1319.1 | Digital Audio has a review. | IAMOK::PATTERSON | Let Those Who Ride Decide | Wed Sep 07 1988 14:47 | 8 |
| The Marantz CD-94 was just reviewed in the new issue of "Digital
Audio. As I remember, the CD-94 has a front drawer, uses the
Philips 16 bit chip set, is contructed of real metal (not plastic),
is ruggedly constructed, has remote control, and was liked by the
reviewer. It should be for a list price of $1800.00

| I just read the review in DA. Yes, the review was complimentary,
but not in accordance with the player's price. It is basically
a gussied-up Magnavox with the Philips 16-bit chip set. You could
do a LOT better for a lot less money (say the Sony CDP-505ES, or
Philips 960).

| My thanks to both .1 and .2. I'm completely astounded by the price
of $1800. In the review I read, a figure of $1800 was mentioned,
but the way it was phrased led me to think that the Marantz was
being compared to a more expensive unit and that it was THAT unit
that cost $1800. Then, in another place, there was a remark about
the Marantz being about $1000 cheaper than the other unit. Since
the review was part of the "Audio Cheapskate" article, I was wondering
how they justified including a CD player costing $800. But $1800???
Well -- as I said before -- I'm just astounded.
Now I wonder what the actual price on the other unit is -- are there
CD players out there that cost $2800? Does anyone out there own
one? Have something to say about the way it sounds?

| The CD-94 DOES list for $1800 - of course, it will never sell for
that much - maybe around $1300-$1500. It is one of Marantz' new
"94" series of components. There do exist other players at that
price range or higher - some go for $3000 and up. I hardly see
the point....
Really, from the description in DA, there was nothing in the CD-94
to justify the price. Other players that are made just as well
with newer-generation circuitry are less expensive. DA gave it
four stars out of five.
If you're willing to spend that much money, pick up the Sony
CDP-707ESD instead. You'll get a LOT more for it.

| Re. 3
Accuphase makes a 2-box unit for $8000. Sony is supposedly coming
out with a top-of-the-line for about $7000. Krell is working on
a series of 3 CD players for the "Krell Digital" subsidiary. The
"mid-priced" of these 3 is going to be $6000!
So, it is certainly possible to spend the money if you have it.
I agree, I don't see much point with the technology changing so
rapidly.
But, I will run right down to LISTEN when the Krell CD players come
out. Hmmmm, maybe if the bottom-of-the-line is only $3000....

1319.6 | Krells in Boston/Cambridge? | DELNI::TRUSLOW | | Fri Sep 09 1988 12:30 | 7 |
| Well, I'm not about to spend $1800 on a CD player (I think I'd rather
buy a jigsaw puzzle from Stave first), nor even half that -- at
least not in the next few years. But I am very curious about what
people who have listened to these princely toys have to say about
them. Where in the Boston area could I go to hear one of the Krells
mentioned in -.1?

$1800 _is_ cheap to "Stereophile"! :-)

Can't go anywhere to hear the Krell's yet, they're due out around
Christmas.
AudioVision on Mass. Ave. in Arlington carries Krell amps.
Good people.

1319.9 | Cambridge Audio 16X w/32 bits | ISTG::MEISELL | | Tue Sep 13 1988 09:01 | 7 |
| If you're going to listen to the Krell, I have heard of yet another
extremely interesting CD player - the Cambridge Audio (2 piece?).
A blurb I saw mentioned 32X oversampling with 16 bits (or was it
16X oversampling with 32 bits - yes, that's it - still rediculous).
Don't know the price, but would be interested to know what it sounded
like!!

| The Cambridge Audio unit (16X oversampling by 16 bits, as they
put it, though that's not quite accurate) is reviewed in the October
"High Fidelity". They were not impressed.

A recent review in Stereophile gave an opposite position to the
Cheapskate's comments, saying basically that the 94 wasn't very
hot. At $1800, you expect hot.
To the guy who asked how the high end players sound.. very good.
If you go to Natural Sound and listen to say a Denon 1500, and then
listen to a SONY 707ESD at 3 times the price, you will (should)
immediately hear the difference. Plus, you get all the bells and
whistles...
Top end CD costs just like top end any-other-component costs.
