1393.0. "Atlantic R&B???" by RTPSWS::BRILEY (Are you a rock or leaf in the wind) Wed Nov 16 1988 11:51

A friend of mine has a collection of alblums featuring the best
of Atlantic Records R&B from 1947 thru 1977. I fell in love with
this set. Does anyone know of a CD equivalent? I am particularly
interested in the period from around 1958 to 1968, and artists such
as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Ray Charles, and Aretha Franklin.
Anyone have any suggestions, and if so what is the sound quality
    and price?

    Thanks

    Rob

That collection is available on c.d.

Because the LP version is a set of 2 LP packages, some of the CD
    equivalents have tracks deleted.

I too am thrilled with the Atlantic R&B anthology. So thrilled
that, after buying Vols.4-6 of the CDs (covering roughly the period
you're after) and realizing some cuts from the LP were missing,
I went out and got the 14-LP set as well. I think that's a good
way to do it actually -- get the peak years (to my ears 63-69) in
Vols. 5 and 6 of the CDs, then get the LPs for deeper background.
The Vol.6 CD, in particular, is great from start to finish -- I
even like the cuts I never liked on the radio, in that sequence.

Since latching onto the Atlantic set, I also acquired the 3-CD Otis
Redding "Story" and the Aretha "30 Greatest Hits". Once my finances
recover, I'll consider the Wilson Pickett "Greatest Hits" CD, and await
decent collections of early Ray Charles & Solomon Burke on CD --
whether from from Atlantic or from that British Charly outfit.

I bought the lp set last in '87 as a Xmas present for myself. I'm
sorry to see that Atlantic took the easy way out on the CD issue
of the set by dropping tracks. I understand the time problem, but
there are other ways to solve that.

As it turns out, with a new stylus, an old Technics TT (heavy platter,
remember those ??), the lp's sound very good, even in comparison
to the CD's. A friend has the CD set & we've A-B'd a few tracks.
Everything was properly remastered, digitally - and virgin vinyl
was used in it's manufacture. This was sort of a swan song project
for Ahmet Erteghun, who stepped down as head of the board of directors
of Atlantic just shortly after the sets were released, but not before
getting another project started - the Atlantic Jazz & Blues series.

I recommend this set in any media - discs, tapes or lp's - for anyone
interested in a serious anthology of New York/New Jersey R&B & Soul.

re .3 As for the Ray Charles stuff, I'd check out the 2 disc set
of his Minit/Impulse/ABC sides recently issued on Dunhill, remastered
by Ray himself & Steve Hoffman (or is it Bill Inglot....arrrgghhh!!).
Ray's Atlantic best already appear on the R&B anthology - it was
his '61-'67 stuff that got him dubbed "genius."

Actually I'm a big fan of the ABC stuff. All I actually own of it right
now is that old "25th Anniversary" 2-LP set (a nice bit of detente between
Atlantic and ABC, both represented). But I've heard a lot of other great
cuts ("I Don't Need No Doctor") which I hope are on that set you mention.
Thanks for the pointer.

IMO, it was Ray's '53-59 Atlantic stuff that pioneered a more gospel-styled
R&B (along with others, I know, but Ray's was rougher) that culminated in
Aretha. And the Atlantic anthology doesn't capture all the best of it --
what about "I Believe to My Soul", "Tell the Truth", to pick only a couple.
Actually, there is that Ray Charles multi-disk set, "A Life in Music" --
but last I looked at it, the cut selection seemed questionable. There
is a Charly set, "Tell the Truth", that may be the most playable end-to-end
collection I've found.

So I think it's both the Atlantic stuff (in R&B, C&W, and jazz veins) and
the ABC stuff that got him dubbed genius, for his creativity over an
extended period within many genres. In any case, I definitely want both
Atlantic & ABC Ray Charles in my collection... - John C.

I know this is a long shot, but would anyone care to list what's
    missing on the CD compilation?

I can tell you only what's missing on Vols. 4-6.

4: Ray Charles, Let the Good Times Roll
       Ikettes, I'm Blue (Gong-Gong Song)
       Falcons, I Found a Love
5: Nat Hendricks, Mashed Potatoes I & II
    6: Otis & Carla, Tramp
       Booker T & the MGs: Hip-Hug-Her
       Bar Kays, Soul Finger

The information is on the back cover of each CD booklet -- but of
course you have to open the shell to see it. (Cute.)
