1420.0. "Walsh,Zepplin,and Stones." by RAVEN1::ROSENBERG (won't get fooled again) Tue Dec 06 1988 17:53

      I have just installed a beautiful new Alpine stereo in my 72 Monte
    Carlo. But before I had it put in I recorded 10 cassettes (XL II's).
    I personaly do not own a home stereo system but do own about 300
    or so albums. Anyway for my new system I thought I would us a friend
    of mines home system and his vast CD collection. I will have to
    admit that many of the CD recorded in Dolby C sound great!!! But
    there were three that were not even tolerable(sp?).

       Joe Walsh: The smoker you drink the player you get. MCA
    This is one of my all time favorite albums, but this CD is not worth
    giving away. It sounds like most of the music is missing. And the
    hiss makes it even worse. Do not buy this CD. It is rotten!!

       Rolling Stones: Let it bleed (not sure of label)
    Another classic album that has an extream amount of hiss. The hiss
    was so bad that we did a CD to album test and I will re-recorde
    this tape from the album.

       Led Zepplin: Physical Graphitti(sp?) (not sure of label)
    This classic is just like the stones, too much hiss.

      I will find the label of these CD's and put them into a reply
    of this note. But I still can't believe that the CD companys would
    put crap that sounds like this on the market. I told my friend that
    if I was him I would try to get my money back.

    Rolling Stones ...

    I've been waiting for a new compilation of Stones 60s/early 70s
    hits.
    I say new because there is no way I'm going to pay 11.99 pounds
    for 12 60s tracks - good though they may be.

    DECCA are the UK record label, and they seem to be content to shove
    out the original albums, don't know about quality.

1420.2I had the same LZ problemCANDY::CASTIGLIONEHeavy Metal ThunderWed Dec 07 1988 05:2612
    I have the Physical Graffiti also, and found that I had to put
    my high end filter switches on and cut down on the equalizer to
    knock out the hiss. Still, much better than my old million time
    played album with all the scratches. It scares me playing the albums
    on my turntable, get a big pop, and worry about if I just trashed
    another $80 replacement stylus.
    Still, I find it a good way to replenish my collection by buying
    CD's of the older albums. You get a fairly good deal on them too.
    The club I belong to offers most of the old stuff at $7.99/disc.
    So I've been bust replacing them, hiss or not.

1420.3Maybe cotton in my ears????RAVEN1::ROSENBERGwon't get fooled againWed Dec 07 1988 11:164
      Thanks, I hadn't thought of using a high filter. However I do
    not have access to an equalizer. I guess that I am forced to listen
    to almost intolerable hiss. It makes me think that I'll wait a while
    before I invest in a home system.
1420.4I didn't think it was bad.....HAZEL::STARRLike a fool, fell in love with you...Wed Dec 07 1988 13:066
This is intersting - I have a copy of 'Physical Grafitti' and I hadn't
noticed an overabundance of hiss on it. Although there is some, I
don't think that it is enough to distract from the listening experience.
Maybe my ears just aren't as discerning.....

1420.5Stay away from ABKCO, get the importsOWSLEY::ABBOTDropping circle stones on a sundialWed Dec 07 1988 15:2223
My experience with Stones CDs is to stay away from the American-made
ABKCO label. Most of these are made using the U.S. copies of the tapes.
If you can, get the British imports on Decca or London. They use what
I think are the original tapes, and on a few occasions have remastered
the original sessions to give us stereo versions of what used to be
mono. You'll also get more songs on the British albums.

Check out Hot Rocks. The British version has beautiful stereo versions
of many songs that had never been in stereo before - "Satisfaction",
"Mother's Little Helper", "Time Is On My Side", "Get Off My Cloud".
There's actually piano and rhythm guitar on "Satisfaction", but you'd
never know it from the mono version. The ABKCO version of Hot Rocks
uses the single (= mono) mixes of the songs.

They claim these are "digitally remastered", which I'll believe for the
British versions, but seriously doubt for the American versions.

Joe Walsh - I don't have the problem on my CD. I have a 2-on-1 version
of "The Smoker You Drink..." and "You Can't Argue With A Sick Mind"
(love his titles) and it sounds fine. They must have screwed up when
they made the budget line reissue.

1420.6Still better than the old wayCANDY::CASTIGLIONEHeavy Metal ThunderThu Dec 08 1988 07:3410
    I find this not too bad either, It's just noticeable after you play
    a DDD then go to the old stuff. I haven't bought any of the Stones
    stuff yet since my favorite songs, mostly from the "Paint It Black"
    album, was recorded on a 4 track system. I don't believe they can
    remaster it enough to even make a decent CD. But who knows, maybe
    someday they'll find a way.
    But regardless, they still beat all the old vinyl I collected over
    the years.

         Heeeeyyy Abbot,is the 2on1 cd you have MCA or some other company.
    I'd really like to have a good sounding version of THE SMOKER YOU
    DRINK THE PLAYER YOU GET. I've listened to that album for years.
           Tell me if the label is the same
                       thanks

1420.8Good luck - 2-on-1 is out-o-printOWSLEY::ABBOTDropping circle stones on a sundialFri Dec 09 1988 09:1311
Yes, I have it on MCA. I got it 2 or 3 years ago, before MCA discontinued
the line in favor of their cheapo budget line. I forget who did the
remastering, but he's one of the big names in the field.

If you're lucky some store still might have it in stock, or you can
find it in the used cd section.

Is $10.99 per cd cheaper than 2 on 1 for $14.99?

1420.9Elton John is worse...SCUBBA::KARRFALTDying, dying, dying,....cough!Fri Dec 09 1988 12:5111
    	I have Physical Graffiti and while it is not the best sounding
    CD that I've heard, it's certainly not the worst. Try the Elton
    John CD (his first) on for size. It S****! There is more tape hiss
    on that then on a Realistic Concertape! (and that's pretty bad).
    The only other Elton John that I have is the "Live in Austrailia"
    and that one is a DDD (digital recording). It obviously sounds
    great. Too bad everyting can't be DDD.

    	The label is MCA, the same ones who do Steely Dan. They are
    very inconsistent with their product. Steely Dan sounds great!

    I agree. But then Steely Dan, being a studio band, always used
    pretty decent, if not the best available, recording equipment, and
    were very particular about the whole recording process. In general,
    MCAs CDs sound quite good, in sharp contradiction to the quality
    of many of their LPs.

     Is $10.99 per cd cheaper than 2 on 1 for $14.99?

    That depends. In one case, I'd like to replace one of my Motown
    twofers for two single discs. The Rare Earth twofer (GET READY //
    ECOLOGY) had to use the short (single) version of "I'm Know I'm
    Losing You" in order to fit the two albums onto one disc. They've
    since released GET READY as a single disc, but not ECOLOGY. Once
    they release the latter, I'd rather have the two full albums
    separately than the shortened twofer.
