it thanks
    the FELINERs for the donation with a great big "THANK YOU!" written in
    at the bottom. I really didn't expect much more from them, as I'm sure
    they are close to being overwhelmed by the donations and food and such
    coming in. I'm glad they acknowledged the donation though, so I know
    the check was really cashed by them, and not stolen! 8-}
    
    The one from the Pat Brody shelter is a bit longer, and I will enter it
    as the next reply.

    Sadly, a name for the next round of donations. My brother's family had
    to put Benny to sleep last week at the age of 14. Benny was all black
    with one little white spot. He started life as a bachelor kitty, living
    with my brother when he got out of the Army (my brother, that is, not
    Benny) and, through the years, found himself camping in the treehouse 
    with my nephew and riding around in my niece's doll carriage. I'm not
    sure how happy Benny was about the latter, but he purred through it
    all. 
    
    As fate would have it, the week Benny died, a stray Momcat showed up at
    the neighbors' and shortly delivered four kittens. So, while the family
    mourns Benny, they are deciding which of the kittens they will adopt.

    Yonee...please add Midgets name to the Silver Lining Memorial!!!
    
    Some of you might remember my note awhile back explaining the
    situation with Midget.  Midget was one of our shelter babies who
    was 1 1/2 years old...but never grew and only weighed about 3 pounds.
    She looked like a 3 month old kitten.
    
    Midget had a very rough start on life and was hand-fed, totally
    pampered by Priscilla, and visited many vets who could not diagnose
    her problems (including specialist).   Awhile back Midget started 
    going down hill...her kidney's were giving up and she had many other
    medical problems. Priscilla did all she could to try and save this baby
    but because she was so special...I'm sure god wanted her to himself!
    
    Even though Midgets life was very short...I can honestly say she
    lived a happy, carefree, spoiled life at Priscilla house for the
    entire year and half and was pampered by all.
    
    My best memories of her was when she was young she used a small square
    kleenix box for her sleeping spot. I also remember the day we stopped by 
    Priscillas and Midget had the run of the house and was terrorizing
    all the adult cats!!  She was a special kitty who was loved by all
    and will be missed....Priscilla feels like she lost a wonderful family
    member.

    Yes, Yonee, it is Stripees.  Cin brought him in for neuter surgery
    which went fine... no problems at all.  They were waiting for him to
    come out of the anesthesia and his heart stopped.  It is so sad. 
    Stripees was a gorgeous cat who passed along his famous genes to his
    babies.  May he live on and on in his offspring.
    
    Yes, here's hoping there are better and brighter days ahead for the
    kitties currently fighting for life in this conference.  I have been
    there too many times, and it never seems to get any easier.
    
    Stripees, along with all the others on this quarters SLM, will be
    greatly missed and always remembered with love.

    sorry that your little guy lost his battle. You're right though, that
    he is now with his friend Tanya, and they are both being watched over

    I wasn't sure where to put this, but I figured this might be a good

    There's a fellow cat lover that desperately needs your prayers.  He's
    got Hepetitis in it's advanced stages.  His liver is not strong enough
    to fight it and he may die from it.  If he actually does make it (a
    miracle in itself), the poisining from the hepetitis has gone to his 
    leg and he may loose his leg. 
    
    Please, pray for Tom Walsh .. He's a wonderful man and really loves his

    Yonee, my sister-in-law just called and they had to put their
    dog (a White Lab) named Josh, down a couple of days ago.  She and 
    my brother adopted him before they got married (over 8 years ago)
    and it was extremely difficult to make the decision - let alone 
    take Josh for his last ride! (sniff)

	  Well, it's that time again. Time to decide where to send this 
	quarter's donations. I don't have a lot of funds at this time,
	so as it stands, there will be only one recipient of the fund.
	right now I have only 105.00 total. Splitting it would make the 
	donations very small, even with matching funds, and I like to
	feel like we made an impact to the organization.

	  One of the noters sent me the address for a small no kill 
	shelter in Maine called PALS. I would like to send them some 
	money if the noters agree.

	  If I get more donations (like I did last quarter 8-) ) I got 
	the name and address of a no kill shelter in Washington state,
	called Hooterville Pets, that I think deserves a little extra
	money also. I also like the fact that it is on the west coast!
	
	  Again, if I can get enough donations to give each of these 
	places over 100.00 each with matching funds, it would be worth
	splitting I think.

	  If anyone has any other names to add to the memorial list,
	or would like to make a donation, send me mail, or send a
	check or whatever, to my home, or I could supply you my
	badge number, and you could make a transfer through DCU right
	to the fund account.

	  Please let me know if you feel these places sound acceptable
	to you all, or make suggestions. If you make suggestions, please
	include the full name and mailing address for the organization.
	
	  The next note will have the present list I have for the 
	quarter. We had to do a back up recently on my disk, so if

    A suggestion has also been made to try to include the littel kitten

    I think this is a wonderful suggestion, but with the funds sitting

    Well, I have received quite a few replies and mail messages concerning
    where this quarter's money should go, and everyone has said to send the
    money to Mittens.
    
    I would like to contact the Nashua Humane before we send the funds, to
    check on the status of the collection, and the status of Mittens also.
    
    Would it be possible for someone in the Nashua area to make the call?
    They are checking our phone bills here VERY carefully lately, and I'd
    rather not put a toll call on my phone if at all possible.
    
    I'd really appreciate any help in this matter. I'd like to get the
    donation out ASAP, so little mittens won't have to wait to long to have
    her leg fixed.

	I have some status, but I must admit I find it difficult to
	get information out of them (they seem to be not well
	organized, maybe due to the volunteer nature of the setup?).

	When I was over there last Sat. paying the vet bill, they
	also let me see her.  She was purring away and looking cute.
	They had sprayed her for fleas too.  She was still being
	boarded at the vet (the vet & the humane society are in
	the same building, though are two seperate legal entities)
	because the humane society was full.  I also dropped off
	serveral of the "Digital Matching Gift" forms in case
	any DECies stopped by with a donation.  Earlier on
	Sat. I was told someone did call up and donated $15 over
	the phone.  Also on Sat. I inquired if they wait til they
	have enough donations before doing the operation.  They
	indicated that the operation would happen independant of
	the fund.

