1312.1 | Sony C70 vs C50 | CRETE::MANN | | Thu Sep 01 1988 16:00 | 15 |
| I had looked at both the C70 and C50 before going with C50 from
WDS.
The reason for my going with the C50 was:
1. Same electronics as the C70.
2. The disc memory capabilities were nice but I believe that
255 discs were the limit. If I begin to purchase CDs like
I have records I will be easily beyond that number.
3. Some of the other front panel buttons exist on the C50's
remote, and would probably use them from the remote anyway.
4. The C50 is about $100 less.
It's working out great so far!

There is no need to post the same note twice. Everyone will see
the old note, no matter how far back it is.

Sorry, I've deleted the other note.

| Note 927 dosen't say that much about the CDP-C70. I've checked it
out MO for anywhere from $309-348 w/shipping. You may want to invest-
igate the CDP-C7ESD, it's the same functionally as the C70 but will
sound better and can be had for about $420 mailorder.

Can you elaborate a bit more on the differences between these two?
Also, where might a CDP-C7ESD be found for a look-see in the Eastern MA area?
Thx, Rich

| Rich, Sights and Sounds in Norwood, Ma carries the Sony ES series along
with the Pioneer Elite series. You might want to check there. I'd go along
for the ride.

| The major differences between the two are:
1. Direct digital output. For adding on a separate D/A convertor,
which seems to be the next step in CD technology.
2. Typically Sony ES products have hand picked components which
allow for better sound than mass produced products.
3. Gold output jacks.
4. 3 year parts and labor warranty
5. Copper shielding inside the cover.
There are none in my area, so I'll have to go mailorder for it.
Sony is very picky about it's ES dealers and tends to step on them
hard if they try to discount. Most places can only sell over the
counter but if you call them up and tell them that there are no
ES dealers in your area they will ship you one. 3 places I have
called are:
J.S. Audio in Maryland 301-890-3232 $419
Read Bros. in S. Carolina 803-723-7276 $435
Electronic Creations in Fla. 407-331-5830 $420

| Oh, well, the affair is over. Although I was mostly satisfied with the
features of the C70, it's going back. Turns out that it won't play Track 1 of
my Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" CD. Although it's been playing fine in my Technics
portable for about two years, I thought "bad disc". So I went to Lechmere
tonight, and lo! the CD played just fine in every other deck except the Sonys!
Well, one Sony, the 550, did manage to play it. It would seem from this
admittedly small sample that Sony decks are really sensitive to what might be
a marginal disc. Strange that it would play fine in a Technics, Onkyo,
Pioneer, even a Realistic, but screw up in a Sony. I do like the turntable
design a lot, but a finicky CD player I don't need.
Anybody have recommendations for another multi-disc player with similar
features to the C70, maybe a Pioneer? They seem like nice decks, although the
cartridge doesn't look as elegant as the turntable :-(.
Specific wants (in addition to basic features of C70):
Would like to be able to program past track 30 (C70 has this
limitation).
Full-function remote, with buttons duplicated on the player.
Good time-programmed functions, for tape making.
Not finicky!
Does anybody else make a multi-disc turntable design?
Thanx, Rich

| Sony is the only maker of turntable CD players. Everyone else
uses a cartridge. I wonder what it is that caused a problem with
your disc. Usually the Sony players are very good at playing
marginal discs. Certainly my CDP-510 and earlier D-5 have never
complained about any disc, but I have no experience with the C70.
You might look at the Pioneer PD-M500 and PD-M600 instead.
