1259.0. "Icelandic Angst: The Sugarcubes" by LEZAH::SJONES (Sick for toys) Sun Jul 10 1988 10:51
It must get mighty steamy in Reykjavik! I just picked up a CD by
an Icelandic band called The Sugarcubes. Without doubt, it contains
some of the most exciting New Music I've heard all year. Real
pull over the car, put down the paper, stop whatever you're doing
and listen stuff.
The band has a mezmerizing lead singer named, as best i can tell,
Einar. If you've heard the cut "Birthday" on FNX you know what I'm
talking about. She's got this completely unrestrained, but sweet,
voice. A sort of nice-girl-from-next-door-gone-right-over-the-edge
voice; breathless, reckless, dangerous, no holds barred, but very much
under control and sincere (not calculated!). Just when it sounds as if
she's going to careen out of control, she lands with both feet on
precisely the *right* note. This woman has GOT IT. The real stuff.
Superb musicianship from the band, great tunes, exotica (the Icelandic
accents give this a real twist), and six bonus tracks! Great deal!
It's an Elektra/Asylum CD, no. 60801-2.

Ah, the lady's *first* name is Bjork. I don't dare try and spell
her surname. 8^)
Ian!

1259.2 | Bjork it is! | DELNI::S_JONES | Mental as anything | Mon Jul 11 1988 14:10 | 4 |
| Oops! There are two vocalists listed: Einar and Bjork. I took
a guess and apparently guessed wrong. My apologies to Bjork...

| Yes, Bjork is the cute pudgy female singer and Einar is the nasty
Minimal-Compact-like male singer. These guys will be coming to
'murrica soon after a minor setback in which the INS decided not to
give them a work visa (just like what they did to the Chameleons last
year). Until then, you can pick up the CD which has about 5 extra
tracks (was that mentioned before) or see the video for "Birthday" on
MTV's "120 Minutes" program. Personally I wish they had done a video
for either "Cold Sweat" or "F***ing in Rhythm and Sorrow" (which really
has the asterisks in the title, I'm not just observing net etiquette).
