1372.0. "Sony 10 or Pioneer 6?????????" by RAIN::DIBIASI (CYBERNETIC HEARTBEAT) Fri Nov 04 1988 14:10

    Hi,

Im just about to buy a multidisc changer and I can't decide
    which one to get.

         Sony CDP-100:4Xos,10 disc,Shows cd on display,cheaper
                      in price

                              or

Pioneer PD-7000:8xos,6 disc,Optic and pure digital output,
Auto fader and about 100.00 more than the
                         sony

My question is this:Does anybody own either of the two?
                         Which one is more dependable?
Do you think 8Xoversampling is that much
                         better then four?
Im not going to use the optic or pure digital
outputs but maybe in the future......

Both a fully programmable with remotes and headphone volume
          control.

Which one is the most dependable???????

Please help me make my choice.Thank you

You'll probably be happy with either one. 4X vs. 8X oversampling
is hype. Both are good players.

I'd probably go with the Sony, but only after checking each and
every one of the bells and whistles to make sure it works not only
the way the instructions say it does, but also the way common sense
    would dictate.

A friend of mine, went out and bought a new multidisc
player from Magnavox! This was on sale at Sears last
Saturday. It supposedly is a cartridge type player.
He had to back order the unit, as they had just run
out. The list price was around $300, sale price $229

It should be in within 10 days. I will check it out,
and comment then. Anyone else heard of this player?

    re .3

I saw the Magnavox player on sale at service merchandise a while
back. The neat thing about it is that it uses the Pioneer cartridges,
    which are widely available.
1372.5changer to go...STAR::BIGELOWBruce Bigelow, DECnet-VAXMon Nov 07 1988 10:147
If you're considering a 10 disc changer, it sounds like you're really
into CDs. If you have a spare $1000 to burn, the 10 disc cartridge
from the Sony also fits their "disc jockey" trunk mount CD player,
so you could have the same capability on wheels! 8^)

    Deebs,

Big red ,aka. Honda, is coming out with a new super powered
cd player. 100+ cds all in auto blast mode, think about it,
you could blow away all those american cd riders without even
    skiping a track. :-)

    sorry Deebs, couldn't resist.

Look at one of the last issues of consumer reports, I believe
they have checked out the multi players within the last few
months. Consumers is available in your friendly local Digital
    Library.

1372.8One more question please.......RAIN::DIBIASICYBERNETIC HEARTBEATMon Nov 07 1988 14:338

By the way, does anybody have that issue of consumer reports that
the amazing Dave mentioned in his last episode?:^)

Could you tell me what CD changer did the best and how well the
    Sony did.Thanks in advance.

    Yo Dave and Deebs,

    Stig here.

Well, I've been doing quite a bit of looking to replace my current
Sony with a mutli play. Everything I read seemed to say that all
the name brand models are good inside. What I found, it's the kind
of options you might ant on one unit and the other doesn't have.
I'm still leaning towards the Sony, because of reputation and that
my current unit hasn't skipped a beat in hundreds off hours played.
I looked at that Sont 10 disc unit, and decided to I really need
to have 10 discs in there. It's like owning 4 Harleys, I mean do
    you really need it? :-)
Well, I'm just about decided to get the CDP 70, since I'm convinced
Sony's approach to the tray, is alot better (my opinion) that having
to load a cartridge and place it in the unit. Plus you can also
drop 3" discs and mix them.
So my choice is the CDP70 when it goes on sale at Lechmere since
I can get 30 to play with it and take it back, no questions if I
    don't like it.

    Well,

4 Harley's sounds good to me!

The Sony is probably a good buy. I have the military catalog
at home and will let you know the prices that they sell for
overseas. But most are available in the US for the same price
as overseas, with import tariffs. I priced a Yamaha cdx 900
at $700.00 at Cookin and the catalog had it for $410.00.
Sound like reasonable markup to you. Yes, I can to the same
conclusion, look some place other than Cookin or Tweeter.
Do any of you have friends in the military, if so they can
order at the overseas prices now. It takes a little bit of a wait,
but the savings may be worth it.

Dave who will be having a root canal tomorrow,
so will publish the overseas prices later
    	   in the week.

    Re: military prices

When I was in the Army in the 1970s, the rule of thumb for pricing
was (overseas) PX price was 1/2 US list. The difference believe it or not,
is in the tariffs and import duties, not markup.

We used to buy cases of Budweiser beer for $1 less than a case of
Coke because we didn't have any booze taxes to pay.

    a little extra(40.00)to get an unconditional 5yr warranty!It does
EVERYTHING......WELL!Check it out if your looking for one.

                 Thanks for your help everybody.

$499 for a CDP-C70? That's a stiff price - I got mine at a Highland
Appliance sale for $399, and that wasn't much off the list, maybe $30
under. It was exactly $100 more than the C50 I had originally gotten.
1372.14Its the "Softail custom" of CD changers...RAIN::DIBIASICYBERNETIC HEARTBEATTue Nov 08 1988 14:053

     No,no,499.00 for a CDP-100.The one I talked about when I
    opened this topic.It's Sony's finest 10disc changer.(I think)
1372.15Pioneer vs Sony for autosGRANPA::DLEADERThu Nov 10 1988 12:1513
I just bought the Pioneer PDM700 for $470. What sold me was the
fact that other manufacturers (Denon, for one) is using the exact
Pioneer 6 pack. I want to be compatible with a future car CD changer
(if I ever can get some $$$ for it), and I felt that the 6 pack
will be used by more car CD units in the future.

By the way, is the Sony car player the same carasell (sp) as the
home unit? The carasell (sp) is removable is it? I bought the
Pioneer so I could quickly pop in a cartridge in my car's trunk
    - and drive!

The Sony trunk mounted units use the Sony (big surprise) 10 disc
cartridge/cassette. The carousel changers are, as far as I know,
only home units.
1372.17QUARK::LIONELAd AstraThu Nov 10 1988 22:229
Right, the Sony car player (CDX-A20) uses the same 10-disc cartridge
as the CDP-C100. Pioneer has a similar car changer that accepts the
    cartridges from its home unit.

From a recent review I read, the actual player of the Sony CDX-A20
is marvelous, but the Pioneer control panel is nicer than the Sony's.
Too bad you can't mix and match!

    Re: .14
The Sony CDP-C15ESD is Sony's "best" multi-player. Not sure of the
price but, it's based on the 100 and has 18 bit resolution and 8X
oversampling, optical outputs, more power supplies, and 226 disc
    memory.

    Craig,
Is that any real big difference?Someone said earlier that 4xos
verses 8xos is just alot of hype.Ive already got a 2xos Sony and
I don't hear ANY difference. As for the other things you mentioned,
what difference do those features make?

I was down at BJ's last night, they have the TEAC 6 pack player
for $239.??, I think its a model 500 or 5000 with a letter or two
added somewhere - whatever, it looks like a Pioneer clone, has
remote, etc., - but it was the PRICE that caught my attention.
