Soap Opera Central Expands
Welcome to GH2 Online, your online source
of information on the new ABC soap Port
Charles. Since the show has yet to debut,
you'll notice that we do not have the
vast array of areas you might be familiar
with. But as the debut date approaches,
we'll provide you with the Scoop, recaps,
polls, message boards, and all the usual
information.
A Look at Some Port Charles Residents
Ten new characters have just been added
to the list for ABC's newest daytime
drama--Debbi Morgan, Renee Allman,
Michael Dietz, Lisa Ann Hadley, Jennifer
Hammon, Rib Hillis, Mitch Longley, Nolan
North, Jay Pickett. Set to debut on June
1st with a special two-hour episode, Port
Charles will begin in its regular time
slot on Monday, June 2nd (12:30-1:00
p.m., ET).
What follows is a list of the actors and
the characters they will be portraying.
Jennifer Hammon joins the cast as Dr.
Karen Wexler Cates, a character who
debuted on GENERAL HOSPITAL. Just before
leaving town on GH with her husband
Jagger, she learned that Scott Baldwin
(Kin Shriner) was her biological father.
Karen has been overcoming the trauma of
her past while attending medical school,
but is having problems dealing with her
husband's dangerous line of undercover
police work in San Francisco. Her journey
begins as she decides -- with Jagger's
support -- to accept an internship at
General Hospital.
Lisa Ann Hadley plays Dr. Julie
Morris-Devlin, a woman who has grown up
on the posh North Shore of Chicago, in
the overpowering shadow of her father, a
nationally renowned surgeon. Julie has
spent her life craving her arrogant and
egotistic father's approval, while
discounting her mother's nurturing love.
She has now arrived at General Hospital
with the intention of keeping her and her
father's identity a secret, to see if she
can get by without his powerful influence
over her life.
Julie Pinson will portray Dr. Eve
Lambert, an intelligent and beautiful
woman whose father left her and her
mother when she was two years old. Her
driving ambition rules her existence
until she meets her match in Port
Charles: a man who makes her reconsider
her opinion of men and experience the
effect of love.
Michael Dietz and Jay Pickett will play
Dr. Joseph Parnell Scanlon and Francis
Xavier Scanlon, respectively. Joe and his
big brother Frank grew up as the eldest
siblings in a poor Irish family in Port
Charles. It was to Frank that Joe first
confided that he wanted to become a
doctor, and Frank encouraged Joe to
pursue his dream. Frank, whose charm has
always outshined his younger brother, now
teaches high school science and
moonlights as an emergency medical
technician. Joe's fiery disposition makes
it difficult for him to show tenderness
to anyone but his patients -- until he
meets the wrong woman to fall in love
with.
Nolan North plays Dr. Chris Ramsey, whose
charm masks his determination to be the
best surgeon in the country. Chris'
father decreed that his son would never
have to work for anything; and as a
result, Chris became thoroughly spoiled.
His smooth exterior allows him to be
adored by General Hospital staffers, but
his self-serving nature and lack of moral
code cause others to loathe him. Chris
will discover a secret about one of his
fellow interns that he will use to
advance himself.
Mitch Longley plays Dr. Matt Harmon, who
uses a wheelchair since being injured in
a skiing accident at eighteen. Matt has
not given up on the idea that he will
walk again someday, has not fully
accepted that his injury may well be
permanent. Matt refuses to allow his
physical disabilities to get in the way
or be an excuse for others to treat him
any differently.
Rib Hillis plays Dr. Jake Marshak, a
brooding man who never quite fit in
during his undergraduate years. He had
very few friends and struggled to find
his place in the world. Just when things
looked darkest, Jake met Danielle Ashley
(Renee Allman), a beautiful, sweet,
actress who seems fascinated with his
secret research. Danielle has recently
uncovered secrets about her lineage that
link her to Port Charles.
Debbi Morgan will play Dr. Ellen Burgess,
the resident in charge of this year's
interns, who is determined to whip this
group into shape. Ellen is an excellent
doctor and demands that others also
excel. Even small failures are
unacceptable to her, and she does not
tolerate excuses. Authoritative and
unsentimental, Ellen is driven by secrets
from her past to make her interns into
the best doctors they can be.
Sounds like quite a line-up. And the
backstage buzz is that this show will be
great-from the primetime launch to the
daily show. I can't wait.
Port Charles Hits Roadblock
If you are anxious to see the debut of
Port Charles, the new GH spinoff, you
might be waiting longer than you think.
The show is set to debut on June 2nd...
but there's a catch. If your local ABC
affiliate has not been airing The City or
A Daytime to Remember, you might not get
to see GH2.
Take this example from KVIA TV 7 out of
El Paso, Texas. Their message is in
response to a message sent by Soap Opera
Central Administrator Dan Kroll.
"Unfortunately we will not be able
to air Port Charles initially. We
have not been running Loving or The
City due to poor ratings in El Paso.
Therefore, we have contracts to air
other programming during the time
period, and we must honor those
agreements. However, when those
contracts expire, we will seriously
consider airing Port Charles".
If this is the situation in your neck of
the woods, it is entirely possible that
you will not get to see Port Charles
until after the show has been on the air
for a while. Unfortunately, there is
little that a viewer can do. If a
station's programming contracts require
it to air another program, the only thing
they might be able to do is to air Port
Charles in the wee morning hours.

