You'll find a ton of BB stuff over in the RECORDS conference (some
real die-hard fans). I have the Endless Summer double lp and am
convinced that they're all re-recordings of the originals done around
1970-71 (release date was sometime in '72).
The BB's have a "greatest hits" compilation disc out, which title
escapes me now, but it has all the "original" tracks, remastered
and remixed for CD. It's very good. It's release date was in '88,
so it shouldn't be too hard to find. It also comes as part of a
boxed set of 4 BB cd's that I've seen around. Unfortunately, it
repeats the "hits" on the other 3 discs in the set.
Like the with the Beatles, good old EMI America/Capitol continues
to stick the knife in and twist it ever so slightly, issuing repeats
of the same material, over & over again, with no definitive
compilations of any artists career available. It didn't used to
be such a sleaze-bag organization, until EMI bought it. Jolly stupid,
these Americans, say wot ??

| Beach Boy compilations available on CD include:
Spirit of America
Endless Summer
both released in the early '70s
Made in the USA
released in '88
There is some duplication of material in the three releases. The
Made in the USA disk is the only one that contains any material
from Pet Sounds. None of the three disks contain anything from
Smiley Smile on.
The first two (Spirit of America and Endless Summer) were released
by Capitol in retaliation when the Beach Boys left that label
for Warner/Reprise/Brother. The result was one of the biggest
selling Beach Boy LPs of all time.

re .2 Yo, Ken, you're the BB fanatic I was thinking of when I headed
.0 in the direction of the Records conference. What do you think
about my assumption that "Endless Summer" is all re-recordings,
rather than original sessions ?? I've matched the tracks that are
alike on that one and "Made in the USA" (which are the original
sessions) and they do sound different to me. Your thoughts, please??

| As far as the "Endless Summer" CD being re-recordings, the copy
I have has a statement about the CD begin made from the original
masters with no remixing, by way of accounting for variances in
mono/stereo, dynamics, etc. (And sure enough, there is a patchwork
quality to it.) I will check against "Made in the USA" when I get
a chance.
A couple of things I like about "Made..." -- it's got the album version
of "Help Me Rhonda" (can't stand the "single mix" on "Summer"). And
it's got the obvious selections from "Pet Sounds" (Wouldn't/God Only
Knows/Caroline No/...).
The Beach Boys tape I assembled for car listening is assembled from
the 3 CDs mentioned -- one way of saying that no single one really
gets it done.

| Endless Summer was released in '74; Spirit of America was released
in '75. The Beach Boys had signed with Warners in '70. Capitol
had been repackaging Beach Boys material for years and then removing
the original LPs from distribution making most of the early Capitol
releases collectors items. So, as far as re-recordings of original
material the prospect seems highly unlikely since Brian was trying
to keep pace with the rest of the world rather than relying on
the past.
Often on the early recordings the masters were spead up for what
reason I'm not really sure; I think to make Brian's voice sound
even higher. So one difference might be that alone. On Surfer
Girl, for example, there does seem to be a noticeable tempo variation
between Endless... and Made... even though the arrangement is
identical.
Help Me Rhonda was originally released on the Beach Boys Today LP
with the rather odd ending (fading in and out) and the harmonica
(Brian was high on acid at the time of this session; around '64).
The single version was included on Summer Days/Summer Nights
eliminating both the harmonica and the 'fades'. Summer Days/Summer
Nights has been released on CD as California Girls and is missing
the track I'm Bugged At My Old Man.
The obscure CDs of early Beach Boy Material are probably when the
Beach Boys were still with Candix. These releases appear to have
come from overseas sources that have access to these Candix masters.

| Two of the Candix recordings ("Surfin' Safari" and "Surfer Girl")
can be found on the "Beach Classics" CD from Dunhill. The recordings on
this are by various artists (includes "New York's a Lonely Town"
by The Tradewinds, a favorite of mine), and were remastered from
original tapes.
For completeness, there is also the 1985 "Beach Boys" on CD (I have
it on LP).

In 1964 I formed a folk quartet named "The Tradewinds". We worked
regularly in coffee houses in the Village and were reasonably popular.
When "New York Is A Lonely Town' came out, we valiantly attempted
to continue to use our original name, but hostile surfer groupies
kept showing up at our gigs, making for an uncomfortable situation.
We changed our name to "The Hangmen", our formerly loyal audience
disappeared, and I soon left to form a jazz group.
I've hated that record ever since. What a great name to lose to
a one-hit group.

| Warners is sitting on four releases that I would love to have on
CD: Holland, Surf's Up, Sunflower and Carl and the Passions. The
relationship between Warners and the Beach Boys was as stormy as
the relationship with Capitol, if not stormier.
Warners is definately working their own agenda for most of their
catalogue so it's hard to say where Holland fits into the schedule.
