1272.0. "What is T.H.D. ?" by AKOV13::WANG () Tue Jul 19 1988 08:54

    What is the T.H.D. ? I am looking for a stereo system (CD included)
    to buy; and I found that T.H.D. vary by models and manufacturing.
    Should I use the T.H.D. to judge performance ? The lower percentage
    the better ?

    I also would like to hear someone's opinion as far as 6 packs (maganize
    style) vs Sony's 5 discs (carousel style). Which kind is more reliable
    ? I know that Sony's new 5 discs player can take 3" as well and
    this should be a plus.

    Thanks in advance.

1272.1Total Harmonic DistortionAQUA::ROSTObedience to the law guarantees freedomTue Jul 19 1988 09:1213

    THD is Total Harmonic Distortion and the lower the better, in
    principle.

    In the case of amplifiers:
    Current US law requires amps to be rated at a given RMS power into
    a given load inpedance at agiven THD. So you will see a spec like
    "50 watts per channel, both channels driven into 8 ohms, 0.01% THD".

    Some manufacturers will deliberately raise the THD number so that
    they can spec a higher power rating.

    Sam,

     You might get more info on your system purchase if you ask it
    in the AUDIO notesfile (DSSEV::AUDIO)

     .1 is absolutely correct regarding the meaning of THD........

    Also realize that specs like this sometimes don't mean all that
    much. Some companies measure THD at one single frequency. They
    pick the frequency where the THD is lowest (usually about 1000 Hz)
    and write that in the specs. Others measure THD across the entire
    audible spectrum and give you a graph, or max and min values.
    Sometimes it's a good idea to just ignore the specs and 'play it
    by ear'. Listening is the best test. If it sounds good to you,
    that's all that matters. See the DSSDEV::AUDIO conference for
    exhaustive treatment of this subject.

1272.5QUARK::LIONELMay you live in interesting timesTue Jul 19 1988 12:558
    However, the THD produced by any halfway-decent CD player is so
    low as to be inaudible. Anything less than .1% is not worth
    arguing about.

    It would seem to me that the carousel changer would be more reliable
    over the long run.
