1274.0. "Gladys Knight" by VAXWRK::CRAIG () Wed Jul 20 1988 14:54

I've been going through a Gladys Knight phase recently and want
to pick up one of her CDs. I would prefer a greatest hits CD since
I only want to buy one. I am just concerned with the quality of
the sound (hiss, etc.) If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate
    it.

Hiss should be your biggest problem trying to collect Gladys Knight
& the Pips. Gladys & Co have been on almost as many labels as there
are labels. What you want depends on which Gladys "era" you want
to buy from. Motown has a GH CD available, but the real early stuff
is only available on various artists compilations ("Every Beat of
My Heart" is found on Motown's CD of VEEJAY artists). During the
70's Gladys recorded for the SOUL label (subsidiary of United Artists
    - the same label the 5th Dimension were on), then following a
management dispute couldn't record for about 5 years.

Best bet is to call your local big record store (Tower, Record Factory,
Wherehouse, etc.) ask them to look up what CD's (ask for both title
& label) are available. By the way, the hiss on Motown stuff is
negligable, but the remastering they do makes the music sound a
    tad harsh. Good hunting.

Go to the new CD store in the Shrewsbury village mall they let you
listen to the cd b4 you buy. They have listening booths in the store.
    No more trial and error!

I've got the Motown "Compact Command Performances" disc. The
only cut it doesn't have that I would like is "Midnight Train to
    Georgia". Sound is quite good.

re .1 (mine) Before someone jumps my butt on this goof (surprised
Edd C. didn't catch it), I mentioned that Gladys & the Pips recorded
on the Soul label in the late 60's/early 70's. That's true, but
it's not the same label as the 5th Dimension...theirs was "Soul
City" a subsidiary of Liberty/U.A. records. Sorry for the boo-boo.

"Midnight Train to Georgia" was recorded on the "Imagination" lp
on Buddah.....and is available on lots of compilation CD's. Check
the later volumes of "Oldies But Goodies" discs (i.e., #12 or #14).
