1252.1 | about the same | STAR::BIGELOW | Bruce Bigelow, DECnet-VAX | Wed Jul 06 1988 14:31 | 12 |
| From what I can tell, the D-4 is a value-engineered D-3. It seems
to have the same form factor, the same features, and roughly the
same price as the D-3. But I think the battery pack is improved,
if I remember correctly.
Just as an aside, I saw a D-88 a few days ago. This is a new offspring
from Sony that plays only 3-inch CDs. I saw it at Lechmere in
Manchester. It didn't have a price on it, and there was no one
around for me to ask. Since I really didn't want one, I didn't
go looking for anyone to ask.

1252.3 | D-88 = 3-inch only | STAR::BIGELOW | Bruce Bigelow, DECnet-VAX | Thu Jul 07 1988 08:48 | 12 |
| No, Andy - My D-15 plays full size CDs and also 3-inch ones without
a special adapter, but the D-88 is something else. It's about 3-1/4
inches square and about 1-1/4 inches thick. I don't remember if
it had a detatchable battery pack underneath or not. I looks like
Sony has finally come out with the player we've been hearing about
that plays ONLY 3-inch CDs. I really wish it had had a price on
it, just for laughs. How cheap would it have to be to be worth
buying if it only plays the little stuff, I wonder?

| 50 would be overpriced. what a useless concept.

| The most recent Stereo Review stated that the D-88 *would* play
both size discs. Hard to imagine how, given the size of the thing.
It's list price was about that of the D-15 +/- $20, as I recall.

| re: .5, .6
AH! That explains how they could sell it! Pocket sized, I guess,
but not very usefule. You sure can't play it in your pocket, and
it would seem like using it in a car would be risky at best. Portable
as in useful in a hotel room, I guess...
The way Lechmere has things fastened down with those metal bars,
I couldn't get it open, so there was no way to tell.

Re .1
What's the improvement to the battery pack?
Is the pack the same size so that it can be used in a D-3?
Rien.

| Back to the D-88 for a minute...
a lever on the underside moves the center spindle between the 3 and 5"
settings. the "hat" on the top half is moved by hand between the two
settings. the outer rim has a metal bar, which pivots on the opposite
corners of the D-88, so that in one position, it closes off the two
sides, for 3" playing, and in the other position, it allows the 5"
to portrude from *two* sides.