	A friend of mine called them up yesterday (Tuesday) and
	was told she was still doing good.  When asked if she
	was in any pain they said no.  They also confirmed again
	that the operation will happen "soon" but didn't give
	an exact date.

	The volunteer at the Humane Society who is in charge of
	the fund itself is "Sue" (sorry, I can't remember her
	last name).

     I feel lots better in making this donation to a single furface now! I
    was sort of afraid they would wait to get all the funds before doing
    the surgery. Seems to me the longer they wait, the more work (and cost)
    there would be.
    
     As soon as I get all the SLMF donations that have been pledged, I'll

	More info on Mittens.  She had her operation on Wed and
	is in her recovery period.  Her leg is really swollen.
	The pin (singular, which is weird since the vet told me
	she would need two pins) is in place and the x-ray looks
	good, but they are not sure it will take.  She has been
	using the litter box.  She is also still purring pretty
	(though it wasn't immediate like normal, probably due
	to the situation).

    Ok Gang,
    
     I have received all the donations I was promised, and I am now ready
    to make out the check for the SLMF for Q1 FY94! I am happy to announce
    that we have a grand total of 290.00 in the fund. This is before
    matching gifts! That will give the shelter a grand total of 435.00 to
    help recover the cost of Mittens surgery! Again, this file has come
    to the aid of our furry friends. I'm choked up inside to think of the
    support this one little kitty is getting!
    
     I will post the (hopefully) final list in the next reply. I hope I
    didn't leave anyone off, but if I did, please get back to me right
    away. I'm hoping to send the check off tomorrow sometime. My system was
    down almost all day, so I haven't had a chance to edit the letter and
    such, so it will be tomorrow afternoon at the soonest.
    
     Oh yeah, I wanted to mention that I added Duncan Gibbons name to the
    list. I figure he deserves it. He made the ultimate sacrifice for a
    furface. If anyone disagrees, please let me know.

	Well the friend of mine who has been hoping to adopt Mittens
	called again.  Actually she called yesterday too.  The vet
	is refusing to give out status information except to the owner
	(technically still the Humane Society).  She did get this out
	the Humane Society today ....

	Mittens is still doing good, but they are going to keep her until
	they take the pin out (I had thought the pin stayed in) which they
	said probably won't be for another 3-4 weeks! :-(

    Yup, the pin needs to come back out after the leg heals. 3 - 4 weeks is
    not really all that long. Our adult cat that had a pin in his leg, had
    to keep in in there for a couple of months! 
    
    Ah, the healing power of youth! BTW, the shelter should have received
    the donation by now! 8-)

	I don't know which setup is worse, the Ferry Road
	Animal Hospital (Vet) or the Humane Society!  It's like
	dealing with paronoid children sometimes!

	I went to the Vet to see Mittens and they won't let me
	see her, and didn't want to give me much information.

	In any case, I've found out at least were the surgery
	was performed.  Dr. Porter herself (of the Ferry Road
	Animal Hospital) did the surgery, not an outside
	surgeon.  That I believe means the vet bill will be
	less than what Dr. Porter quoted my brother and I
	when we brought her in (sadly Dr. Porter never
	mentioned this option to us before we released Mittens
	to the Humane Society).  When I explained DECies and
	others had donated money for Mittens surgery and that
	I'd like a rough idea of how much the vet bill will
	be, they declined to say.

	It's very fustrating and the only thing that keeps
	my sanity over this is that it's all for a good cause.

    
    This is really hard to believe!  Maybe an "official" letter from the
    SLM requesting regular updates and visitation rights would help?

    Well, I sent them the money, and the check has cleared, but I haven't
    heard from the Nashua shelter about it yet. With Matching gifts, we
    sent them over 400.00. Not a paultry sum in my mind. I'll be happy to
    write a letter asking for updates and such if the noters want. 
    
    I'll let the noters know as soon as (or if) I hear from them about the
    donations at least.
    
    Let me know if you think I should write to ask for updates. I'm not
    sure how much good it will do if they don't even reply back to say
    thanks for a donation of some bulk, but I'll give it a try.

    Yonee...I'd suggest writing a note to them just stating that you
    had not heard from them so you want to ensure they have received

    nominated Mitten has the recepiant...and how Jeff has been trying to 
    provide the group with updates, but is not getting any info.  As
    President of the SLM you'd really appreciate it if any info on 
    Mitten could be shared.
    
    At the bottom...make a statment "Hopefully your shelter/hospital will
    again be nominated as recipiant of the SLM in future quarters."

with!  It might avoid the frustration of another letter that
doesn't really answer the questions we asked, or being told
"no information is available".  Sometimes it pays to go

	Good news and bad news again.  The friend of mine who is

	the vet) yesterday and was told that Mittens is fine and
	is using the leg.  They are planning to re-X-ray the leg
	(which aparently the pin hasn't been removed from yet) and
	said that Mittens should be ready to go by Christmas!
	My friend was originally told she'd be ready in a month
	which was over a month ago!!! :-((((

     Thanks so much for the update! It sounds like Mittens is really
    recovering well. I thought a month was pretty aggressive for the amount
    of time the pin would be in. The cat we had that had a pin, had it for at
    least a couple of months (maybe even three) before they removed it. Of 
    course he was an adult.I would expect a kitten to heal faster, but it
    will  still taketime. 
    
     Please let us know whenever you get updates on the little doll!

I've just gotten back to follow up the story of Mittens.  I found out about her
plight indirectly and found out from Jeff that the surgery had happened.  We're
both cat-lovers and didn't want to see this poor cat meet an untimely end. So we
gave the Humane Society $100.00, with matching form, so the total is now up to
$585.00.  That should go a long way, I hope.


