Hmmm. Straight out of Gaucho....
"Special delivery for Hoops McCann."
I'll have to check around. I seem to remember seeing this somewhere
recently, and the reference clicked, but I thought it was just
coincidence.

1357.2 | They are a big band | RICKS::ANDERSON | | Tue Oct 25 1988 06:53 | 11 |
| I heard an interview on National Public Radio a few months ago with one of the
instigators of this band (I can't remember who it was). I'm not sure if the
membership of the band includes ex-Steely Dan people or not. I do know that
they are a sort-of big band (as in horns and stuff) and the album is big band
arrangements of Steely Dan tunes. They played a few cuts and they do sound
interesting. Steely Dan was always so jazzy that it didn't take much effort
to coax the tunes into big band arrangements. That's all I know. Haven't
seen the CD personally.

1357.3 | | AKOV11::BOYAJIAN | That was Zen; this is Dao | Wed Oct 26 1988 23:41 | 10 |
| I saw a copy of this at BCD today, in the "Jazz New Releases"
section. The full title is something like THE HOOPS McCANN
BAND PLAYS THE MUSIC OF STEELY DAN. It's MCA, catalog number
MCA-42202.
I didn't note down the personnel, so I can't tell you if any
of them played with Steely Dan (I'm not a big Dan fan in any
event, so I couldn't really tell).

1357.4 | Of course, it has Glamor Professsion on it... | HPSCAD::WALL | I don't believe it. | Thu Oct 27 1988 07:48 | 24 |

Well, I'm a huge Steely Dan fan, so I hunted it down and bought it.
According to the liner notes, the Hoops McCann Band was formed as
a one-shot to play at a jazz event of some sort in Portland, Oregon,
and they went over so big they decided to make an album of Steely
Dan music rearranged for medium-sized jazz ensemble. The musicians
are all veterans from Steely Dan studio efforts, although I didn't
recognize any of the names immediately.
I really like the album, although only one or two of the songs would
be recognizable to people who only know Steely Dan by what they
heard of them on the radio. The selection of cuts is somewhat obscure,
although there are two off of Gaucho. They appear to have been
selected for their suitability for rearrangement.
Also for you Becker-Fagen completists, there's a song calle Rapunzel.
This was written by Becker and Fagen for someone else on an album
called Apogee. The album is long out of print.
For people with a taste for Steely Dan or jazz done by a band smaller
than a big band but bigger than a quartet, it's a good choice.

1357.6 | The scoop on Hoops | HPSCAD::WALL | I don't believe it. | Fri Oct 28 1988 07:40 | 23 |

I purchased the CD from Good Vibrations in the Greendale Mall.
It was in the "Jazz H" section of the CD shelves. It was the only
copy I saw there at the time, but GV tends to put only one copy
of slower-selling things out at a time.
I paid $14.95
The disc runs about 44 minutes. It's MCA MCAD-42202, an AAD disc,
but the recording is utterly noiseless as far as I can tell.
Here's the tracking:
Black Cow (6:19)
Babylon Sisters (4:55)
Rapunzel (6:31)
Glamour Profession (4:24)
Throw Back the Little Ones (6:51)
Deacon Blues (6:17)
Green Earring (4:54)
Three by Wally and Donald (2:55) (this is a medley)

1357.7 | Woody Herman did something like this | BAVIKI::GOOD | Michael Good | Mon Oct 31 1988 12:16 | 6 |
| This sounds interesting - I'll have to look for it.
Woody Herman's big band recorded a batch of Steely Dan tunes several
years ago on the "Chick, Walter, Donald, and Woodrow" album (or
something like that). There was a Chick Corea suite on side 1 and
about 5 Dan tunes on side 2. I haven't seen it on CD though.
