The ABC_SOAPS NOTES conference is located in Cupertino, California
(UCF) on the WLDWST MI VAXcluster. This conference should be available
24 hours a day unless the VAXcluster is down for maintenance.

Contributors to this conference should follow Digital Equipment
    Corporation's Policies & Procedures book.

    Hi Again,

The introduction note is note number 2. Be sure to go in there and
enter your reply. To reply to the introduction note, go to the note,
and then type "ans" at the notes prompt. That will make your reply one
of the replies in the introductions topic rather than a whole new topic
    by itself.

If you need any help with this, just send me mail and I will be happy
to help out. We also have a topic called "Technical Questions Answered
Here". You can check that one out if you need to know how to do
    something.

To get a listing of the different topics in this file, just type "dir"
at the notes prompt and it will take you to the directory. From there
you can choose whatever note number you wish to read.

    Happy Noting,

    Jo

    Just a reminder.

If you are having a problem with something in the file and would
like a moderator's input/involvement, please send mail and copy
all of us. If you send to only one moderator it could happen that
the person you send to may be busy and won't see the mail right
away. By sending to all 3 of us, you should be covered and get
    a quicker response.

To find out who the moderators are and what their mail addresses
are type SHOW MOD and hit return while you're in the file and a
listing of of moderator usernames and node names will come up on
your screen. When you're done type control Z and the list will
    go away.

change so be sure to do SHOW MOD):

Our system manager has recently commented on how active our file is
and how much space it takes up. In the interest of being allowed to
continue to have this notesfile reside on WLDWST, a cleanup is now in
    process.

Our current system manager is also in the process of changing to a new
job within the same group and I don't know who will be taking over
managing WLDWST. This is another reason to reduce the size of the
file. I don't want the next system manager to have a heart attack
    when he sees this file.

With a little luck and some assistance from the members of this file
in keeping un-soaps related chatter to a minimum, we should be okay.

    Jan

P.S. In case you're wondering, there will be some holes left by the
notes that are being purged. We apologize for any inconvenience
this may cause. However, if you feel the way we do, dealing with
a few holes in the conference numbering is a small price to pay
for being allowed to continue having an ABC_SOAPS notesfile.
1.69Addendum to Cleanup NoteYOSMTE::CORDES_JASet Apt./Cat_Max=3..uh,I mean 4Wed Feb 19 1992 16:3614
Jo Ann and I have discovered just what a huge job we have taken on
by promising to clean up ABC_SOAPS. We're having to delete hundreds
of notes, one note at a time (we haven't been able to find a method
that works to allow us to delete a range of notes yet).

We'd like all of you to help us keep ABC_SOAPS clean by making sure
that when replies are posted that the bulk of the reply is ABC_SOAPS
related. If the discussion begins to evolve into a non-ABC_SOAPS
related discussion, please take it off-line to your mail account.
SEND/AUTHOR is still an excellent way to reply to a note directly to
    the poster's mail account.

As a moderator of other conferences it might be wise to archive this
version and start another one, since it basicly goes day by day.

I would strongly support this for this type of conference.

If the moderators want to contact me for advice (I've been moderating
for well over seven years) they are welcome to.

At least one of the moderators here has had recent experience with
archiving a file so I think we'll be okay if we decide to go that
    route.

    Jackie,

Thanks for the offer. The mods have discussed it and we don't feel
that archiving is the best way to go with this file. Since we're
doing daily updates and chattering for the most part, it seems like
wasted disk space to store this. This would mean we would have this
big old bulky file stored somewhere and we'd just be growing another
big old bulky file in addition to it.

We will be leaving the history topics in tact so people can still
reference stuff and we will be reducing the number of replies in the
other topics significantly (for example AMC has over 7000 replies so
we may delete the oldest 3-4000 replies).

Shows that are no longer on the air have been removed from the file.

So far our system manager says he has seen a 10% reduction in file
size and we haven't even tackled the bulk of the stuff we were planning
    to delete.

I certainly appreciate all the offers of help I've received. You guys
are great! Right now, I think the main thing to do is to try to stick
to the main topics. Chatter is still okay but the bulk of the note
should be about the topic/soap at hand.

Thanks again, everyone, for all your support.

Well, I don't have any definite information on when and where yet
but I thought I'd give you all some advanced warning...

ABC_SOAPS will be moving off of node WLDWST very soon. Probably this
week (Friday). WLDWST is located in Cupertino, CA and that site is
schedule to close in June. WLDWST will be shutting down on June 1st.

When the time comes everyone will need to modify the ABC_SOAPS entry
    in their notes directory.

    The command will be:

    	Modify entry ABC_SOAPS/file=newnode::ABC_SOAPS

(newnode will be defined very soon)

I'll give you more information as soon as our system manager tells me
where our new home will be.

Okay, this is the word on the ABC_SOAPS move. On Friday 5/22
afternoon the system manager and I will shut ABC_SOAPS down (this
is Friday afternoon Calif. time so most of you East Coasters will
    already be starting your weekend).

When ABC_SOAPS comes up again it will be located on node MISERY.
This may not be its final home but I'll let you know if/when there
    is another change.

Before you log in to ABC_SOAPS this weekend or on Monday morning
you must remember to type the following:

    	modify entry ABC_SOAPS/file=MISERY::ABC_SOAPS

For the person who asked if there were time contraints placed on
this file since it moved, the answer is NO.