May Mittens find a safe and loving home!

     I was going to jot a note to Mike Philbrook, just to let him know we'd
    like an update, but I like Len's idea better. 
    
     Len, make sure you address it so Mike will get it. He's in charge
    there, and should be able to give us some info.
    
     And thanks for your extra time and trouble in this matter. Funny, I
    don't really care that the ACTUAL miney we sent might go to food anf
    litter, because I assumed they had already paid for the surgery, and
    were just reimbursing themselves, but they could have at least
    MENTIONED what we did in behalf of Mittens in the letter they sent me!

    I am writing on behalf of the FELINE noters who contributed to this fall's
    Silver Lining Memorial Fund.  We unanimously agreed that this quarter's
    fund should go to support surgery for a kitten named Mittens who was
    brought to your care by one of our noters.  Mittens' story touched us
    all, and after a painful Summer and Fall where so many of us lost so many
    cats and kittens so very dear to us, it was heartening to be able to help
    save one of our feline friends.

    The Fund's contributors have expressed some disappointment and frustration
    that it has been so difficult to learn about Mittens' convalescence, and
    especially that your gracious thank you note to Yvonne Colaianni, the
    Fund's administrator, made no mention of Mittens or her condition and
    prognosis.  This contribution was somewhat unusual in that it was targeted
    at a specific animal; historically, the Fund's contributions have been
    offered in a fairly general way (e.g., to a pet relief effort like those
    mounted for Hurricane Andrew or the midwest floods).  Mittens has thus
    become for us something of a foster kitten and mascot, and the FELINErs
    community has followed her story with great interest and concern.  We
    thought we were helping to save her life, but some of us wonder if instead
    we paid for cat litter.

    We recognize that your services to the Kingdom of Animals require a great
    deal of time and effort, and we are truly grateful for all you have done
    for Mittens; however, we feel a certain bond with her and would greatly
    appreciate you or someone on your staff taking a few moments out from
    your busy schedules to share with us an occasional progress report on
    Mittens, or to allow one of the Feliners to visit her.  Because we are
    spread out all over the country, it would be a special treat if could get
    a picture (even better, a slide or negative that could be used to make
    multiple prints) of Mittens for her supporters. 

    We really do care about this kitten, and look forward to a happy ending
    to this first chapter in what we hope will be a long and wonderful life
    for her.

	to me (he had taken a picture of her the 1st time she
	visited him, ie. before the injury).  I'll ask him if

    Great.  BTW, I've had positive replies back from just about all the
    contributors, so my guess is the letter will go out this weekend.
    Given that we now have access to a picture of Mittens, I'll delete

Thanks, adding them is fine by me.
They were both very sick and it was "their time" to go. It's good to think that
they're no longer suffering. It's almost harder for me helping to euthanize
healthy animals whose only problem is no home or no longer being wanted than to
put my own pets to sleep. I'm glad the Good news outweighs the Bad at the
vets; I couldn't handle working at a shelter or humane assoc.

     I didn't think I could do volunteer work at a shelter either, but I do
    help out at two no kill cat shelters now, and those kitties are so
    spoiled..... They are warm and dry, and get good food, and get all
    their shots that are needed, and go to the vet when they get sick, and
    the only time we put anyone down, is if they are VERY ill, and the
    prognosis is very bad.
    
     I sort of feel bad for these guys, because they doen't have too much
    space to call their own, but they (for the most part) don't seem too
    unhappy either. Most of them act grateful that they are safe and warm,
    and all the volunteers pet them and cuddle them, or work with the timid
    ones, to try to make them adoptable sometime down the road. It's very
    rewarding for me.
    
     I couldn't work at a shelter if it was not no kill though! Not in a
    hundred years!
    
     Your loving pets will be rememebred in this quarter's memorial though.
    It's wonderful of you to let them go when the time was right.

	Great news (I hope)!!  My friend called yesterday and was
	told they would be taking the X-ray and then removing the
	pin either yesterday or today (Wednesday) and will be
	ready to go *this* Friday!!!!!

	Well they lied about taking the x-rays, etc when they
	said they would.  They only too an x-ray this past
	Tuesday.

	Great news however, my friend officially adopted Mittens
	on Sat. with $50 in cash (they don't take personal checks).
	And yesterday my friend took Mittens home!  The vet wanted
	to keep the pin in for two more weeks so she still has to
	go back to have the pin removed.

	Mittens is still very small!  I don't think she's going to be
	a very big cat.  She still purrs like crazy!

	My friend also happens to be my downstairs tenent so I'll be
	able to see (and report) her progress first hand now.

	She's been in her new home for about 3 weeks I believe.
	As I write this she still has the pin in but tommorow
	(Tuesday) they are supposed to remove it (for sure,
	because I'm told they said they were not going to
	take an x-ray this time).

	She does have a slight limp when she walks, and when
	she sits on the top a couch she leaves the bad leg
	hanging over one side.  But when she runs you can't
	tell she has a limp at all!

	In addition to having the double paws (which looks like
	a thumb) on the front paws, she does have an extra
	toe on each hind paw too!

	She loves to play with the other cats in the house (both
	my tenent's cats downstairs, and my cats upstairs) and
	is quite the agressor for her small size.

	She doesn't like to be held too long though, or she
	shows her alter-ego (she grouls, hisses, swats with
	her paw, and bites).  But while she's on ground
	level she's still a little sweetheart.

Last November, as I was temping in MRO1, I entered a note to talk about my loss
of Scruffy.  I did get some replies from OLD feliners and from The Silver Lining
Memorial, to enter Scruffy's name.  I have read, I'm back resently, the Silver
Lining Memorial note and was sad to not see my dear Scruffy not mentioned.  I
have not been able to send a donation yet, as I am just back to work and while I
was not working, was not able to collect.  I will be, in the next two weeks
sending a donation.  Please honor my dear girls name, we had her 7 years and was
the start of many a cats we tried to save and did save.

