1340.0. "Shortchanged on CD release..." by JACOB::FAZIO () Mon Oct 03 1988 20:03

I just purchased the Roy Orbison CD 'For the loney:18 Greatest Hits'.
My CD player reads the total time as 46.31. The album and cassette
of the same title include 24 songs. I knew this when I bought the
CD but wanted the better quality...I also assumed that the CD would
only handle 18 songs due to limited capacity. I think I read that
a CD can easily handle up to 70+ minutes...so my question is why
wouldn't the CD be identical to the album and cassette release?
    Am I missing something here?

Do I understand you correctly that an LP titled "18 Greatest Hits"
    actually contains 24 songs? Amazing...

I'm sure they just forgot to convert their hexidecimal to decimal....

The CD title is '18 Greatest hits'. To tell the truth I don't know
how the title appears on the LP's. A mail order house I sometimes
use had fine print that said the CD only contained 18 song but the
LP and cassette had 24. I assumed it was due to limited CD capacity.

write the company selling the disc, is the only thing i can think
of. maybe you should also point out to them that RykoDisc has put
over 80 minutes of music on one CD, and see how they squirm out
of that. (is true, _Mission Of Burma_ compilation is 80+ minutes,
    and sounds great)

IMO, this is all just due to greed, having fewer on CD so you have
to either buy both LP and CD, or multiple CD's as they get re-packaged.

I have the "Mission of Burma" c.d, it's over 80 minutes and it
    sounds fantastic.

The release company is Rhino records, and I have no idea why they
only put 18 songs on the CD, but 24 on the record. Most of Orbison's
songs barely topped 3:30. How long is the CD ?? If Rhino had dropped
the readily available Sun sessions from the disc & just put the
Monument label sessions on it, there would've been plenty of room.
By the way, the lp is titled "the 24 greatest hits of Roy Orbison."
