1490.0. "JMT Jazz Sampler---Free!!!" by AQUA::ROST (Jazz isn't dead, it just smells funny) Mon Jan 23 1989 09:18

I got a free CD Saturday from JMT, a PolyGram label out of Germany.
The free offer was in MUSICIAN magazine, January 1989 issue. Maybe
this will be the start of a pleasant trend to sample stuff from
new albums without laying out hard cash.

The CD has one track apiece from four new JMT albums, it runs about
    20 minutes.

    The tracks:

    Robin Eubanks

The trombonist from Dave Holland's quintet, with brother Kevin guesting
on guitar. The tune is a Stevie Wonder piece, it is kind of glossy
but has some tasty bone playing. Terri Lynne Carrington on drums.

    Cassandra Wilson

She does "Sweet Lorraine" in a very straight ahead rendition (some
of her other stuff I've heard on radio is a little more "out").
Mulgrew Miller, Lonnie Plaxico and Terri Lynne Carrington are
    the trio backing her.

    Paul Motian

This is from an all-Monk album. This track is "Ugly Beauty" with
Motian accompanied by Bill Frisell on space guitar and a tenor player
whose name I forget. Very nice modernistic approach.

    Greg Osby

This is a weird one. Osby plays "sax" (sounds like alto) and does
some wordless vocalizing. Electronic but not pop. Lonnie Plaxico
is on this one also. I'm not sure if I like this one or not yet.

Anyway, while JMT has a rep for "new" music, this sampler is
well-heeled so as to not scare anybody away. For free, it's a nice
deal. I'm probably going to go out and buy Cassandra's and Paul's
    albums based on this.

If anyone wants a xeroxed order blank, send mail ASAP.