Also, last August we lost our other girl, Zeebee.  She was 10 years old and died
of a kidney disease.  We had her for one year.  She was an abandoned house cat
and was real loving.  Scruffy died from an unknown diagnosis. She was Feline
Leukemina positive and she might of been having small strokes.

We have to boys, Dot and Smucky now, but I sure miss my girls.

    I want to mention an unknown kitty.
    
    She/he might have a name, could be someone's baby or could be one of
    many Furfaces nature takes care of.
    
    She/he was found, Friday along the side of the road by my husband.  He
    picked up the poor frozen body so no one would run over it.  Place it
    gently on top of the snow banking hoping someone would see it and maybe
    if it is someone's baby, they could say good-bye.
    
    He didn't know what else to do.  This is not too far from us and I'm
    not sure if it has been claimed, if not I guess nature or the town will
    have to take care of the poor furface.
    
    It must be hard out there this winter if someone doesn't own you.  Most
    find there way to my door in this area, I just hope she/he has found
    happieness with all the furfaces in heaven.
    
    I just felt she/he needed to be remembered somehow.  I'm quite the
    softy.

    Budapest I drove and saw a lovely light brown furry and bloody thing
    what was once a cat... 
    
    Me and my wife, if sitting together in the car, always hope that the
    other perhaps had not notice the remains... and we always lie out loud
    'Was just a piece of old rag or the like...' if we see the other
    noticed it, too. I know it is childish. I see the death and I lie I do
    not see it. Often happened we both said "Just rag..." and we both
    secretly looked at each-others fingers, which were of course crossed
    like tiny paws, then we short looked at each-other, with wet eyes and
    said nothing for a while...

	I watched, once again, this past Sunday, Thomasina on Disney and I taped
it this time so my Mom can watch it.  Thought about our Scruffy who left us last
year and Zeebee and the "unknown" kitty we mentioned.  Hope he/she saw the

donation for them all to your home address.

    I haven't been able to be in here in a while and I really hate the fact
    that the first note writing is in THIS topic, but............

    As some of you may recall, not too long ago, my roommate, Ginny, had
    to say "goodbye" to Neely, her 16-1/2 yr old burmese.  As well as her
    own pain and missing of Neely, her other cat Lipton also was having a
    tough time missing her - seems he was spending a lot of time a night
    visiting Neely while the other cats were in assorted bedrooms fast
    asleep..............so when Adrienne Blundell put in a note about 5 new
    babies, we decided to go take a look and about three weeks ago, we brought 
    home two new kittens, brother & sister, who were named (at that time)
    Tiggr & Eeyore - appropriate since their mother was named Piglet !

    Unfortunately, it turned out that Tiggr (the sister) was not to be 
    with us for very long.  We brought the two home on Saturday, by way
    of a vet check (both seemed fine, altho' small - 3/4 # for Tiggr and 
    1/2 # for her brother Eeyore, got their first kitten shots & de-wormering),
    and a quick Dawn Bath as soon as they got home to take care of the fleas.
    It wasn't until late Saturday that Tiggr finally adjusted enough to eat,
    but by the end of day Saturday, both had eaten, drunk, peed and pooped,
    so we thought we were doing just fine.

    On Sunday, however, "someone" got sick on the bed and it turned out that
    it was Tiggr - by that evening, she wasn't doing so good and an emergency
    call to the vet on call said to eye-dropper feed her some sugar-water,	
    try to get the liquids into her and keep her warm.....that done, she
    didn't vomit any more on Sunday and did well through the night......

    Monday, we both had to go to work, but Tiggr seemed fine during the 
    morning and when Ginny got home that afternoon and a call to the vet's
    said that the bloodwork done on Saturday had come back fine - no FELUK,
    no FIV, no problems seen......... however, about an hour later Tiggr
    started vomitting again and Ginny took her immediately up to our regular
    vet - she (the vet) gave her something to calm her stomach and forced
    liquids in to hydrate her, checked other vitals which all seemed ok and
    sent her home with the same basic instructions...........

    Tuesday Ginny was home with her all day as she (Ginny) wasn't feel well
    either and they got lots of cuddle time together all day.  Tuesday 
    evening, all looking well, Ginny came downstairs for an hour to have
    supper and see the other animals.  Just before 8 pm, Ginny went back up
    to check on Tiggr, and in the course of that one short hour, she had
    gone drastically downhill - she called, rushed her up to the vet where
    they kept her overnight - Tiggr had started to go into shock, had a
    very low body temperature, but they had no idea what was going on.....
    she never made it through the night..................

    The vet did an autopsy at our request, to see if there was something to
    be concerned with for the brother and the other siblings, but did not find 
    anything and believe that it may have been a virus but will never
    (unfortunately) know for sure.  As Ginny's note to Adrienne said, Tiggr 
    was loved as much as any cat could ever have been loved in her short time \
    with us  and we know that Adrienne loved her too.  As hard as it hit
    the whole family, it was difficult to believe she was only with us for
    those few days..............

    So Tiggr had gone to be with Neely and all the others we've all lost
    this year.........I sent a note to Yonee the day she died asking her
    to be added to the memorial list and, when I forwarded it to Ginny, it
    was especially difficult, knowing she has TWO cats now on the list for
    this go-around.  
 
    We love you Tiggr !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!


P.S.By the way, it is/was very hard to have an "Eeyore" without a "Tiggr" 
    so Ginny renamed him to "Dickens".  Dickens for two separate reasons, - 
    first he *is* a "little dickens" and into everything, and second because 
    Charles Dickens wrote "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times" 
    and it certainly was !

    Could I ask that my loving Holly be remembered. (note 569.xx)  She was
    a very special part of our family for almost 12 years.  We got her just
    barely a month after our wedding, and I still remember this tiny grey
    fluffball in this huge cardboard box, in the Agway store in Northboro.
    
