1508.0. "The Nylons" by BOOKIE::EPPES (Of a fictitious nature) Fri Feb 03 1989 17:01

After I entered 1505.11, I did a DIR/TITLE, and, to my surprise, did
not come up with anything on The Nylons! So here's some info culled
    from the VIDEO::DECAROLERS conference.

Note 6.0 The Nylons !!! 4 replies

I've been waiting to share a recent discovery with other singers.
How nice of David to setup this conference so that I can tell all
of you (except Jo Anne) at the same time:

    	The NYLONS !!! (emphasis added)

The group is a Canadian quartet that sings with minimal accompaniment,
usually just bass and drums (machines?). Some (most?) of their
recordings are overdubbed. The resulting sound is amazing, true
testimony to the potential of voices as musical instruments.

Their music is a combination of 50's and 60's songs (Up on the Roof,
The Lion Sleeps Tonight, This Boy, Silhouettes on the Shade) and
    new compositions (by the group).

They have two recording on the Open Air label, a division of Windham
    Hill:

    	One Size Fits All
    	Seamless

Both are available on CD. I assume LP format is also available.

And my vote: Don't miss this group! The stuff is great; not a
bit overstated in .0. By the way, they now have a third album out.
I forgot the name, but I just got the two listed in .0 and listened
to them all weekend! This stuff is great!

The third Nylons album is "Happy Together." It was the first one
I got, and is my favorite out of the three (though I really like 'em all!).
I can hardly wait for another one. Sure wish they'd come do a concert
    around here! (Southern NH/Eastern Mass)

They did do a concert in Boston last August, I believe. I didn't make
it but I know people who did - they said it was great! I've been
a fan ever since I was "introduced" to them 2 years ago!

I've just got one of their albums (just haven't gotten around
to getting their others) and like it a lot. Their cover of
"The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is nothing short of amazing.

The Nylons also sing the theme to the syndicated sitcom "Throb",
and have made appearances on the show.

They also did the Twix commercial for a while, before the Yello
version of "Oh Yeah was used" I enjoy them too.

The Nylons actually have released four LP/CDs. The first was
titled simply The Nylons. It also contains a version of
The Lion Sleeps Tonight. It's not quite as good as the second
pass, however. This release also contains a lot more cover
tunes than the subsequent releases such as Love Potion #9,
Rock and Roll Lullaby and, I believe, another version of Up
On the Roof. I'll check it out tonight for titles and label.

The four singers were actors who would harmonize between acting
gigs or scenes. From this modest beginning the desire grew
to make it a full time occupation as the sound became tighter.
They stage their own shows and their shows are as exciting as
the recordings themselves. Even more so!

The first Nylons release is on Attic records.

It also includes a version of Duke of Earl.
