1414.0. "Smithsonian Jazz series on CD?" by PALMER::PALMER (half a bubble off plumb) Thu Dec 01 1988 06:22

Does anyone know if the Smithsonian Jazz series is available
on CD. My Dad has a 6 album set of recordings by various
jazz artists compiled by the Smithsonian. He loves the set and
I'd like to pick him up a CD version of the collection.

To my knowledge, neither the Smithsonian "Collection of Classic
Jazz" (7 records), the "Big Band Jazz" anthology (6 records),
nor the "Singers and Soloists" anthology (? records),
is available on CD -- LPs and tapes only.

It may be a licensing restriction -- similar to why none of the
Mosaic "Complete Blue Note Recordings of" sets is available on CD.

I am also waiting for the Smithsonian to release some of their great
anthologies on cd. So far, no luck.

However, I did hear recently of a new collection from Smithsonian that
will be released on cd. I think it's a new Smithsonian subsidiary
label, and it will be an anthology of Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly
recordings. It's supposed to have the same contents as the recently
released collection of covers by contemporary artists (I don't remember
the name of that collection), but performed by the originals.

The name of the CD with the cover versions on is "Folkways: a vision
    shared".

Yes, the "Vision Shared" set with the cover versions funded
Smithsonian's acquisition of the Folkways archives. And it's some of
the original Folkways performances by Leadbelly and Guthrie that are on
the Smithsonian/Folkways release. One review I saw said the Smithsonian
set added several additional titles to the titles covered in "Vision
    Shared".

Besides the Smithsonian jazz anthologies mentioned earlier, I would
like to have the mammoth "Smithsonian Collection of Country Music" on
    CD.

And (back to jazz) "Louis Armstrong & Earl Hines 1928, and (perhaps the
best Smithsonian release ever) "Duke Ellington 1940". But then, you'll
be able to get most of the former on forthcoming Columbia CDs, and you
can get all of the latter (I assume) on the RCA "Blanton-Webster Band
    1940-1942" Ellington CD release.

Actually, the one I'm really waiting for is the Smithsonian collection
"American Popular Song." This is a great collection of recordings
covering songs of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood from early in
the century up through the 1950's.

RE: .0

It's kind of late now, but...

It sounds like the Smithsonian anthology your father has might be
the first edition of the "Collection of Classic Jazz". They did
issue a second edition, 7 records, with lots of changes and additions.
Plus the "Big Band Jazz" collection is definitive, covering from
the beginnings to the 50s. So there may be gift possibilities,
    despite the unavailability of CDs...

P.S. If you're in the Boston area, the Harvard Coop stocks those
anthologies (call first), and I imagine Tower does too (I
know they stock other mail-order series).