    As much as my husband tried to insist that he just couldn't stand cats,
    it was him that she always went to, and it was my husband who insisted
    on making sure during her last weeks on earth, that she be comfortable,
    and held her close on his chest every night while he watched TV.
    
    We miss ya Holly!

Yonee,

My dog, Bailey, passed away this past Monday.  I would like to make a 
contribution and have his name added to the Silver Lining Memorial.

Bailey was more person than dog and if he had to guess whether he was human,
dog or cat, he would have picked Human first and Cat second.  He had NO idea
he was a dog!  Our cats trained him well when he was a puppy and he never
forgot their lessons as new cats were added to our household.  Picture a
90-100 lb. dog laying absolutely motionless so as not to disturb a kitten
who was sleeping on his back!  He would wake us up in the middle of the
night and ask us to move a cat away from him so that he could get up.

Bailey had lung cancer which was diagnosed right before Christmas.  
    Fortunately, he was able to choose his own time to go and had a heart 
    attack instead of a lingering death with the cancer.

It's still unbelieveable to us that he's gone.  I feel for the new puppy we
will be looking to adopt in the Spring - Bailey is a tough act to follow.

Please let me know how to make a contribution.  Bailey will be cremated by
the Animal Rescue League in Goffstown, NH.  I'm not sure if a donation has
ever been made to them in the past but maybe at least some of this quarters
donation could go to them (if agreed by the other Feliners of course!).

    And Yonee, one more....Ashton, the top house cat at Ferry Road Animal
    Hospital died recently.  It was a terrible, terrible thing, and I'd
    like to have him remembered, too.
    
    Ashton was one hell of a great cat.  Those of you who go to Ferry Road
    will undoubtedly miss him as much as I will.

    This may be of some interest to you, perhaps not.  I received as club
    secretary, a letter from the Robert H. Winn Foundation the other day.
    It is asking clubs and individuals to donate to something special. 
    They are getting together with UC Davis to "mind meld" on the topic of
    FIP.  They will have Niels Pederson and Jean (?) Wolf who is a breeder
    as the main coordinators.
    
    I can bring in the letter and type it here if there is interest or
    people can talk to me off line.  The jist of the whole letter is that
    they feel it is time that scientists try to focus more closely on the
    cure and testing of this disease and be able to differentiate it from
    other enteric corona virus'.  
    
    I am hoping our club will donate, and maybe the feliners might care to
    also.

    re: International Feline Infectious Peritonitis and Enteric
        Coronavirus Workshop
    	The University of California, Davis - August 12-14, 1994
    	Presented by the Center for Companion Animal Health
    	and the Robert H. Winn Foundation
    
    Dear Club Secretary;
    
    Although this letter is addressed to your club, it is also intended for
    each of your members as individuals.  I say this because I am writing
    about FIP, a disease which can affect any breeder in the most serious
    way.  Why, then, a letter to the club?  Because we need the help of
    both clubs and individuals to fight this deadly diseas.
    
    As you may be aware, FIP is almost always a fatal disease.  In spite of
    many years of study there is still no reliable means for diagnosis or
    treatment and the effectiveness of the vaccine is not yet certain.  The
    disease continues to decimate catteries and cause kitten deaths,
    sometimes months after they are sold to others.  We believe that
    veterinary scientists must be encouraged to focus their work on the
    management of this disease in the cattery environment.
    
    To this end, the Foundation has joined with the University of
    California Center for Companion Health to bring together an invited
    group of leading FIP researchers, experienced cat breeders and
    veterinary practitioners for a face to face discussion and interaction. 
    The workshop, co-chaired by Niels Pedersen, DVM, PhD, and Janet Wolf, a
    CFA breeder, will review current knowledge of the disease, its
    relationship to feline enteric coronaviruses, potential diagnoses and
    therapy.  Proceedings will be published in a special edition of "Feline
    Practice," a veterinary journal which will be available to cat
    fanciers.
    
    Earlier, I mentioned that we will need the help of clubs and
    individuals.  In order to determine the implications of the disease in
    catteries, we will send a survey to randomly selected breeders
    soliciting information on their experience with FIP.  NOW, we are
    asking clubs for donations to support this event.  We know that CFA
    clubs have been asked to contribute to a variety of causes - all
    genuine and worthy, so we understand that your treasury may not support
    a major contribution.  With this in mind, we are asking that clubs
    donate some modest amount, possibly $50 to $200, to help us proceed
    with this important workshop - whatever amount the club can afford.
    
    Over the years, CFA clubs, as a group, have provided the greatest
    amount of funds available to the Winn Foundation.  Some have been
    steady benefactors, others have contributed as they could.  What about
    your club?  Whether you've donated before or not, a donation now would
    put your club in the good company of those that are willing to help
    prevent the threat of FIP to the lives of cats.

    Hi All,
    
     Well, I think it's about time we sent out the fund. 8-) I still don't
    have a great deal of money, and with no more matching gifts, it's even
    less! :-(
    
     I have 275.00 though, and would like to send at least part of this to
    Cardio research, if someone can please give me a name and address of
    someone to send it to.
    
     I don't know if folks are planning to send more donations to me or
    not, but if you are, please contact me right away, so I'll know to wait
    for the donation.
    
     Rumors are flying around once again, and the rumors, for the first
    time, seem to include my group, so I don't know if I'll be around much
    longer myself. We have a 'communications' meeting this morning after my
    boss spent two days at woods meetings. He said don't panic, and I'm
    not, but I want to make sure the fund goes out 'just in case'.
    
     I guess we just don't know from week to week if we will be here the
    next week. It's very stressful.
    
     So, anyway, I'd also like to send a few bucks to a small shelter up in
    Maine (I think that's right) that a FELINEr wrote to me about. It's a
    small no kill shelter that is struggling to make ends meet. If no one
    has any objections, I'd like to split the fund between Cardio (becuase
    we have lost kitties to this awful disease), and the little shelter in
    Maine.
    
     Let me know, either here, or by electronic mail, if you agree,
    disagree, or want to send a donation.

