1417.0. "Pink Floyd Live Album" by HPSTEK::WOOD () Fri Dec 02 1988 09:39

Does anybody out there have it yet? I picked it up this week.
The CD is digitally recorded, so of course the sound is flawless.
The first CD contains one older PF cut, "Shine on You Crazy Diamond",
and the rest are from "Momentary Lapse". The second CD contains
all the old favorites from "Wish You Were Here", "Dark Side", and
    "The Wall".

The album is great for headphone listening and you do "feel" like
you are really at the concert. My only criticism of the album is
that every song is executed flawlessly, so you don't have the "rawness"
that comes with a live performance. Also, there is no communication
with the audience between songs which usually makes a live album
so unique and worthwhile to have.

Other than that, the LP set is vintage Pink Floyd!!

Yes, I just popped it in my CD player a few minutes ago. True, the
sound is flawless. I differ with your opinion of seeing them live -
they were flawless when I saw them live (last April). What's important
is that you get the long jams that you don't get on the studio recordings,
like on "Money".

If only you could get a round video of the films they showed, synched
with the music. They have a concert vedeo in the works, but I expect
it will be the MTV many-camera-angles-per-second type, not just a fixed
camera pointed to the stage (like Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense").
When I saw them, I was mesmerized by the whole visual experience going
on around me - films, lasers, giant pigs, kaleidoscopic lights, strange
computerized things on the stage, etc. The band was just a small part
of the whole scene. It would be impossible to do a satisfactory job
with the video.

Unfortunately the CD was recorded last August, at the end of the tour,
when David Gilmour's voice was rather worn out.

Scott

BTW, it's a full digital recording.

Well, you've convinced me. I think I'll call in another order
from Noteworthy next week and get it. BTW, their price is $21.48
    + S&H.

I agree completely. That's why I've been recording and collecting
concert tapes for the last 14 years. In general, live albums
(particularly CDs) have excellent sound quality but are edited,
overdubbed, and compressed, and thus fail to capture the unique
"electricity" of a real concert.

One of the best live recordings I've ever heard is Pink Floyd at
Boston Garden, 6/18/75. The quad sound system that they used that tour
more than made up for the lousy acoustics in the Garden. The set list
(not necessarily in concert order) was:

Raving and drooling (later became "Sheep")
You gotta be crazy (later became "Dogs")
Shine on you crazy diamond ->
	Have a cigar ->
	Shine on you crazy diamond
Dark side of the moon (the whole thing)
	Echoes

Excellent album. I bought it on Saturday and at once made a tape for
the car. It's currently playing on my Pioneer, yes it's neat with the
multiplay, again. The quality is absolutely astounding for a live
recording, even the everpresent 60Hz hum is absent. (How's that for a
    sentence?).
Especially the cuts with a really low bass comes out incredibly clean.

A steal for $23.99 at Strawberries.

Note 1417.0 commented that there is no communication with the audience
between songs. Does this mean that the tracks are faded out, and
    faded in.

1417.7<>COMET::FERRISMDear Mr. Fantasy....Mon Dec 05 1988 06:077

No, none of the tracks are faded out. Its just that Pink
Floyd is such a polished and prefessional band its not their
style to be interrupting their show with idle chatter, I like
it that way with this band.

1417.8"new" Syd Barrett album outOWSLEY::ABBOTDropping circle stones on a sundialMon Dec 05 1988 13:0113
This may or may not belong here, but the "missing" Syd Barrett album
is out on CD. It's an import, on Harvest. Rockit Records in Nashua has
it for $16.99.

Re: live album
No, there isn't much stage chatter at a Pink Floyd show. As I recall,
just a few things like "good evening", and introducing the band members.
No great loss not having it on CD. They did cut a few songs out of the
show - Welcome to the Machine, A New Machine ("I have always been here..."),
maybe a few others. They did the entire new album in the show (Foxboro
5-6-88). They were also doing Echoes in the earlier shows.

    RE: .7

I DISAGREE!! On the soundtrack "The Song Remains the Same", Led
Zeppelin does a couple of verbal song introductions (my favorite is "This
is a song of hope...", introducing "Stairway to Heaven").

I would hardly call them an unprofessional or unpolished band.

I don't recall the name of Syd's "new" album, but it was a one-word
title (like "Snail" or something), has a black and white photo of him
on the cover. It's not a new recording - I believe it was made close
to 20 years ago. I'll check it out more carefully on my next trip,
maybe even buy it.

What I think of "Delicate Sound of Thunder".

I'm not what you would consider a "fan" of Pink Floyd. In fact,
I thought "Dark Side of the Moon" was a load of crap, and I've
never heard any of their other albums.

But ..... based on the comments made in this note, I asked someone
to record "Delicate .." so I could listen to the music rather than
the quality. I played the cassette twice, and began to appreciate the
performance - rough voices and all.

I bought the CD at the weekend for five reasons ...

. My CD collection was drifting into the cosy, safe area. I have
tended to buy collections (best of ..., G.H., etc) because of
the cost of CDs, the number of tracks on compilations, and I
knew the content. The problem with playing safe is that you
        have very little contrast.

. I think "Delicate ..." can be looked on as an "event" recording.

. On the whole, I like the content, and I think that it has enough
of a raw edge. Everytime I listen to it I hear something different
        (including Dr. Who).

. I've always avoided LIVE performance recordings because they
never came near the studio version I was used to. In this case
I've never heard most of the tracks before - so I don't have
        that problem.

. The sound quality and mixing are excellent.

As usual, the only gripe I have is the cost 17.99 POUNDS (31 dollars).
It's O.K. for you guys in the States, but it's rip-off time again in
    the U.K.

Mind you, $30 is still only about #20.

It's always nice to hear of someone else turning on to Pink
Floyd. I think this is a good record to bring in new recruits since
it engulfs a good portion of their 20+ year history - sort of a
Greatest Hits with an 80's flair. Also, in regards to your comment
about live alblums not sounding like the studio, I think (IMHO)
that Pink Floyd is one of the few bands who are able to duplicate
their sound in concert (RUSH is also quite good at this, but I can't
vouch for thier "new direction"). Happy listening!

p.s. Doesn't "One of These Days..." predate Dr. Who?

It's 17.99 in "Our Price" Records, (aka W H Smith) in Reading. So it's
not a GREAT price in comparison to the US price, but it's better than
