1256.0. "Toni Childs---3" CD Free Sampler" by AQUA::ROST (Obedience to the law guarantees freedom) Thu Jul 07 1988 13:24

An interesting development from A&M records....

In order to promote the debut CD from Toni Childs, who is getting
lots of critical notice but little sales, A&M and Lechmer's have
    got a neat deal...

Buy any two CDs at Lechmere and get a 3" Toni Childs "sampler",
one complete song and two excerpts for free.

Or buy her debut CD this week at a sale price of (this is not a misprint)
    $7.98.

1256.1First Impression of "Union"AQUA::ROSTObedience to the law guarantees freedomMon Jul 11 1988 10:1323

Well, I braved the mall Saturday and bought "Union", the Toni Childs
debut CD for, as advertised, $7.98. Unfortunately it wasn't marked
such, the register called up $11.98 but the checker had bought one
the night before so charged me only the $7.98.....

As for the music, after a pair of listens, I would plop it into
the modern singer/songwriter school, where the Martin D45 has been
replaced by a Fairlight. Toni's voice is a deep alto, reminiscent
of Kathi McDonald (to me) and Joan Armatrading (to my wife). The
songs are mostly love songs, although there is a nice song about
    Zimbabawe.

In fact that song, "Zimbabwe", and two other tracks "Let The Rain
Come Down" (did this get issued as a single?) and "Where's The Ocean"
caught my ear immediately while the rest of the album, while pleasant,
didn't jump out. We'll see in time how it fares.

The production is very even, particularly since this was recorded
in over a half dozen studios around the world, including some sessions
in Africa (!!!) with some nice "Graceland"-like backing vocals.
