1392.0. "CSN&Y - 18 years later" by VICKI::LEBLANC (not now) Tue Nov 15 1988 09:00

    How about a note to review/discuss the new CSN&Y - I emphasise *Y*
CD 'AMERICAN DREAM'. I do not yet have a copy; based on the
one review I have read, the album should be significant.

i have heard just the single and i was very disappointed with the
'a side' of this 45. it sounds like someone is trying to make
Neil Young sound happy. he sounds like he has listened to "don't
wory - be happy" once to often.

happily, though, i flipped the record over. the 'b side' is IMO
classic CSNY. i hope the album reflects more of the 'b side' than
    the 'a side'.

it should be out in the stroes officially today.

As a CSNY follower i hope the cd will capture the sound they
have excelled at......harmony!I've followed them from the summer
    of '69 csn..then csny..then csn...then csny...then csn again...and
finally csny again...I hope the new release brings me back a few
years to the days when life was less hectic!

    It's out and it's great!
14 tracks -over 60 mins of music!!
From Neil and Stills together (my favorite pair) to the harmony
that we all remember from 18 years ago.

The new CSNY, in my opinion, is an instant classic. It's all
    digitally recorded too.

My favorite is the Crosby solo "Compass". After having seen him
many times in the last few years and being saddened by the poor
condition of his voice, it's great to hear his clear youthful
voice again. Shows what happens when you clean up your life.
Now I want to get his autobiography (excellent reading, I'm told).

He's supposed to have a new solo album coming out any time now
(could be a month, or it could be years) on A&M.

1392.5No Deja VuCOMET::LEVETTThey're all a bunch of Baggums!Mon Nov 21 1988 16:1519
This past weekend I was given a tape that contained 6 songs
from the new CSN&Y lp. I wish I could share your excitement.
Please don't get me wrong, CSN&Y have always been one of my
favorites but what I heard lacked the drive, the vocal interplays,
(yes the harmonies are good) or the urgency of their past material.
The recording seems more of a chore than the excitement experienced
on "Deja Vu". This lp came about as a result of a promise that
Neil gave David if he "cleaned up his act." It sounds as if it
was done just for that reason, an obligation owed.
Maybe the tape I heard only had the worse of the lot on it,
but why would a person record a tape of their worse favorite songs?
Neil has definately sounded better and written better, same with
Stills though the man can still play a mean guitar. I didn't get
a chance to hear "Compass" but if it's anything like how he did
it in concert, it's probably the best thing on the album. Oh, maybe
I'm just getting old but I long for the sounds they produced way
    back when.

1392.6or better than everCEDSWS::HARDING_Tlivin in a rock n roll fantasyMon Nov 28 1988 16:5514
    	And from the other side...

This is GREAT! 'Deja Vu' was good but it was a group of songs
written separately by individuals. Much more collaboration gives
'American Dream' a different feel, and the issues of the day are
not the ones of fifteen years ago. I think their voices sound
    even better with age.
One think I feel is very important, listen to this one in the
order presented. Not because of any particular message you might
get, rather to experience a well made disc. It flows very well.

    Who is Y? Neil Young!

I've never been a CSNY fan, except for the Y part. But I heard the
American Dream single on the radio and read a couple of reviews, and
got this album. I like it much better than the CSNY music of old.
After one listen, my impression is that the album is uneven, but the
high points (like Nightime for the Generals/Shadowland, Night Song,
American Dream, Compass) are very nice. I wonder how I'll like it with
repeated listenings. It was interesting to me that two of my
favorites on the album were the two Crosby tunes.

I'd recommend it to anyone who has been a fan of any of these guys,
assuming you're interested in what they're doing now, not just the
sound they were making 20 years ago.

I am another aging Woodstock person. I loved CSN&Y in the sixties.
I have Deja 'vu on CD and love it. I bought American Dream as an
impulse buy while strolling through the music section at Lechmeres.
I was disappointed. Not that it was bad, it just wasn't great.
I guess they have mellowed just like we did. There were hints of
the magic there, but as pointed out earlier by someone, I think
    it is very uneven.

I'm not sorry I spent the money. I will probably listen to it every
now and then. But I can remember days in 70 when I had Deja playing
all day... you can't go home again.

I, too, am of the same generation. I loved the music of Woodstock,
and the rock of the 60's. I will be buying Deja Vu very shortly.
In relating to your lament, I just got Led Zepplin I from Noteworthy.
I was just sitting there listening to this remarkable CD and
wondering,"What ever happened to these guys?" "Did they just get
older, or did they just forget how to make music like this?"
I'm sure that Robert Plante couldn't hit some of those notes now
even if his life depended on it! You said it right when you said
I guess you just can't go home again! Try Zep I; you'll like it!

I just picked up Dj Vu and it was nice listening to it after all
those years of an old scratched album. Also have the first 5 Zeps
    to replace my old albums.
But if ya wanna here a good one, pick up Jimmy Pages'- Outrider.

1392.13Help on Crosby solo effortCOMET::LEVETTThey're all a bunch of Baggums!Wed Jan 11 1989 15:419
Has anyone seen David Crosby's new lp out on cd yet? Is the lp
out yet? According to his book "Long Time Gone" he indicated that
his lp was released with a title "Oh Yes I Can" a reply to those
who thought he could never kick the drug habit.

    Any info would be appreciated.

No, his new album isn't out yet, but "If I could Only Remember My Name" is.
I picked it up last week at Rocket records for $10.99. This disc is a remix
of the original sessions, by the original producers. Too bad they didn't
do it with the CSN albums.

BTW, does anyone have a recent pressing of "CSN"? Is "Cathedral" still
at the wrong speed? :-(

Thanks for the info...I'll be keeping my eyes open. Funny,
I wasn't ablt to get ahold of his first solo lp on cd in Colorado
having checked all the stores in the Springs and a number in Denver.
Last week I was back east and went to Tower thinking I'd find it
there...nope! The reply I got was "just because we're the worlds
largest doesn't mean we have everything!" Was driving to a mall
in Framingham and happened across a Newberry Comics and remembering
them from the notes file pulled in. Yep they had it...$9.99.
The guy couldn't believe I'd travelled 2000 miles for a Crosby cd.
