1370.0. "need info for CD newcomer" by STEREO::COUTURE (Gary Couture - Govt. Syst. Group - Merrimack NH) Wed Nov 02 1988 09:16

I have been thinking lately of getting into the CD craze. I have some basic
questions that I could use input on. What Id like, if feasable, is a
portable unit that I can: (in this order)

1- use in a portable mode (such as at work) where I may or may not have access
   to 110 v

2- use in my truck. I dont want to permanently install it, I would be content
with just sitting it on the floor or seat. but can I run it off cigarett
outlet (12v) and is there too much vibration/shock in a truck for a CD?
Ive noticed some sony models at Leichmere claim to be shock mounted.

3- Ocassionally I'd like to hook it up to my home stereo system.

So, can I buy a Single unit that will meet the above needs and be in a 200-300$$
range??

can anyone reccomend models.

will the unit stand up to the abuse of the truck and moving around?

What about headphones?? are the ones included with unit acceptable?

thankx for any info

Hi Gary,

In regards to some of your questions,

1- use in a portable mode (such as at work) where I may or may not have access
   to 110 v

Almost all of the portable models come with some sort of rechargeable
batteries, some last longer that other.

Some do have the capability to run of the lighter but I would
imagine that if its not permanently installed that vibration
would be a problem. I had mine on the armrest but each time
I hit a bump it would skip.

3- Ocassionally I'd like to hook it up to my home stereo system.

All that I know of can be hooked up to a home system.

So, can I buy a Single unit that will meet the above needs and be in a 200-300$$
range??

	Yeesss.

can anyone reccomend models.

Sony makes the best portable in my opnion.

will the unit stand up to the abuse of the truck and moving around?

	Moving yes truck! not sure..

What about headphones?? are the ones included with unit acceptable?

Most of the headphones that come with the units are not that
great. I purchased Sennheiser PD 100 for $40 several years
ago I thing they are outstanding. And since I live in NY and
use them on the subways, this speaks for itself.

Hope this helps.

    Hi Gary,

I recently purchased the SONY d-15 portable with the RECOTRON Cassette
adapter (little electronic gizmpo that looks like a cassette with
a tail). You plug it into the CD player and put it into the cassette
player in your truck. Works jes' fine. I also got a power adapter
so I can run it off the cigarette lighter. Total cost was, as I
    remember:

$296.00 - D-15 (Circuit City in Santa Clara, Ca.)
    		  19.95 - cigarette lighter adapter
    		  22.95 - casette adapter
89.95 Sony headphones (not included w/D-15).
Total 428.85 (or so... no spreadsheet included in this editor
and I've alloewed my additioin skills to atrophy)

I drive a PICK-EM-UP and have had no problems with bumps, rough
    roads, or the like.

    Hope this helps

    Gary,

I got a Sony D-4 back in July. I do all the things with it that
you want to do. It didn't come with headphones, though. It came
with an ac adaptor (which also charges the internal rechargeable
battery), an interconnect cable for connecting it to your home
audio system, and a carrying case and shoulder strap. There
is a jack on it to hook up a remote control sensor (which, along
with the remote control hand unit, is optional).

I HAVE BOUGHT A SONY PORTABLE CD PLAYER WITH A DEVICE THE HOOKS
UP TO THE HEADPHONE JACK OF THE PLAYER. THE OTHER END LOOKS LIKE
A CASSETTE AND I USE THIS SYSTEM JUST AS YOU DESCRIBE. I ALSO PURCHASED
A DC CONVERTER TO PLACE THIS UNIT IN MY CAR SO I DON'T USE UP THE
BATTERYS. IT WORK AT HOME AS WELL.

JUST A REPLY FOR YOUR QUESTIONS.

I too have the Sony D-4 and have been very happy with it. There
are a few drawbacks but not many. It does not take bumps that well
unless it is padded well. There are several adapters that can hold
all the small walk person type players. Best deal is to go with
the brand of the player that you buy. Sound quality is the best
with CDs and there are several car stereos that now have frount
pannel CD inputs. Check it out.
