1375.0. "info on TELARC discs" by GLASS::HULL (Hallalujah!! The Resurrection (Plan A) has come!) Sun Nov 06 1988 22:03

A local Detroit area music shop, "Sam's Jams", had a sale on CDs this
weekend. Their ad read in huge letters "All CD Sale - $10.99" and went on
to show about a dozen specific discs on the page. The ad implied however
that ALL CDs in the entire store were on sale. When I got there I asked
and they said it was a misprint but they'd honor the mistake.

So I found 5 TELARC discs I'd been wanting (they listed at the outrageous
price of $18.99 each - I've usually seen them at around $16-17). But at
the checkout I ultimately only paid $10.99 each - saved $40 on 5 discs.
They commented that I was getting a great deal. I told them I knew that.
Then the clerk said they were losing money on my sale (they tried to cut
off the sale prices above $15.98 discs, but I insisted and won). I just
smiled at her after the losing money comment. The markup on these must be
outrageous.

That little story aside, I saw in the jacket liners for the TELARC discs
that they have a catalog and a newsletter available. Has anyone gotten
these, and if so, what kind of prices do they have (or can you only get
them thru a retail shop)? I love the quality of their recordings.
Gorgeous sound.

I got the catalog and I'm on the mailing list for the newsletter.
The catalog is just a list of their releases. They do NOT offer
to sell direct to individuals, so there are no prices listed. It's
a pretty color glossy, but not of much use unless you don't know
    what releases Telarc offers.

The newsletter is quarterly (cutely called "Quarter Notes") and
is full of a bunch of Telarc hype, mostly. It does list many of
the things that they will release in the next quarter. Other than
that, they mostly review their own recordings and techniques. The
techniques sometimes make interesting reading, but who would trust
anyone to review their own products?

But then again, what do you want for free - your money back? 8^)

Sam's Jams? That's new to me since I've been back to Detroit. Is this
a good record/CD store? Where is it?

I get back to the Detroit area (Royal Oak) every so often to visit my
folks, so news about good stores is always welcome. Harmony House is
the closest decent store that I know about.
1375.3I ordered a bunch of TELARC's CD thru the mailFENNEL::LOUIEMon Nov 07 1988 10:457
I bought a whole bunch of TELARC records from some mail order company
I don't remember right now for $10.99. If you bought two or more
records from them, they would pay for the postage. So my brother
and I bought a whole bunch from them. We both felt that was a very
good price. I will try and find you the address of the company,
I think they pratically specialized in TELARC CD's!

Re: .2 -

Sam's Jams is in (fashionable) Ferndale, on 9 Mile 1 block west of
Woodward. Not really a great looking shop, but they seemed to have a good
selection of just about everything. Prices seemed high without a sale.
