1501.0. "Magnavox CD2000" by VEEJAY::ECTOR (C'mon baseball season !!) Mon Jan 30 1989 16:49

No new notes on Maggies yet this year, so I'll get one started.
After 5 years good service from my 2041 (originally purchased for
$129.00), with minimal problems (occasional "drawer" problems and
on occasion, rejection of a disk, attributed to inability to error
correct), I was taping the other day and really smacked the drawer
while it was in the out position. It never did recover and I'm not
real electro-mechanical minded, so I chalked it up as a bad experience
and set out to buy a new CD player.

I looked at dozens and settled on the CDP560, which was sale-priced
at $217.00. I got it home, set it up, played one track and something
went "pop" inside. It would load after that, and even spin the disk
up, but immediately "errored." So I took the darn thing back, thinking
I'll just get another. Turns out, it was the last one the store
had in stock (calls to 4 other outlets turned up none). So I got
my money back and returned to shopping around. I found another store
that had one - but it was their "display" model and they wouldn't
sell it. Their salesguy looked throughout the store and brought
over another Maggie and asked me to check it out.

I unboxed it and set it up. It had ALL the features of the 560,
including "shuffle" play and a very small, basic remote. It's a
16-bit machine and like usual, programs 20 tracks. The drawer
is more solid than that of the 1040 or 2040 series and it takes
3" discs with no adaptor. The surprise was the price - $144 !! Needless
to say, I took it and have been playing the heck out of it since
last Wednesday. I couldn't get a straight story out of the saleguy
about the numbering series, whether it is old, new or discontinued,
    but it's a CD2000 - totally different from either the Phillips/Magnavox
    usual numbering system.

Maggie has a 6 disc player out, too - which runs around $225 on sale.
I passed on this model (didn't like the way it looked either - it
    has a orange LED face).

I recommend this CD2000, though, if you can even find it. It was
the only one I'd seen in 5 stores, and it wasn't even on display.
Can't beat it for the price - and having the remote is really nice,
although, now I have 5 remotes to deal with (TV, Cable, Receiver/Amp,
Cassette deck and now CD player - sheesh!!) One thing that's missing
from my old 2041 is the "cheap" look to the front of that unit compared
    to this one.
