The other night on the Arts & Entertainment cable channel I saw a 2-hr
film about Sting's new group (1985) where they rehearsed and opened in
Paris. The film was called "Bring on the Night". Most of the songs
they played are on the album "The Dream of the Blue Turtle". His band
has Brandon Marsalis playing sax, and some other big-name jazz
musicians that I'm not familiar with (drummer from Weather Report??).

I really enjoyed their jazz-style songs with the added vocals. Brandon
Marsalis was great on the sax.

Could you accomplished jazz listeners recommend any other jazz
artists/groups that are along the same musical style (ignoring vocals)?
I haven't listened to any real jazz except John Klemmer and Tom Scott
(a true neophyte!), and would appreciate any recommendations so I can
    build up my CD library.

    Regards,

	Al

1460.1Sting's own jazzy labelMQOFS::LEDOUXReserved for Future UseWed Jan 04 1989 13:1621
I don't remember seing someone talking about the new label
that STING started. It is jazzy and all musicians are
hand picked by Sting. They have a sampler out and it shows
all the style that Sting likes. He even made a classical
CD on Stravinsky's "L'histoire du soldat" narated by him
and Vanessa Redgrave (Not sure about Vanessa) that is part
    of the sampler.

The Label name is: PANGA (or PANGAEA if your term/ is 7 bits)
The sampler is : Creative Anarchy

Beware, the sampler is realy a sampler and is a very big mix
of cuts not related to each other.

There are some cuts I realy like but some others I realy hate.
(the whole purpose of a sampler)

I saw Sting's tour last summer and loved the band he
had put together. If you liked his Blue turtle CD, then
I would definitely recommend his last one. The name
escapes me right now, but I love it. It is more mellow
than some of his earlier stuff, but I don't think there
is a bad track on it.

After hearing Marsalis play with him live, I went out and
bought his most recent cd, Random Abstract, but was diappointed.
It was not a similar style to what he played with Sting. It
was good, just not what I was hoping for.

I enjoyed the Police, but I think Sting's latest stuff is much
    better.

If you have any luck finding similar work, post it here.
