I was leafing through an issue of Parents magazine, and saw an ad for the "My First Sony" line of products that are designed for kids. In among the expected items such as tape recorders and sing-along boxes, there was a CD player, in bright red (I think), with a big handle! I have no idea of how much this cost. I can just imagine my 5-year-old with it.... Steve

The January issue of Digital Audio has a product blurb on this. The model number is D-5000 and lists for $199. It appears to be based on the D-4. To quote: "The D-5000 was designed with small hands in mind. Housed in brightly colored tough plastic and equipped with oversize buttons and knobs, the inexpensive (well, relatively) unit pays special attention to vibration damping and laser tracking, which Sony claims is excellent. A supplied microphone permits kids to sing along, and a built-in, full range mono speaker lets them listen in the company of friends. Other features include a stereo line out, automatic music search, high speed search, DC-in jack for an optional AC adapter (the D-5000 uses six 'C' batteries), and CD3 compatibility." Apparently the first 10,000 units come with a free CD3 disc of children's songs! Steve |