GH2 Gets Name, 2 Hour Premiere
ABC's new General Hospital spinoff, Port
Charles, will launch with a two-hour
primetime episode at 9:00pm (Eastern) on
Sunday, June 1st.
"General Hospital" stars Lynn Herring and
Jon Lindstrom and former "GH" star Kin
Shriner have been signed to head the cast
of "Port Charles," the title of the
upcoming new ABC Daytime drama. This
announcement was made by Pat
Fili-Krushel, President, ABC Daytime.
"Lynn and Jon have created dynamic and
complex characters on 'General Hospital'
that have delighted and entertained our
viewers for the past several years. Kin
has been a cornerstone of the 'GH'
storyline for years, and his return
promises exciting, fun and dramatic
possibilities for story," explained Ms.
Fili-Krushel.
Kin Shriner assumed the role of Scotty
Baldwin in 1977 and continued with the
character, off and on, through the early
'90s. He also appeared in the daytime
dramas, "Texas" and "Rituals"; and the
ABC miniseries, "War and Remembrance," to
name a few of his television credits. Mr.
Shriner has also done theatrical and
motion picture projects.
Creating the role of Lucy Coe in 1986,
Lynn Herring took the recurring role of a
mousy librarian and parlayed it into a
character who is alternately alluring,
devious, unpredictable and endearing. Ms.
Herring has been twice nominated for an
Emmy Award for her performance and has
received two Soap Opera Awards as well.
Jon Lindstrom joined "GH" in 1992, also
as a recurring character. The role of
Ryan Chamberlain was augmented into one
of twins -- frighteningly similar as well
as distinctly different. Following Ryan's
fiery demise in 1995, Mr. Lindstrom
continued to portray the surviving
sibling, psychiatrist Kevin Collins, who
is now involved in a bafflingly spirited
relationship with Lucy Coe. Jon appeared
on the daytime drama, "Santa Barbara";
and has numerous television credits,
including the ABC series, "Call to
Glory," and "The Alamo, Thirteen Days to
Glory" with Alec Baldwin.
Wendy Riche is the executive producer of
both "General Hospital" and "Port
Charles," which is set to begin airing
June 2.

