I heard some cuts from a demo released for the radio stations,
including a new song cut just for this compilation, something
about a techno-machine oriented society .....
I am SINCERELY hoping that all the cuts are digitally remastered,
and that Ian has chosen not just the "hits" to be included. The
quality of recordings like Stand Up and Living in the Past is
appalling, and I would scarf up this collection if it meets these
standards.
I saw the Tull show here up in Denver this past June, and the injury
suffered to Ian's vocal cords in 1984 shows up loud and clear. The
band itself was as tight and interactive as usual, but he just can't
carry off some of the songs anymore. This is a shame, and is also
noticeable on the Crest of a Knave album, where it is obvious his
voice is electronically-strengthened. After just purchasing Heavy
Horses (a classic !), I long for the days of old .....

Could you be more specific about the injury that occured to Ian
Anderson in 1984?

Not sure where I read this, but I saw that some large number
(maybe 2 of the 5 LPs-worth) are "previously unreleased
songs" and "alternate versions".

| RE: .2
According to the program I bought at the "Oh No, not another 20
years of Jethro Tull !!!" tour, he suffered a major vocal chord
strain in 1984, which forced him to not sing a note for over a
year. The band then reformed sometime in '85 to perform as the
opening act for Marillion in Germany, and he strained it again.
The band also did a German TV show where it was quite noticeable,
and Ian was kind of apologetic when describing it in the interview
in the concert program.
It reminds me of how Elton John sounds now, if you listen to the
Live in Melbourne sessions, just a crying shame, in my opinion.

| Bought it today, quite cheap really at 23.99 - about $40 - as UK
procves go. 65 tracks, grouped into "Radio Archives and Rare Tracks",
"Flawed Gems and The Other Sides of Tull" and "The Essential Tull".
Very impressive. Digitally remastered and mostly NOT the original
tracks, live recordings/alternate takes/abandonmed projects are
all included.
If I can get my fingers to type that much, I'll stick a tracks listing
in at some point.
Sound 10, Quality of selection 10. Recommended.
By the way, Ians voice is much better on a track included here recorded
in May ('88).

| Andy - you list "Thick As A Brick" on Disc 3 - how long
is that piece (e.g., is it the whole original version,
or a pared-down version like they do live)?
Anyone - seen it in the US, or hear a release date?

| It is the live version - most of the "Essential Tull" tracks are
live versions rather than the originals, an attribute I like, mainly
because I have the nasty ol' vinyl originals anyhow. :-)
If it looks like a long wait (check with Noteworthy?), mail me and I
(or a colleague) will be over the pond soon, we'll come to an
arrangement.

1248.12 | Ian has trouble on "20 Years" | HPSTEK::WOOD | | Tue Sep 27 1988 12:31 | 13 |
| Getting back to Ian's vocal cord injury, I think it is quite evident
on many of the live cuts on "20 Years". One song where he is really
hurting on is "Thick As A Brick". I can't describe how his voice
has changed; it sounds more like a whining now compared to the strong
performance offered on the "Bursting Out" live album set (which
is due out on CD soon, although a few songs from the vinyl edition
have been deleted so that it will fit on one CD). It really is
a shame, and I am somewhat surprised that these inferior recent
live performances (in my opinion) would be part of a "20 Years"
commemorative LP.

1248.13 | Only half as "Cold" | COOKIE::KITTELL | Richard S. Kittell - Database A/D | Thu Sep 29 1988 09:42 | 4 |
| The one that really bugs me is "Cold Wind from Valhalla". That is my all
time favorite live Tull song. It starts out acoustic and transitions to
wonderfully electric. The "20 years" version is edited to fade out at the
transition point. Creeps.