    Yonee, I think splitting the funds between cardio and the shelter is a
    good idea.  I believe the Morris Foundation does cardio research along
    with other research.  Just specify that we want the fund to go to
    cardio research.

The Senior Leadership Team recently approved a number of actions that 
will cut costs and minimize expenses. One of those actions calls for 
the suspension of the company match for employee charitable 
contributions made through the Matching Gift and United Way programs.

The following will provide more specific information on each of the 
program areas.

    EMPLOYEE MATCHING GIFTS

    The Employee Matching Gift program will be suspended at the end of 
    business on Thursday, June 30, 1994. 
    
    Employee gifts made to Digital-approved organizations by June 
    30th will be matched at $0.50-on-the-dollar, PROVIDED THAT the 
    completed Employee Matching Gift form is received FROM THE 
    ORGANIZATION by the Digital Matching Gift office NO LATER THAN 
    June 30th at 5:00PM (Eastern Time).
       	  
    
    UNITED WAY MATCHING PROGRAM
    
    The company match of $0.50-on-the-dollar will be suspended for any 
    future employee United Way campaigns.
    
Within the next few days, the Corporate Community Relations staff will 
notify the recipient organizations of the program changes.

    Ok, at the beginning of next week, I'll be sending out the funds,

    I will be sending half of the money to a shelter in Augusta, Maine 
    called PALS Animal Shelter. This shelter was supplied to me by Crystal
    Estes a while ago, and I'm really glad to say they are finally getting
    a donation! All the natural disasters lately have been sucking the fund
    up quickly. I hope there are no more of those soon. It's too awful!

    Hi All,
    
     Well, I guess I'll be officially out of here June 20th or 21st. I've
    only had one offer to take over the fund, and that was Linda Lust.
    Linda, are you still going to be here? Does your offer still stand? I'd
    like to take you up on it, since I'm emptying the account today. I just
    used a savings account with DCU for the fund. Nothing fancy. I didn't
    worry about the small amount of interest that needed to be claimed. It
    was never more than a dollar or two, since most of the money came in at
    once near the end of the quarter! ;-)
    
     Let me know if you can take it, and you can take it over as of now. I

    sister's kitty, Mariah, was lost to an unusual paralysis of her hind
    quarters.  She was a beautiful, petite all black kitty.  Never got 
    much bigger than her kittenhood size.   She was 8 years old.

    Has anyone seen or heard from Yonee lateley? How is she?

    I had a terrible job to do last night.  I found one of the apartment
    cats in the road last night.  He had been hit by a car.  It appeared
    that he'd been hit several times by the time I found him.  I was on
    my way to the grocery store.  So, I bought some plastic kitchen 
    garbage bags and when I returned home I made a u-turn, turned my
    emergency flashers on and left my car in the road blocking other
    vehicles from using that lane while I got out and collected the 
    body. 
    
    It was a terrible job.  Not one I'd wish on anyone.  I was trying
    desperately not to touch the body since I didn't have gloves or
    anything besides the bag.  The body was a real mess, especially
    in the head area. 
    
    I got him collected and drove over to the Emergency Animal Hospital.
    They asked me if I thought he was still alive and I told them I was
    pretty sure he was dead.  They let me wash the blood off my hands
    and told me they'd take care of him.  I gave them information on 
    the location I found him in for the DOA records.  I was balling my 
    eyes out by this time.
    
    He was a nice, friendly male cat...gray and white with beautiful
    copper eyes.  I don't know who he belonged to.  He used to appear
    on my patio for a meal now and then with the 4 I'm fostering (which,
    incidientally, are now all indoor cats).
    
    Would the current administrator of the Silver Lining Memorial please
    put him on the list.  I don't know his name.  I simply called him
    "Gray boy".

    What a terrible sight to have to see, but thank goodness you were
    there to save his body from further mutilation by cars and people
    who didn't care enough to stop.
    
    Hopefully, his death was mercifully quick and painless.  You're
    a wonderful person to have taken care of him in the short time
    that you knew him.  And you took care of the poor thing, even
    in death.

    Thanks for all the good wishes.  I'm getting better though I'm still
    sad that I haven't the foggiest idea who he belongs to.  That area
    has been tough on both people and animals lately.  The very next
    day there was a very bad car accident near that same spot and someone
    was badly hurt.  How odd, it's really not an especially bad spot
    normally.
    
    Anyway, I have a little trouble when I'm driving and see another 
    animal by the side of the road.  My mind goes back to all the bodies
    I've taken in or called animal control on and then lands firmly on
    thoughts of Gray Boy.  It takes a huge amount of control to try to 
    refocus before the tears come.  I'm using the Scarlett O'Hara method
    of mind management.  I can't think about that now, I'll think about
    that some other time.  (Actually, I think she said she'd think about
    it tomorrow "after all, tomorrow is another day").  Then I try to 
    find some other thought process that will involved all the brain 
    cells.

    Please add Daisy (my beautiful parakeet) to the Silver Lining Memorial.
    
    Daisy has been with us for 14 years...and was a pretty old lady for
    a parakeet.  We lost Daisy this weekend...and both Ernie and I have
    broken hearts.  She was with us for a VERY long time....and it's 
    amazing how quiet the house seems without her little 1/2 pound 
    body chirping away constantly.  Everyone we have talked to say
    that a parakeet who is very well taken care of, usually lives to
    12-13 years of age...so I guess we can say we gave Daisy a wonderful
    life.
    
    Daisy loved all of the cats but she was the ruler!!!  She use to
    tease the heck out of them. They would walk by and she would tilt 
    her head so she was staring down at them..and she would "bitch" as 
    loud as could be.   There was multiple times my kitty, Poco would
    climb the wall casing to stare at Daisy..and Daisy would jump to
    the nearest birch...and yap right in Poco's face!!! 
    
    We will miss you Daisy...and you will always be in our hearts.