Did anyone catch the 2 hour premier of this show last night? I watched
it and was not very impressed with it. The new actors will need some
time to fit into their characters. I think most of them overacted like
crazy throughout the entire 2 hours.
The GH regulars were good as usual but most of their parts were
limited. Debbie Morgan (is that her real name, she was Angie on
AMC and then on The City) was not in the pilot at all.

| 26.4 | Can Port Charles Survive | JULIET::CORDES_JA | Six Tigers on My Couch | Mon Jun 02 1997 14:40 | 60 |
COMMENTARY Can Port Charles Survive? When Loving transformed into The City, ABC hoped that the trendy new soap would attract a larger, younger viewing audience. Their hopes failed. While The City's ratings held at 2.0, the network decided that a new show could do a better job of pulling in the ratings. In January, NBC launched Sunset Beach. The first week of the show garnered decent ratings, but in recent weeks the show has fallen flat and has barely mustered 1.6 rating. The Bold & The Beautiful, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, is the only soap to have made a successful launch in recent years. So why does ABC think that Port Charles can hit the big time? General Hospital has always been a fan favorite. Luke and Laura are possibly the best known soap opera couple. In fact, ABC promotes General Hospital far more than either of its other soaps--All My Children and One Life to Live. But why should this new soap merit so much attention? If you've seen the commercials for PC, the producers are pulling out all the stops. There's good looking men and women and even a gun toting maniac who holds the hospital hostage. The show will initially draw in fans of General Hospital as well as those viewers who watch all of the ABC soaps. But can it lure viewers from other soaps? Probably not. You see, not all ABC stations will be carrying Port Charles. Since The City's ratings were so low, many stations dropped the soap and began filling the time slot with talk shows and other programs. Now those stations have contracts with other programs and they cannot air Port Charles in the time slot specified by ABC. The same thing happened to Sunset Beach. There are also other stations that are waiting to see how Port Charles fares in the ratings before they add the show to their daytime line-up. A top show, like The Young & The Restless (which marks its tenth consecutive year as daytime's #1 drama), is broadcast on all of CBS's affiliates. Therefore it has more exposure and can pull in more viewers. This equates to a higher rating. But if Port Charles isn't going to air on all of ABC's stations, that means less viewers and a lower rating. A low ratings means that the stations who wanted to see if Port Charles can pull in the ratings will opt against carrying the show. Do you see the dilemma? Daytime viewers are particular about their soaps. Change isn't always a good thing. Take the recent recasts on Y&R and AMC. Fans don't like things to stray far from their usual formula. Most of the longer running shows are the ones that dominate the ratings. The newers soaps lack the familiarity of a 20 or 30 year old program. But that's where Port Charles hopes to differ from other soaps. Several regular characters from General Hospital will cross-over to Port Charles (and they don't have far to go since both shows take place in the same city) in the hopes that it will appeal to GH viewers. It sounds like a good idea, but The City was created almost entirely of characters from Loving. There is no doubt that Port Charles will score big in its first week on the air. It wouldn't be surprising if the show placed above shows like Another World and Guiding Light. ABC wisely decided to premiere the soap in a two hour movie, a move that might bring in viewers who usually disregard soap operas. The true test for the new show will come in its second, third, and fourth weeks. If Port Charles can hold its ratings, the show has a good chance of survival. If it can't, we might be seeing a new show called Pine Valley in 1998. | |||||

The interns are being held hostage by Dr.

Frank Scanlon tells Audrey and the chief

the reception, only no one else knows
about it. They all head up to the sixth
floor to find out about it, Frank stops to
tell security something fishy is going on.
Security calls the police when shots are
fired.
While the interns try and reason with
Cooper, Audrey and Dr. Faulk show up and
try to get everyone out. Cooper fires more

Kevin gets Lucy's message and a call from

Security finds Kevin in the hospital
trying to find Lucy, Frank offers to help
Kevin get her out. Lucy climbs out of the
elevator and just as it falls a little
more, she grabs onto a ladder. She calls

Kevin finds her and heads to the main

Cooper.
Cooper reads everyone's files, including
everything about Karen's past as a

At the same time Kevin fixes the elevator.
Tony comes in to help with Audrey, they

Alan has to put Joe Scanlon in front of

Audrey, he promises to fight back, but
until then he can't start his internship.