This file is located on a machine in Santa Clara, California. We are
3 hours behind the east coast folks. If there is a problem with the
file, we don't always know about it until we get in here and start
working. I start at 9:00am California time, which is noon east coast
time. That means you guys have had several hours to be frustrated with
a problem I'm just discovering. Please bear with me, I'll do my best
to get things fixed as quickly as possible. And, you can be sure that
Cheryl is trying her best to work the issue until the rest of us get here.

Here's the scoop I got from Jan on the System problem. Hang in there,
    they're working the problem.
    _______________________________________________________________________

Node MISERY has a system disk problem. I imagine that even if
people are able to log in to ABC_SOAPS, they'll want to get out
as soon as possible 'cause the stuff that is up on MISERY is
running in slo' mo' (translation: slow motion).

Well, I got a little note on my desk this afternoon telling me
that ABC_SOAPS needs to lose some weight, actually LOTS of weight.
We're at 70,000 blocks. I called a system manager of another
local conference that is pretty active and he tells me they're
at 16,000 blocks. So, I'll be doing some cleanup again.

You shouldn't really notice a difference. The notes I'll be
cleaning up will be the older replies in the main topics and
some of the topics we're not using too much. Also, I'll be
deleting some of the "personal dating" things that are past now.
The current stuff will remain and I won't touch the "history"
    topics.

It is really important that we take extra care with ABC_SOAPS
now as it has been moved to a system that is a lot more visible.
I want to be sure to do all the things the system manager requests
so that we can keep this file going.

1.87How can we help?IAMOK::CUDAKThelFri Jun 12 1992 06:466
Jan, Sounds like you have a lot of work ahead of you, GOOD LUCK.
Just a thought, but perhaps older notes should be cleaned out, say,
once a quarter, including updates. Also, we noters have got to help
out by discontinuing entry of some of the very short banter-type
replies (I'm as guilty of this as anyone else). Let us know what we
can do, if anything, to keep our beloved notesfile under control.
1.88One way to helpJULIET::CORDES_JAFour Tigers on My CouchFri Jun 12 1992 18:5317
One more thing that has been brought to my attention:

The system manager has noted that there are people connected to
this file for hours at a time or for the entire day. Please DO NOT
log in to ABC_SOAPS and stay logged in for the day. This does put
an added strain on our resources and it makes us much more visible
to those who would prefer not to have notesfiles on this node.

Please be aware that the node we now reside on has never allowed
notesfiles in the past. I'd like to be sure we follow all the rules
and guidelines presented to us so we don't give them a reason to
reconsider their decision to allow us to move to this location.

Thanks to everyone in here for your understanding.

Just want everyone to know that this file will continue no matter
how quiet it gets. I'm sure the current business climate has a
lot to do with why we're so quite. I'm not at liberty to discuss
where everyone has gone publicly, but if you send me mail I'll
answer the question. If I get a lot of mail, I'll have to start
sending out a "canned" reply so please don't be upset if it is

    to anyone.

In the mean time, I'd like to encourage all the normally silent/closet

Just a quick note here. I want to thank everyone who has been
updating and filling in the upcoming news. It doesn't seem
like that many people are in here but rest assured there are
bunches of people out there that really appreciate it, they're
just silent noters. I had no idea we had so many people still
with us until I got mail from almost all of them.

Just a quick reminder to our new update posters. If you are
posting a "same day" update, please remember to add a spoiler
before the text. You do this by typing CONTROL L.

And, at the risk or repeating myself for the umpteenth time.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for updating.

to the proper topic). This file could use some life.

What! No new notes. Is anybody still out there. Have you all
flown the coop and left me here alone? I never thought I'd see
the day when I'd be begging for chatter (since the system manager
was strict about file size in the beginning) but, here I am begging
    for some activity.

    Chat on dudes and dudettes,

I will be on vacation from 5/16 through 5/25 (back on 5/26),
not that you guys have needed me much lately. Don't go nuts
    while I'm gone. :^)

I will be on vacation (in the DC area) from 6/29 through 7/5
(back on 7/6). Keep those wonderful updates coming while I'm
gone. I'll need to catch up on everything.

I'll probably be wishing I was back in Calif. before the vacation
is over given the sweltering temps and humidity in DC. I'm such
a weather wimp after 21 years in Calif.

Just a quick note. I heard on the news today that the networks
will be resuming soap schedules after the glut of O.J. Simpson
coverage has died down. They say they'll play all the episodes
    in order.

Can't wait. Hope it happens very soon.

Just wondering if there's a problem with the notesfile or if
everyone is just especially quiet this week. Is anyone still
hanging around in this notesfile or do I have a system issue
and no one can see this? Waiting patiently to see if I'm the
    only one here.

I'm here also. I've been wondering why it has been so quiet. I
usually just read the conference (I look forward to the updates).
    hope everyone starts again.

I'm happy to see you guys are still here. I thought my machine
was acting up since they changed the hardware. I attempted to
pull a few updates off the web but other day but my web brouser
crashed in the middle of it so I gave up.

I tried to update City, AMC, GH and OLTL today via the TV Guide
updates and I was a little surprised (and a little annoyed) to
find out that they haven't updated their information. They're
still on last week's updates. This is so odd. Usually they
have the update in on the same day. Will need to figure out
what's going on here. I've become dependent on them for my
    daily blurb about each show.

Jan (hoping someone, somewhere has an update) :^)
