1279.0. "Karla Bonoff" by AKOV11::BOYAJIAN (Copyright  1953) Fri Jul 22 1988 04:05

Those of you who are Karla Bonoff fans can rejoice. She's got
a new album out, NEW WORLD, and I just picked it up on CD.
It's been six years since her last album, WILD HEART OF THE
YOUNG, and I was afraid she'd drifted off into musical limbo.
In some ways, she has. The new CD is on Gold Castle, not a
    very major label.

The bad news is that in the last six years, she hasn't grown as
a song-writer. This album is essentially indistinguishable from
her earlier ones, though there aren't any songs that really
stand out, as there are on her previous albums.

Of course, in a way, this is good news as well. As much as I'd
hoped she'd tread some new ground, I really like her previous
albums, and am pleased to get another album like them.

    (I never said I wasn't contradictory.)

For those of you who aren't familiar with Bonoff, she first
appeared on the scene about 10 years ago, after having written
a few songs for Linda Ronstadt. She's part of the same "Southern
California Mafia" as Ronstadt, Warren Zevon, Andrew Gold, John
David Souther, Wendy Waldman, et alia. If you like any of those
folks, you'll most likely go for Bonoff as well.

Her first album, KARLA BONOFF (which includes the three songs
she wrote for Ronstadt: "Someone to Lay Down Beside Me", "Lose
Again", and "Hasten Down the Wind") is also available on CD
from CBS, though RESTLESS NIGHTS and WILD HEART OF THE YOUNG
are still CD-less (actually, the latter is on CD, but only in
    Japan).

Just an addition: First, I'm really glad she's back; Second, I'm
glad she hasn't grown musically.......I love her stuff (music's
    not bad either) ') ')

For those who've never heard her....she sounds an awful lot like
Linda Ronstadt (back when Linda spoke English), however doesn't
quite have the range (the octaves are there, it's just that compared
to Linda, the melodies seem clipped), which is why Ronstadt covered
so much of Karla's stuff. Karla sang background on alot of middle
Ronstadt lp's. I recall reading a Karla interview once where she
said that she'd rather write for people, than perform her own songs,
since she didn't like the sound of her own voice. I can attest that
the voice ain't too shabby, and I'm happy she's continued to perform!

Jerry, thanks for the tip...I'm sure Rolling Stone will review this
    one (probably next year).

Good to hear something about Carla Bonoff. My only exposure (musically
that is!) is duetting with Christopher Cross on a track off the
'Another Page' album, the title of which escapes me at the moment.
However, the duet is superb. Her voice is barely distinguishable
from CCs when they sing alternate verses. I wonder if she has anything
    available here in the UK?

PS, I think ANOTHER PAGE is the best Christopher Cross album by
far and is one of my personal top 5 over the last 5 or so years.

Yippeee!! I found "New World" and am listening now. It's pretty
typical Karla as has been stated, but I think after a few more
listenings that a couple of tunes may begin to stand out.

I noticed on the barely readable liner notes enclosed that Peter
Frampton plays on 3 tracks and Kenny Edwards (who was an original
Stone Poney and Ronstadt backup player for his career...even going
so far as to marry one of Linda's backup singers, Liza Gonzales)
is sharing background vocal duties on a track.
