I thought I'd start a new note on Syd Barrett, since there isn't one, and note 1417 is really about Pink Floyd's new live album. After reading about Syd's new release (but apparently old recordings), called Opal, I zipped over to Silver Platters to see if they had it. They didn't, but what surprised me was that they had "Barrett" and also an empty section for "The Madcap Laughs". I hadn't realized they had been released on CD. They're imports to the USA (from the UK of course). I couldn't resist, so I bought "Barrett". I haven't listened to it yet, so I can't judge the quality, but I already know I like the music, cos I have a cassette recording of it. Some interesting snippets of information about "Barrett", gleaned from the booklet : Produced by David Gilmour & Richard Wright. Richard Wright plays organ, piano and harmonium (no big surprise since he's considered a keyboard player). David Gilmour plays a whole variety of instruments on this album (on various tracks) : 12-string guitar Drums 2nd organ bass guitar and even "all instruments except lead guitar" on 1 track. I can't wait to get it home and listen to it. Mike

Here's the scoop. I just picked up the "new" Syd Barrett CD last night at Rockit Records in Nashua. British import on EMI/Harvest, $16.99. It's called "Opel" and has the following cuts: Opel Clowns & Jugglers (Octopus) Rats Golden Hair (vocal version) (words by James Joyce) Dolly Rocker Word Song Wined and Dined Swan Lee (Silas Lang) Birdie Hop Let's Split Lanky (Part 1) Wouldn't You Miss Me (Dark Globe) Milky Way Golden Hair (instrumental) Basically, this isn't the great lost Syd album. It's demos, alternate takes, and unoverdubbed versions made during the sessions for "The Madcap Laughs" and "Barrett", about 20 years ago. Nothing on this album has been on the other 2 albums in this form. The liner notes are excellent, giving the recording dates, take numbers, etc. I haven't listened to it all the way through yet, but the sound is excellent, and basically it sounds like his other albums, and early Pink Floyd.
