1354.0. "Technics CD player, BUY???" by ADVLSI::MALLYA () Thu Oct 20 1988 21:46

I've just bought a Technics SLP-320 CD player which was on sale at
Lechmere (MA) for $240.
It's got remote, 20 track programming, search/skip, 16 bit linear A/D,
and 44.1 KHz sampling.
The reason I feel shaky about it is that I saw the Technics
model SLP-230 on regular price at another store for $219, and it seems
equally good. In fact it's got 2X sampling and dual converters (I think)
which the SLP-320 doesn't have. The salesguy told me that the 320
has been discontinued. So, I'm not sure how/if the 320 is better than
the 230.
I have a 30-day trial period during which I can return the player
for a full refund. So, even though I liked the features etc. on the
Technics player, I'm curious to know how it performs against other
comparable brands in the market, and whether it's worth the price.
I saw the Mag cdb-482 being advertised for $169 and it looks pretty good
too. I also saw a couple of Sony's for around $200. How does Technics
compare with these two?
Any comments/suggestions/recommendations ?
How about the mail order places which advertise in Stereo Review?
Are they reliable, and is that the way to go?

P.S.: I plan to use the CD player in a (yet to be assembled) system
consisting of a turntable (<$200), receiver + speakers (~$1000).

The SLP-320 was last years model. It has 16 bit 2x oversampling
and it listed for $325 last year. It's not listed this year in Audio's
"buying guide". The SLP-230 is a 16 bit 4x oversampling and lists
for $340. The spec's for each one are about the same. Some people
believe that 4x oversampling is better than 2x. I own a Sony 650ESD
II which is a $1,000 player with 2x oversampling and sounds as good to
me as Sony's new 707 ESD (list $1,800) which has 8x oversampling. I
believe the difference is minor if any.

My personal opinion is that, especially in this price range,
2X vs, 4X sampling, 14, 16 or 18 bit DACs, single or dual converters,
etc., are all part of a mind-numbing "specsmanship" game that have
no discernable effect on what you hear. If you find a reputable brand
player that has features you like at a price you can accept, then
go for it. Unless you have $50,000 worth of test equipment at home,
any difference you hear is likely to be imaginary.

I haven't done a comparison at this price point in over a year,
but last time I did the Technics and Pioneer players didn't really
sound that good to me. They were very grainy and bright compared
to the Magnavox, JVC and Sony. The later were also much more musical
at loud volumes. Try to listen to one of the Magnavox players.
Did you try to get it mail order?
The prices on this type of stuff are generally pretty good,
although I am not familar with the store you got yours from.

But don't just take my opinion, see if anyone else concurrs.