    Deb, Please add Mitzi to the Silver Lining Memorial.  Mitzi
    was my sisters 17+ year old kitty, who was put to rest last
    Saturday.  If you remember the amazing Mitzi story I wrote
    last May when she was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on
    her right paw which was amputated.  While going through the
    amputation, Mitzi also had her thyroid removed.   She recovered
    completely from both these operations and had a wonderful healthy
    spoil rotten life the last 10 months.
    
    Mitzi started to go down hill last week...and after multiple
    vet visits and tests they determined Mitzi had alot of fluid
    in her lungs; as well as a very large liver and possibly a
    collapsed lung.  Further tests showed there was alot of protein 
    in the fluid...and the best guess was she had either FIP or 
    lymphonima (another tumor).   The vets thought they could
    keep Mitzi alive a few more months...but the quality of life
    would not be good.
    
    After many agonizing days of seeing Mitzi loose all her strength,
    stop eating/drinking and having a complete blank look in her eyes,
    my sister made the decision to end Mitzi's suffering.  Mitzi is
    now at peace with many of our furry friends, but my sister is
    at a complete loss without her baby.  17 years is a very long time
    to have to say goodby to your companion; especially a furry companion
    who had many human qualities.
    
    We love you Mitzi...and your memories will stay with us forever!

    I'm very sorry to hear that your sister lost Mitzi. She was doing so

         My heartfelt condolences to you and your sister on your loss of
    Mitzi.  She was a fighter, and had a wonderful life!

	Please add George and Sheba to the list.

	George (Curious George) was the First Cat, although not
	the Head Cat.  His position in the household was that of
	moral arbiter and willing vessel for human adoration.
	He was always dignified, even when attempting to impregnate
	his also-neutered housemate Pipsqueak, and getting only a
	scratch on the nose for his efforts.  All white, blue-eyed,
	double-pawed, and of considerable size, he always stood out in
	a crowd.  His favorite expression when communicating with
	the cook and the box cleaner was "I told them not to do it!"
	while watching the less dignified members of the household
	commit mayhem.  With typical class and dignity, he died in
	his sleep.

	Sheba (Black Lab mix) was a friend of cats.  She gave George
	his due as First Cat, let then-kitten Boss Tweed batter her
	nose with his need sharp kitten claws with batting an eye,
	and let the First Female, Pipsqueak, swing from her snout.
	However, she was not above goosing cats with a wet, cold nose,
	just to watch them leap.  She loved her cats, loved her fellow
	dogs, and loved her people.  She tried to do the "right thing".
	She was not the smartest of dogs...  OK, we had to teach her
	to back up after she got stuck in a lab-width space next to
	the dishwasher.  What she lacked in intelligence was
	overwhelmingly made up for in love and gentle good humor.

    stories about these two from when we had neighboring offices. I know
    that they couldn't have asked for a better life than they had with you

    She moved into my 'in-laws' lives when her previous owner
    went to live nearer his relations.  Since then she worked hard
    at making their lives happier.
    
    During recent, very stressful times, she provided much love and 
    comfort.  They adored her.
    
    Unfortunately a fortnight ago, Georgie became very ill, and 
    inspite of everyones efforts she didn't respond to treatment.
    The decision to end her pain and suffering was taken yesterday.
    
    She'll be sorely missed but never forgotten.
    It was a joy and a privilege to have known her.

    The black Laboratory Cat, Liza (pr. 'leesah') passed last week on heavy
    cancer. She was my 'colleague' quite a long time in the Research
    Institute I used to work for for some years. I still went to pay her a
    visit every now and then to crawl her behind the ears. She was quite
    old and weary, did not meow (just opened her mouth as if...) any more
    but never left out a headbutt if we met. She lived in the lab for 20
    (yes, twenty!) years and 'produced' dozens of kittens, a lot still
    there and cared for, of course, by the lab staff. She was a good and
    quiet compagnion of us all and we all miss her. Folks being still in
    the lab or outside as me, we mourn. We hope she feels well now, and we
    once meet at the Bridge.

    A colleague's cat CIRMI (pron. tseermy) had to be put to sleep by her
    vet. The cat had a mouth fouling disease which could not be healed and
    could not be treated any longer. She could not eat and drink and was in
    pains. The vet asked the people to allow to put the cat to sleep. She
    was only 4-5 years old (came-in-feral type). Might she be now free of
    any pain - until all we meet at the Bridge.
    
    Nat, who cannot contribute, but has to lighten his sorrow to tell you
    all if he knows about a dying cat...

    she was about 18 years old, and finally yielded to lung cancer and
    recurring tumors on her paws.  Pitz was a sweet tortoise-shell short
    haired lady; I was privileged to spend some time with her during her
    last days.

    Len,  Please give my sincere condolences to your sister.  She
    must have alot of wonderful memories that she can keep close to her

    Please add my Pretzel to your Silver Lining Memorial.  Pretzel
    was put to sleep last Wednesday during surgery when he was found
    to have cancer of the pancreas.
    
    I had Pretzel for 10 years, since he was a kitten.  He's always
    been very independent and preferred sitting in a nice quiet corner 
    rather than joining in the antics of the other cats.  But every now
    and then, he'd jump in my lap and ask for some attention.
    
    He was always a big boy, but the past few years, he slowly lost
    weight, and his weight dropped dramatically over the past few
    months.  After many tests, x-rays and ultrasound, my vet recommended
    having an exploratory at Tufts.  That's when I received the bad news.
    I couldn't see putting him through any more pain, so I made the 
    hardest decision an animal lover has to make - to put their pet
    to rest and free him from the ravages of his terrible illness.
    
    Rest in peace, Pretzel.  Your feline brother and sisters, and 
    mom and dad miss you.

    MOST appropriate time or the WORST.  I am so sorry about Pretzel.  I
    trully feel for you and hope that after the tears, there will only be

    Please add Tilly (short for Matilda) to the SLM.  Tilly was the family
    dog and my mothers best friend.  She was the home's welcoming
    committee.
    
