1290.1 | Several "Fair Lady"s around | SARAH::P_DAVIS | Peter Davis | Wed Aug 03 1988 16:46 | 19 |
| First, "original cast" and "soundtrack" usually refer to completely
different things. The "original cast" is typically the cast of the
Broadway, London, or someplace else stage production. The soundtrack,
on the other hand, is a movie soundtrack.
Having said that, the original Broadway cast recording of "My Fair
Lady" is available on cd. I'm pretty sure it's on CBS, but I don't
know the number.
There's also a recent recording with the ubiquitous Kiri Te Kenawa and
Jeremy Irons. This one is perhaps worthwhile for the the music not
available elsewhere (for example, the Embassy Ball), but Kiri is
certainly no threat to Julie Andrews in this. I think this one's on
London and, again, I don't remember the number.
I've seen a soundtrack version listed in various catalogs, but I've
never actually seen the disc. It may have existed briefly, and become
out of print. Marni Nixon sings the Eliza role for Audrey Hepburn in
this.

| I think there's a "My Fair Lady" CD available from Varese
Sarabande. I don't have the disc, so I don't have catalog
number or description anywhere.

1290.3 | Original Cast | CSSE32::RHINE | Jack Rhine - DTN: 381-2439 | Wed Aug 03 1988 21:16 | 3 |
| My Fair Lady original cast recording (Rex Harrison & Julie Andrews) is
Columbia CK 2015. I have seen it at various times at Lechmere and Strawberrys.
I assume Tower would have it.

Noteworthy has the Columbia recording mentioned in -1 for $9.95,
discounted to $8.96 but they call it the soundtrack.

| The CD that I mentioned .-2 is recorded in London.

| I believe the Broadway production preceded the London one, despite the
fact that the actors and setting are English. That was back in the
days when the U.S. used to export shows to London.

In the beginning was the Broadway production. Stereo was just coming
into prominance and Columbia was stuck with a hit Broadway show
album available only in Mono. Columbia re-recorded the show in
its London incarnation in stereo and this is the version that is
generally available. Although it's not clearly marked, I believe
the music director was Cyril Ornadel. That's about the best way
to check, since the cast is virtually the same. The mono (Broadway)
version has been out of the catalog for nearly 25 years, I think.
For the record (no pun) there are actually three stage versions
(not counting the Kiri and the film soundtrack): the Broadway and
London and a recording of the 1979 (?) revival. The revival did
_not_ feature Rex Harrison.

| Yes, I had forgotten about the recent revival.
Actually, I think there are many other cast recordings also, but not in
the same language. I have a cd of a German cast of "My Fair Lady." I
wish I understood German, as I'd love to know how they translated a
show that's ABOUT the English language.

| I just read that CBS will release the mono LADY, probably in the
Fall of 1988.
