1341.0. "NEC parts available?" by NPOGRP::HIGGINS (What am I doing?) Tue Oct 04 1988 10:25

    Are there any places around Maynard where I can get parts for an
    NEC CD-500 player? I need a new belt for the door open/close mechanism
    and can do it myself if I can only get the belt. Appreciate any
    leads.

    Thank you

1341.1Heavy sigh....BETHE::LICEA_KANEFri Oct 07 1988 15:417

    Hmmm. My NEC CD-650's door open/close mechanism is also acting
    up. Sooner or later, it will never open again, I fear.

    I've no leads, but I ought to look before it dies for good.

1341.2NEC 650 Door ProblemsGRAMPS::LASKYThu Oct 13 1988 11:109
    Funny but my NEC 650 also has door problems!!!!! I have opened it
    up many times and for the life of me I cannot figure it out. It
    seems to work when I push the door in that it is able to come out.

    It's a shame because the unit sounds great but the door is driving
    me crazy! Next time I'll make sure to check out the door assembly
    more closely!

1341.3It's a problem....BETHE::LICEA_KANEThu Oct 13 1988 13:2214
    re: give it a shove, and it'll open up...

    ...for a while. After a few weeks of that abuse, you'll have to give
    it a few shoves, and then the day will come when you resort to finding
    a way to pry your fingernails anywhere, somewhere, to try to grab
    and pull to help it along. That's where I'm at now, and I *don't* want
    to think about what happens when it won't open at all.

    But yes, in hindsight, I wish I'd opened up the unit to look more
    closely at the mechanure when I first brought it home. It's not a
    pretty sight.

    Mr. Bill,

    My problem seems to come and go with the phase of the moon. It'l
    work just fine for about 1 mth then act up again for two weeks then
    disapear again. As stated before when I opened it up to find out
    what the problem was I became baffled, it looked fine to me. It
    seems that the initial torque of the motor is not enough to push
    to media fingers down. I hope that this makes sense, anyway its
    a poor design.

1341.5Would you believe that it was still under warranty?BETHE::LICEA_KANESun Oct 16 1988 17:5416
    re: .4

    The drawer motor seems to have plenty of torque, at least on mine.
    It spins with gumption, whining loudly until the logic unit says
    to the drawer motor "uh, if you haven't gotten it open by now,
    don't bother" and displays an "E" on the display.

    Does your motor actually stall? Is it silent when the drawer doesn't
    open, or does it make noise?

    Anyhow, on mine I'd say the belt is slipping, stretched with age.
    I'll find out for sure in another two weeks. Turns out my unit
    was still in warranty, parts and labor. I bought it one year eleven
    months ago, it has a two year warranty.

1341.6NEVER assume!FRSBEE::HIGGINSWhat am I doing?Mon Oct 17 1988 10:059
    I assumed that the warranty period expired but it is 2 years parts
    and labor so back to the shop! Seems like a poor design using a
    flimsy rubber belt to open and close the door instead of direct
    drive - but then how will they make any money on repairs if it's
    designed well? In my case the warranty is good until Jan. 89 so
    they miscalculated the life of the belt by 3 months. ;^)
