1487.0. "Sony D-2" by SCOMAN::PHILLIPS (Music of the spheres.) Thu Jan 19 1989 14:09

I recently purchased a Sony D-2 portable at Lechmere's (on sale
for $149.90. Here's a brief rundown of what it does:

    Size: 5.5" x 6" x 1.6" Weight: 1.2 lbs with batteries
    Power: 4 AA alkaline
Included accessories: AC adapter, line patch cord, shoulder strap
    Optional accessories: Remote control, headphones

    Features:
Shuffle play - Repeat modes: 1,all,or shuffle - line out jack -
plays CD3s without adapter - lock switches on controls and door

As far as I can tell, this is basically a D-4 modified to take
conventional batteries - something of a bonus in light of some
people's problems with nicads. The instructions say you can get
about six hours out of a single set of alkalines.

As for sound: it's a Sony - say no more! I am very pleased with
    this unit!!

Actually, the main difference between the D-2 and the D-4 is the
D-2 has no internal rechargeable battery, whereas the D-4 does.
The D-4 can be used with an external (optional) battery (alkaline,
    ni-cad,etc.) pack.

Are you sure the D-2 can do shuffle-play and repeat? The D-2 I saw
a few weeks ago only had 2 buttons on it's front panel. The left
one was for track/time remaining display, and the right one was
for changing the forward/reverse search mode.

1487.2More D-2 ????PH4VAX::WOODLEYFri Jan 20 1989 07:3116
Can you tell me a few more things about the D-2 as I'm considering
    one myself. Specificly:

    1. Does it have a backlit display for use at night?

    2. Does it have tracking recovery? Which means when you hit a bump,
it is smart enough to start playing where it left off.

    3. Does it have RMS and how many program locations? 16, 18, 22?

    4. Does it have AMS? This is the ability to scan through songs at
    double speed with audio.

   Thanks,
    Craig

I can tell you that I thoroughly enjoy the one I have. It does
indeed repeat, shuffle or play once. I've never bumped mine
significantly but it seems to play from where it left off.

It has AMS, which is the opposite of what you said in .-1. As
the instruction book explained (and as my memory serves), AMS is
"Automatic Music Sensor" which means it finds gaps. That's the
default, so when you hit << or >> (REV or FF) it will skip to the
	next or previous song.

It also has a SEARCH mode which will enable you to scan through
a song at high speed, forwards or backwards, with audio. It's quite
a bit faster than double speed ... I timed it and it seems to be
	10-1.

It has a "HOLD" button which means all of the buttons are inoperative.
It has an LCD display, but no light to see it at night. It takes
4 AA batteries, and has an indicater as to when the batteries are
	getting low.

It has a line out and a phones jack. Comes with a carrying strap,
but no case. There's no hookups to use a battery pack.

All in all, a real nice unit.

1487.4Discman?BTO::MYERS_PFri Jan 20 1989 10:237
Is this also known as a "Discman"? The cover of the player had
Discman written on it and the price tag said D-2.

    Thanks.

    re: .4

I believe that most, if not all, the Sony portables say 'Discman'
    on them. My D-4 does.

    re: .3

You don't need a seperate provision for an external battery pack.
The same jack used for the AC adaptor can be used by an external
battery pack. At least that's the way it works on the D-4.

    Re. .2

For question 2: The D-2 seems pretty smart - I tried thumping it
a few times, and got silence for a second, then it picked up about
where it was interrrupted. Good enough for me.

    Re. .3

Thanks for answering the questions for me - I'm glad somebody else
likes the D-2 as well as me!

1487.7One for the road!LUDWIG::PHILLIPSMusic of the spheres.Mon Feb 06 1989 13:5312
...a further report on the D-2's roadability...

I've used the D-2 as an outboard unit in my '84 Dodge Aries, driving
around many of Worcester's back streets. I don't have the Sony
mounting bracket, just have the unit sitting on the front seat.
Thus far (after a few hour's driving) I've only hit one bump severe
enough to cause it to mistrack - and that same bump shook the hell
out of me! The D-2 is apparently quite stable for local driving
    - it should be a breeze for the highway!
