1399.0. "DDD Magazine/CD Hotline" by HAZEL::STARR (Like a fool, fell in love with you...) Mon Nov 21 1988 11:49

Over the past weekend, I got a magazine in the mail entitled DDD Magazine.
It is a free publication put out to people who have called the CD Hotline
(sponsored locally by WBCN, although it is a national hotline). The cover
story is on the making of Eric Clapton's 'Crossroads' collection.

There is an interesting column in the magazine entitled 'Troubleshooters'.
It has information on CDs that have been released more than once by a
record comapny, with different mixes each time.

Some examples:

Blind Faith - originally, there were two extra tracks on the CD, but they
were actually songs from Ric Gretch's solo LP, not Blind
Faith. The new version drops those songs, and also uses a
better source for a higher quality recording.

Cream - Disraeli Gears - remasterd and reissued. Original on RSO is
supposed to be aweful, the new one on Polydor is much better.

Byrds - both 'Original Singles' and 'Greatest Hits' are going to be
reissued soon by CBS with better sound quality.

Dylan - Blonde on Blonde - the original was cut by almost five minutes.
CBS is rereleasing it complete, and allowing a free swap for
        owners of the old disk!

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours - In 1987, Warner released a newer version of this
album that sounds 'significantly better' than the first.
You can tell the new version because it has an 'RE-2'
in the matrix number on the disk.

U2 - Joshua Tree - The newer version, marked 'RE-1', was remixed by the
band because it sounded too 'dense'.

Springsteen - Born To Run - The original version was mnaufactured in
Japan. The newer, improved version was manufactured in the
U.S. According to DDD, make sure you get the latter.

The magazine also has articles on new technological developments, and
reviews of CD's. And best of all, it is free! I suggest for more info,
call the CD Hotline (1-800-CD-INFO-1 or 1-800-234-6361).

Is there any information on the disc/packaging to indicate which
"Blonde on Blonde" is the full version?

> Is there any information on the disc/packaging to indicate which
> "Blonde on Blonde" is the full version?

According to the article, the original version's running time is 67:14.
The second version, which is currently out, has a "2" at the end of the
matrix number (on the inner circle of the disk itself). The newer
versions will have a "4" after the matrix number.

Quoted from the article:

"When this new version [#4] is available, consumers who purchased earlier
versions can arrange for a free swap by contacting the marketing department
at Columbia Records, 51 West 52nd Street, NY, NY 10019. This pertains to
the dometic release only."

1399.3Any news about "Face the Music"?BAVIKI::GOODMichael GoodTue Nov 22 1988 10:4120
    Alan,

Thanks for the information. I'm going to call these folks later
today to get my own copy, but I'll post this question here anyway:

Did they mention anything about plans to re-release "Face the Music" by
Electric Light Orchestra? They really butchered that in it's first
release, chopping about 5 minutes of music off an album that was only
about 40 minutes long in the first place! I returned it to the store
(who took it back when I was persistent about it), but would still
like to have a CD version of the entire album.

I got Blonde on Blonde when it first came out on CD, so you already
have good news for me. (I wasn't familiar with the LP version, so I
didn't know there was music cut off until I read a review a month or so
after I bought it.) Now I wonder if I can exchange my 2-CD version of
Chicago II for the 1-CD version currently available - I think I'll be
calling up CBS' CD number for more information.

Well, nothing specifically about ELO, but this paragraph pertains to all
CBS releases:

"Preliminary research has revealed that when CBS Records began pressing
CDs in the United States in the summer of 1984, new digital masters were
delivered to the DADC plant in Indiana. In many cases, these masters were
different from those previously delivered to CBS/Sony in Japan, and in some
cases these new masters represented significant sonic improvements. These
redone CDs include Bruce Springsteen's 'Born to Run' and Santana's
'Abraxas', as well as many titles from Bob Dylan and Billy Joel. Look for
a full report on remastered CBS CDs in a future issue. In the meantime,
I suggest you play it safe and only pruchase CBS products that were
manufactured in the USA."

Good luck - maybe ELO will be/is another one being remastered and reprinted!

BTW, if there are any specific questions you have about certain disks, you
can write to this 'Troubleshooters' column and ask.

1399.6Hype or what?DECWET::THOMASEr, this *is* irrelevant, isn't it?Tue Nov 22 1988 14:134
So is this magazine marketing hype from CBS, or does it cover all

No, it is an independent publication, sponsored by various companies.
It both praises and criticizes many of the labels. This issue alone
dealt with Polygram, Sire, Columbia, Warner Bros., RCA, Capitol, and
Island Records.

Also, they had articles on hardware from companies such as Sony, Philips,
Yamaha, Pioneer, and Hitachi. There are also articles on new technologies
such as CD+G (CD Plus Graphics) and recordable CDs from Tandy.

Another interesting note: Because of the complaints about the poor sound
quality on Derek and the Dominoes 'Layla' CD, Polygram is thinking of
putting out a deluxe boxed set of that CD (remixed from the original tapes,
which they just found), and include a couple hours worth of unreleased
songs and jamming that were found.

1399.8Yet another version?RT3::STRATTONI (heart) my wifeSun Nov 27 1988 21:1819
re .2 and the Dylan CD _Blonde on Blonde_ - the copy I have
has a total time of 71.31:

>According to the article, the original version's running time is 67:14.
>The second version, which is currently out, has a "2" at the end of the
>matrix number (on the inner circle of the disk itself). The newer
>versions will have a "4" after the matrix number.

The only number on the "inner circle" is "DIDP 70406",
followed by three-four "spaces" (one "space" = width of
the previous characters), followed by "11".

The disk also says "Made in USA".

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure I bought it at Tower
Records in Boston in January, 1988.

Hmmm, I must admit to being confused.....the info you provide doesn't
match up with anything in the article! Maybe call the CD Hotline for
more info, or CBS Records?

Jeez, this is confusing, eh?

BTW, I checked my copy of Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" - the "2" on the
matrix number is quite obvious and visible.

   re: Blonde On Blonde

   I ordered "B O B" a few weeks ago from Noteworthy and it's the "4"
version, clocking in at 73:13. A way to tell which version a disk is
without having to buy it and look at the matrix number might be to
look for song lengths on the back cover, unless they lied. One of the
songs butchered on the first CD release was "Sad Eyed Lady Of The
Lowlands", and is listed with a time of 11:19 on mine.
