Th first PG album should be avialable as a domestic in a couple
of weeks. No word on the 2nd album yet. They are all available as
you know as imports. You should check out Rockit Records in south
Nashua. That's where I found this out.

Matt,
I collected all the Genesis, and P.G. discs as imports, which was
a matter of pride for a while (need to find Trespass tho' !).
In my opinion, PG I is sort of a novelty, PG II finds him sorting
out (and in some cases finding) his own style, and PG III is where
he really hits his stride ! I still think this is his best solo
effort, even though I love Security and So .....
The Birdy soundtrack has some interesting stuff, and now the "Last
Temptation ..." soundtrack should be out soon .... I also am quite
fond of PG Plays Live, I have both the full 2-disc set, as well
as an import compilation (70+ minutes, single disc).
And as I continue to digress, I think PG is the finest artist in
the world today, but I disagree with everyone who says that Genesis
stopped being Genesis after Pete left, I know it stopped being
the "essence of Genesis" when Steve Hackett left, after the Wind
and Wuthering album. There is nothing Mike Rutherford/Daryl Stuermer
can do to re-create that famous Hackett-sound. And Phil did not
start over-extending his voice until the "And then ...", "Duke",
and "Abacab" albums ...... even if there are a couple of nice cuts
on these releases.
On a less pleasant note, apparently PG's personal life is in some
turmoil, with rumors/stories of his involvement with Rosanna Arquette
rampant in the music rags .... He has been married to his wife Jill
for almost 20 years (with some stormy periods ....). Oh well, let's
wait and see what the new album is like ... he almost takes as long
as Donald Fagen/Steely Dan does to release new material .... !
Regards,
- Andy

for his new recording studio, according to a mutual acquaintance.

...as I understand it, he's got his next album (more or less) ready;
completion and release are simply being held up while he's on the
road with Amnesty. I can't wait ... although in my humble opinion,
"So" -- while undeniably superb -- isn't as strong as I, III, or
IV. Then again, "weak" Peter Gabriel is a relative term, and still
blows the doors off of 99.9% of the modern music market.
(re: .2) I do have I and II on tape; I just want to find them on CD
since the sound quality, even of dubs from vinyl, leaves a good deal to
be desired. Frankly, I love PG I (the technical nomenclature,
apparently, is "The Rain-On-Pete's-Car One") and think it's up there
with III and IV as his best work. "Here Comes the Flood" is arguably
one of his very best songs (although I understand that PG himself
prefers the solo-piano-and-Frippertronics version on Fripp's "Exposure"
album) and "Excuse Me" cracks me up every time I hear it. I think
the album also stands as a nice contrast to his later works: not
only can he do the fancy polyethnic rhythms, but the man can also
rock out with the best of them.
PG II, though ("The Pete-Scratches-Through-The-Album-Cover One")
-- while it has some great songs, witness "Mother of Violence" and
"White Shadow" -- doesn't really do as much for me as his other
stuff. As much as I like Robert Fripp, I think he did Gabriel
something of a disservice in the way he produced this album. I
find the second side sort of runs together forgettably, and the
vocals seem really badly mixed -- almost lost -- throughout the
whole thing. (I don't care ... I still want it on CD!)
Anyway, thanks .1 -- I'm heartened that they _will_ be coming out
at some point, perhaps even soon, and I can stop running around
like a maniac trying to get them as imports.
I second the motion from some reply before: in my humble opinion,
Peter Gabriel is the Numero Uno musician working today. (Sweeping
Statement #35)
Anybody know anything more definite about his new album? Rumors?
Swiped demo tapes? The new year is looking pretty good, with new
PG and new Kate Bush on the horizon.

... on a related note, in case anybody might happen to wander by here
again ... (and since DREGS::MUSIC has gone lamentably south :-)
I heard a newsblurb somewhere that Geffen has decided, in its infinite
wisdom, that it's not going to release PG's soundtrack for "Last
Temptation." Is this true? I didn't catch the whole blurb so my
facts might be wrong, but their stated justification seemed to be
that movie soundtracks (ones without Berlin on them, anyhow) don't
really sell. If this is indeed what they claimed, obviously this
isn't the _real_ reason. (They couldn't have lost _that_ much money
on "Birdy" ...) Just what in Sam Hill is going on here?

| I missed the begining bit, but what I heard was Geffen insisting
they would release the soundtrack, but not until later this year.
They claimed that PG hadn't started/finished mixing prior to the
Amnesty tour, he'd finish it after that. For whatever that's worth....

...hmm, maybe that's it. But the guy who was relating the newsblurb
(maybe it was one of the MTVoids) seemed kind of steamed and made
some comment like "well, I guess we know what that says about Geffen,"
which is what made me think this was some kind of scuzzball
record-company move, not simply a delay by PG himself.
Now, let's see; there's another rumor, heard from a different source,
that PG's "next album" is ready to go and awaiting final mix-down when
he gets done with Amnesty. I guess it's possible that the "new album"
is the LToC soundtrack ... (darn! Although I haven't seen the movie
yet, is it a good score? The "Birdy" music was great for the movie,
but it _was_ mostly remakes ... I want a "real" PG album! And I want
PG-1 on CD! And I want him to stop hanging around with Rosanna
Arquette! I want to control _my_ rock stars' lives!! I'm writing my
congressman!!)

I've seen the movie, and I think the score is fantastic. I especially
enjoyed the music played during the end credits.
I wouldn't compare this soundtrack to that of "Birdy". It's all original
and carries the film much better than the "Birdy" score did [in my
opinion]. With "Birdy", I was too familiar with most of the music already
and couldn't remove from my mind the `imagery' that I had already planted
there. [Which makes sense, since most of the music wasn't originally
written for the film.]
> I want a "real" PG album!
Indeed, I also look forward to the next music sans film. However, I look
forward to the release of the LToC soundtrack (in high-quality, digital
audio form) as a "real" PG album.
> And I want him to stop hanging around with Rosanna Arquette!
Remember, a beautiful woman can inspire equally beautiful music!
Selfish, I know... 8^)

It's supposed to be released sometime in January.

Yes. You should be able to find it in any store that carries UK imports.
