44.0. "A Comment About Chatter in the Topics" by POWDML::TARG () Mon Sep 09 1991 13:41

I'm an AMC notes reader. I like the updates when I get a chance
to read them. It took me appox 19 notes to go through before I
actually came to an update. Can we cut down on the hello's to each
other, or get each others nodes and write through the mail.

if you are pressed for time and can only read the updates try doing
dir 14.(whatever the last number you read)-last. This will give you
all the titles and you can select the ones that say update. Please
don't ask us to give up the wonderful repore and friendships this file
    has helped us find.

The "hellos", "how-are-ya's" and side comments are what makes AMC notes file
fun and like one big happy family. Scan the titles for "Update" if you want
to cut out the rest of the stuff. (^%

the notes correctly, you were probably inaware of this so just look for
the notation at the top of the screen. Happy Reading!!

We do not want to encourage *anyone* to compete for the largest number
of replies in any given day. This is one of the things that helped
    bring down the old conference.

i'm a regular reader and i really like reading this.and thank you
guys.and also just in case you care to know, the nbc's days of our lives
is been move an hour earlier[2:00-3:00]same as g.h. and santa barbara
is now 1:00-2:00.as far as i know dools got a higher ratings than g.h.
so more likely having the same time slot will hurt more g.h. ratings.
i watch both of the show so i guess,i just have to keep on switching
    the channel.

    My $.02:

We have, in the past, received complaints of the .0 nature. But, it is
MY opinion, and mine alone, that if this situation really bothers
someone, they have a choice...to read or not to read. As far as I know
this file has never been mandatory. %^)

I personally like the comraderary (sp), friendship, and networking
that goes on in this file. The "regulars" are a great bunch of people
and I for one have gained more system knowledge from the people in this
file than I have at training. I write "off-line" to a lot of people
from this file, but every once in a while I forget to do that and just
do a "blurb" in the file. If this is wrong, I apologize, but...this is
a "fun" file, it has nothing to do with anything.

We laugh together, we cry together, we help each other when someone
needs it. If all that means is that I have to "cruise" thru a few
extra notes, I'll GLADLY take it!

There have been a lot of suggestions on how to avoid have to read each
note for those who chose not to read each one.

Sorry to go on and on.....

44.8A reply that should be read while SMILING!MCIS2::HUSSIANChristmas is only 15 weeks away!!Tue Sep 10 1991 13:3128
    I LOVE YOU, TOO, JACKIE!!!

Heck, I'm gonna say it! This is a DISCUSSION FORUM! It's not a network
for NON VIEWERS to go into & get their daily fix of the soap they
follow. :*) :*) :*) I'm not saying this in a rude tone, I just think
the point should be made. While it is perfectly fine & ENCOURRAGED that
non-viewers get the scoop from those of us fortunate enough to WATCH
the show, it is still a FORUM in which we can go in & discuss the show
that we watch. W/O offending anyone I'd like to point out that this
isn't a SERVICE that is being provided for people who just want the
    facts & nothing else.

I mean, think of how boring this file would be to the people who watch
everyday if we could ONLY update & we couldn't discuss how we feel
about certain things, or even get off the subject of the show from time
to time. We'd be reading things we already know & that wouldn't make
the file very interesting to the daily viewers.

I hope that we can all remain as one bigg happy family & not be
offended by words that may seem harsher than they were intended.
It really makes a difference when you're READING the way someone feels,
as opposed to listening to them speak. The spoken word comes across
much gentler than the written word. I LOVE THE CONTRIBUTORS TO THIS
FILE TOO, AND HOPE EVERYONE CONTINUES to be as friendly, supportive
and creative as you always were!!!

    Love,
    Bonnie

I happen to agree with the original noter. When you only have 10
minutes for a break and want to find out about what really happened
in an update, you can't afford to read through 30 hellos and such.
I think you could be more accomodating to those who don't have the
luxury of sitting around and reading notes all day.

Maybe you could have just an update file and also a "gossip file"
seperately? I don't see how this could hurt anyone...with the state
that the company is in now and the layoffs and such, people are being
watched. I think it would be common curtisy (sp?)...and no hard
    feelings on either side.

    think about it...

