1284.0. "Database for CD's" by SYSENG::COULSON (Roger Coulson DTN 223-6158) Thu Jul 28 1988 12:16

I have thought of creating a database for my CD's. I am an oldies
collector and at times would like to know just what I have. If
I had a database I could search for a particular title and it would
tell me which disk it is on. Likewise when I see a disk that I might
like to buy I can quickly determine if it has duplicates or if it has
enough new items to be worthwhile. What would you put in the database?
Here are some of my thoughts:

    Song Title
    Artist
    Album or disk Title
    Length (time)
Version/comment (old, new, long, short, live, remastered, original)
    Date recorded

    Any thoughts?

Record label, catalog #, date you got it, what you paid, maybe where
    you got it.

Mine (adapted from a procedure of Andy Leslie's) has just Artist,
Title, Label, and Catalog Number. All I really use it for it to
make sure that I don't buy something I already have (it's hard to
remember, for instance, which Pat Benatar albums I have on CD and
    which only on LP).

My video database is more detailed.

re:-1 Wow, you must have quite a collection. I can remember which
CDs I have so far, but I do have to check for LPs to avoid duplication
    of certain issues, etc.

Well, I have about 420 CD's, but I wish it was only that simple.
I collect *lots* of things. If you consider not only how many
CD's I have, but how many LP's (at a guess, about 500), videotapes
& -discs (~200), books (~15K), and comics (~10K) are all vying for
memory space in my poor, befuddled brain, it's amazing that I can
    keep track of *any*thing.

Actually, it's not really as bad as it seems. I do pretty much
know what I have, it's just occasionally that I'm not sure. There
was only one time I actually bought something that I already had
(both copies were bought used, and I was able to sell the second
copy to a friend), and at the time, I was positive I didn't already
    have it.

Just a couple of thoughts on the needs for a database. I've written
several DBs in the past to cover all kinds of things. Being a personal
computer owner/user I searched long and hard for a product that
would allow me to do the very things described in the previous replies
    - that is create a database, modify it, add new items to the search
list, etc. I finally settled on a package from Symantec Corp. called
Q&A. It's been around for a couple of years, but it has all the
capabilities described plus the ability to do SQL queries to your
    database.

It's neat to be able to type in "CD by Fleetwood Mac" and get a
listing. Take that as deep as you'd like. How about "CD by Fleetwood
Mac copyright 1980". Your ability to provide the detail to the
    database is the restriction.

BTW There are several dedicated DBs in the public domain for CD
collectors or LP collectors or Cassette libraries. I've never found
one that was as complete as I liked - I just develop my own.

Q&A sells at retail for approx. $350, but can be had via mail order
for under $200. I can provide additional details if needed.

    Regards,

    Rick
