| And I have recently read that there is a new Hammil/Banton
collaboration. I take it that the First/Second Edition albums are the
retrospective? I have that as originally released on Charisma. (I
always thought that Charisma's mad hatter at the teaparty logo was
appropriate!)
I want "H to He, who am the only one" on CD.
It sounds like Virgin is expanding their operations. I recently read
on Usenet that they will be distributing EG, and Editions EG in the US.
This is good news, because the previous distributor (JEM) is out of
business.

Re: .1
Maybe the Crimson CDs will come down in price, then.

Kind of off the subject, but can anyone tell me what the quality
of sound is on the King Crimson and VDGG CDs. I've heard that the
sound quality on the King Crimson CDs is not very good. Is this
true?

I have an EG copy of the first Crimson album. There is also a Polydor
version which I have not heard. The EG disk is quite hissy, and
some rumble distortion is audible on "Moonchild". I assume that
they used the same master as for the "audiophile" vinyl that EG
issued in the early 80s.
It still is cleaner than the Atlantic LP but I was surprised at how
raw it sounded, particularly in comparison to some Beatle CDs and
jazz recordings of the 1950s which sound very clean and hiss-free.
I still plan to buy more Crimson CDs but actually the news that
Virgin will take over EG makes me want to wait, perhaps they will
do new masters.

1463.6 | Polydor "Crimson King" is no better | OWSLEY::ABBOT | Gypsy of a strange and distant time | Wed Jan 11 1989 09:33 | 11 |
| I have the Polydor version of the first Crimson album, and it too is
hissy. I haven't noticed the distortion in "Moonchild", and I've
certainly listened to it enough times since 1984.
I was hoping they found a better master for the EG version. Maybe Virgin
will clean it up, unless the master is that bad.
I was wondering what happened to Jem. Just as they started reissuing
the old Eno albums.

| My Polydor is fine, but then again, comparing it to an orginal album
I've had for about 15 years or longer, anything sounds good.

1463.8 | More varient Crimson discs, New VDGG title. | DDIF::EIRIKUR | Hallgrmsson, CDA Product Manager | Wed Jan 11 1989 14:54 | 17 |
| I've got the Warner (same as Polydor?) edition of "In the Court..."
The major thing that I notice is how compressed everything is, drums
especially. I was hoping that the EG versions were better. You've got
to remember that this stuff was recorded in 1968-9 on what was probably
not state-of-the-art equipment at that time. Still, I would be very
interested in remastered versions.
I second the opinion of the good sound on the VDGG compilation.
There is a strange, strange "new" VDGG called "Now and Then." On some
little label in the UK. It consists of "found" material from 1970-era
sessions at a small studio, with some tracks overdubbed at a reunion
session especially for this album. If only the liner notes didn't seem
to reflect material (changed titles?) that isn't on the CD!!!