44.12Moderator ResponseCAPITN::CORDES_JASet Apt./Cat_Max=3..uh,I mean 4Thu Oct 17 1991 15:3333
We (the moderators) have asked the participants in this file to
make sure they title their notes when they have an update. We
have not asked them to discontinue all chatter. This notefile
is for discussions regarding the soaps on ABC as well as a few
evening soaps with no other home. Participants are free to
*discuss* anything about the soaps as long as they are not bashing
other participants or breaking any Digital policies.

I agree, it sometimes gets hard to find the actual updates or
discussions tucked into some of the chattier notes but we are not
going to ask everyone to cease friendly discussions. If we create
a topic for updates and a topic for gossip I can almost guarantee
you we will have gossip and chatter in both topics.

If you come up on a note that appears to be chatter and you don't
want to read it, just type in the number of the next note in the
topic and read it instead, or type NEXT UNSEEN to go to whatever
    the next unseen note is.

Another alternative is to do a directory of the remaining notes in
that topic and pick out the updates that you want to read. To do this
type the following at the NOTES> prompt.

       		DIR xx.xxxx-xx.* (x's = topic/note numbers)

This will print a list of the remaining replies on your screen and you
should be able to read the titles and pick out the updates to read.

Okay, everyone, remember to title your updates so the folks using this
method to find just the updates will be able to locate them easily.

to .13...no, it isn't mandetory, but like I said, there are people out
there with only ten minute breaks that have to get back to work...why
should they be deprived of the updates because you have to ask dumb
questions about hair and such...there must have been 12 replies about
hayley's hair today...it's a waste of space and time. Have some more
consideration for those that do have to work...I noticed there is a
gossip note now, someone had the curtesy to start...thank you to that
    someone.

I have deleted the Gossip topic from the file. The moderators have
given an explanation for why we will not have a separte gossip topic and
separate update topic. If you have limited time to read notes, then
use the procedures outlined in previous replies to find the replies
notated with the "update" flag. Those noters who do updates, please
continue to flag them by putting update in the title. If the
moderators find an update that does not have update in the title, we
will add that to the title.

The ABC_Soaps conference was designed to be a forum for discussing all
aspects of the ABC_Soaps. We do allow for individual personalities,
and stream-of-consciousness noting. We do not intend to change the
focus or scope of this conference at this time.

Several of the replies in this topic seem to indicate that some of us
have nothing better to do than note. That is not the case. Notes can
be accessed after hours if time is an issue.

44.16We all "have to work"IAMOK::CUDAKThelMon Oct 21 1991 09:546
The people accessing ABC_SOAPS all "have to work". The majority of
time they access this note before work, at breaks, at lunch, and after
work. On occasion, access in made while trying to "clear the head"
during (or after) a particularly busy day.

Let stop these snide comments about "some people having to work"
44.17didn't mean to offend, sorryDNEAST::BAUKS_ROSEFor God so loved the World...Mon Oct 21 1991 14:4213
They are not meant to be snide remarks...I didn't mean to offend
anyone. I, too, have enjoyed this file for a long time, but as I've
mentioned before, some people don't have the luxury to use their breaks
to read notes. They run errands or such...I didn't mean that none of
you work, not by a long shot. Forgive me if I've offended anyone, I
didn't mean to. But most people use their breaks to eat lunch or go
outside for a deserved walk to clear the cobwebs...the few minutes left
over in their breaks are used to find updates. Now that they know how
to do a dir. things will be easier. These notes weren't meant for
bickering. I was just trying to back a fellow noter....it's funny,
though, I received some mail backing me and the other noter.

    I have a comment....

I wish that people who are primarily read only....make that all noters
would refrain from making comments on the frequency someone notes
especially to a noters boss!!!!! If you feel that someone could not
possibly be holding down a job and writing as much as they do, try
talking/writing to that person, BUT DO NOT MAKE A COMMENT TO THAT
PERSONS BOSS SAYING SO AND SO MUST NOT BEING DOING ANY WORK, HE/SHE IS
ALWAYS IN NOTES!!!! Not only is it none of your business, it could be
    damaging to the employee!!!

I think if you look in the "system questions" topic (don't remember the
topic number) in DOOL you'll see the moderator's explanation of why/
what she did with the notes in question. I remember seeing her note
