1255.1 | Geez, I got the warranty for less. | HPSCAD::WALL | Desperado Under the Eaves | Thu Jul 07 1988 12:41 | 6 |

I bought a 750 last night from Lechmere's in the Greendale Mall
and got an extended warranty for $35, and a free CD (a special
promotion from, snicker snicker, Nimbus Records).

| Re. .0 : In addition to the differences you list, I believe that ES-series
players use "hand picked" components (at least in key areas) to prevent the
possibility of multiple components being at the extremes of their individual
tolerances and resulting overall in an out-of-tolerance parameter.
Also, each player is shipped with a small spec sheet reporting actual
measurements of certain parameters (e.g. frequency response) for that player.
Finally, I believe the 3 year warranty you mention applies both to parts
and labour.
I've owned a CDP-520ES for several years now and it's performed flawlessly.
However, I wouldn't argue strongly in favour of paying a lot of extra dollars
over a non-ES identical machine - I think Sony had some teething problems
a few years ago with alignment which might have made the longer warranty
look more attractive than it does today.
However, if the ES player has digital outputs plus the other ES attributes
we've listed, then for a fairly small extra cost it may be worth it to you.

1255.3 | I like them | FACT01::LAWRENCE | Jim/Hartford A.C.T.,DTN 383-4523 | Fri Jul 22 1988 10:43 | 12 |

The ES series is their high-end line. There are many extras in
the ES line that you don't find in the cheaper line. Like copper
shielding in some ES units, heavier chassis construction, much better
analog sections, separate power feeds for the different sections,
etc. You get what you pay for. I own a 605ESD and it's just
wonderful. Hasn't skipped a beat in a year or a thousand plays.
Great sound, very flexible. If you can afford the ES line, it's
worth it.

1255.4 | Not much difference.... | SNDCSL::SMITH | IEEE-696 | Tue Sep 20 1988 10:32 | 9 |
| I got the schematics for my CDP-C70, which includes the ES model,
and the only difference I could find was a handfull of parts (a
7404 for a buffer and an RF transformer plus a few passives and
the connector) for the digital output. The parts lists are identical,
with the above exceptions. I'm considering adding the parts, but
I'm not sure what I'd do with a digital output....

1255.5 | Looking for Sony CDP-7ESD | PDVAX::P_DAVIS | Peter Davis | Thu Dec 15 1988 11:18 | 10 |
| The latest Consumer Reports rates single and multi-disc cd players, and
their highest rating goes to the Sony CDP-7ESD. Now I don't normally
regard Consumer Reports as the ultimate authority in electronice, but
in this case, their recommendation seems to jibe with others I've
heard.
Does anyone know where in Nashua to get one of these for a good price?
Thanks.

| The Sony ES series is only sold at "selected" dealers, and usually
for list price. I am not aware of any ES dealers in the Nashua area.

Southern New Hampshire area? New York? Mail order?
Thanks.

1255.9 | Marlboro, Mass | ASD::BOOTH | | Fri Dec 16 1988 09:59 | 7 |
| I bought my ES player more than 2 years ago from a stereo store in
Marlboro Mass, downtown on Main Street. I'm afraid I forget their name
but if they're still there they should be listed in the phone
book. One advantage was not having to pay Mass sales tax by simply
demonstrating that I was a NH resident.

1255.10 | Sorry, No ES In Marlboro Anymore | AQUA::ROST | Marshall rules but Fender controls | Fri Dec 16 1988 12:10 | 9 |

Hi Fi Listening Shop in Marlboro recently changed hands. I have
bought from the new owner but only time will tell if he willl be
as good as Kevin, the old owner.
Kevin stopped being an ES dealer earlier this year as Sony pulled the
franchise on ES stuff since he was not selling enough!!! They do carry
normal line Sony and Kevin was in the process of trying to be
reinstated as an ES dealer when he sold the place.

1255.14 | Sony information number? | PDVAX::P_DAVIS | Peter Davis | Mon Dec 19 1988 13:39 | 11 |
| Re/ .12, .13:
I just called Cuomo's and was told they do NOT carry the ES line.
So, is that it? A place in Worcester, a place in Marlboro, and a place
in Cambridge? Does anyone have a number for Sony so I can call and ask
them? I just tried 800 information but they claimed to have no listing
for Sony.
Thanks.