    Sunday night my mother had to put Tilly down.  Back in April the vet 
    noticed a tumor that was growing on her heart.  Because of her age (13) 
    and the extent of the tumors growth, the vet said that an operation to 
    remove the tumor would probably kill her.  The vet gave Tilly 1 month.  
    
    Well, Tilly was spoiled rotten for the last 5 months of her life.  My 
    mother decided to keep on this earth as long as she was in no pain. 
    Sunday night the pain arrived and Tilly was so weak she could not sit.
    
    Tilly was a great friend and loved by us all.  She'll be greatly missed.

    What a lot of babies lost.  As to Sharon, I've seen a couple of things
    to the effect that people are helping her.  One in a cat products
    catalog that sent her a bunch of stuff.  I don't know if she still
    needs additional help, but considering the number of cats she was
    trying to support, my guess is yes.
    
    How is the Pat Brody shelter doing?

    I have no problem with you sending me the list occasionally for

       The following is a note I received from Debbie J.  The
       good news is that she made it to Texas fine and she is
       now hooked up to her computer.  The bad news is...the
       first note she sent was regarding her friend Ginny's
       kitty, Lipton passing away. (sigh)  If you would like

	Sandy, a sad note - Ginny lost Lipton on Sunday morning
        we still don't know why, we're waiting for the autopsy 
        results to come in.  It was quite a shock as he was fine, 
        having fun playing with the animals we brought with us,
        eating and acting normally.  She put both Lipton and her 
        other cat, Dickens, into separate rooms Sunday morning to 
        give them their flea control (Program) and when Matt went 
        into his room an hour or so later (where Lipton was), he
        found the cat dead.  Needless to say, it's shaken Matt and 
        really devasted Ginny as he was her special cat, adopted 
        from the shelter, and was only ~3-1/2 years old.  I'll let 
        you know what we find out but in the meantime, can you post 
        this in Feline for both of us ?

    Roberta had two ragdolls that died of Cardiomyopathy, but
    I think in both cases it was not instant death because
    both had been treated at Tufts before they died.
    
    I also had a cat who passed away from Cardio...it wasn't
    instant death but he did die within 5 hours of me noticing any
    symptoms. (breathing heavy)
    
    I'm sure Deb will let us know what the results were...and I'll
    be sure to post them here.

    Did this happen after they'd been given the Program?  Just
    worried if that might be a problem, as my cats take it...
    
    

    Karen...it did happen right after she gave it the Program..
    but until they get the results back from the autopsy...they
    will NOT know what the cause of death was.

    When we found our Clementine dead very suddenly a couple of weeks ago,
    it was just 10 days after giving her Program for the first time, but
    our vet assured us that any reaction would have been immediate.  Hope
    this makes those of you worrying a little less worried.  
    
    Clementine died of cardiac arrest at age 13 with a brief history of 
    hyperthroidism when we had been away for 4 days -- she was fine when 
    we left!
    
    It's an awful way to lose a friend!

    I don't know if anyone is still maintaiing this list but, if so, please 
    add Dr. Charles Leighty to the Silver Lining Memorial.
    
    Dr. Leight owned and operated the VIllage Animal Clinic in Goffstown,
    NH.  He had been our veteranarian for 20 years.  He had seen us through
    happy and some very sad times and was always willing to work with us
    and support our decisions.  He will be missed by both his animal
    patients and the humans who loved them.
    
    Dr. Leighty passed away Wednesday night after a long battle with a
    brain tumor.  He leaves his wife and six children and his many animals
    he raised and rescued over the years.  
    
    I like to think that the Rainbow Bridge was very crowded when he
    crossed over.

    Maci is dead.
    
    Maci (pron.: Mutzee, means little bear) was a wonderful blue kitty of
    three years. Ha had severe urinating problems, and did not want to
    suffer - he gave up. He now waits for her mom Caty at the Bridge.

    Well, my beloved Sarah is gone. 
    
    She was an old style seal-point Siamese.
    
    She and I were together for 16.5 years.  She was mostly blind.  And
    was having some respiratory problems.  And two weeks ago, she walked
    out never to return.  
    
    Looking back at it, she hadn't slept with me for a couple of nights
    (which is really unusual for her).  
    
    I had been traveling quite a bit with my job.  Fortunately this
    happened while I was home for a week.  If she had gone when I was 
    away, I could never have dealt with it.

    	yesterday as the poor baby was riddled with cancer.  Akleja

How terribly sad!

I really hope they're outside somewhere or 
if inside passed out real quick from smoke
so they didn't suffer too much. 

As a kid I always used to have panicked moments
at the end of the night lying there thinking how 
I'd get my hamster and the cat out if there was 
a fire, I just couldn't leave them behind...

    
    	No, unfortunately, they were definitely inside.  Read the
    	newspaper article this morning.  The firefighters found them
    	and brought them outside to try and resuscitate them, but to
    	no avail.  Ashlyn is totally devastated.  It appears the fire
    	was caused by a faulty cord on a lamp that was plugged in on
    	their porch (but not switched on).
    
    

    Oh how sad...please send my sincere sympathies to the family.
    
    Fire...it is so scarey, I often wonder if it happened to me how
    I would get 14 cats out of the house. (sigh)

    	I get on the verge of tears everytime I think about how
    	scared those poor babies must have been.  =(  I went home
    	and gave my crew extra cuddles (even though Gilligan whined
    	like he always does!!) last night.
    

    My heart goes out to your friends.  If it's any comfort, the
    pets may well have passed away from smoke inhalation without
    realizing that anything was wrong. It sounds like that's what must
    have happened, from how you describe the fireman's efforts.
    
    I have a carrying case for each of my babies, but I dread trying to
    round up four of them, with at least two probably behind the stove or
    refrigerator and me panic-striken for them.

re carry cases: I thought about those myself and decided they'd be trapped 
in it if I fell so wouldn't even stand a chance of saving themselves... 
down a wet baggy jumper that I was wearing was my conclusion ... 
there just isn't a way is there...
