believe.

| Motown has a compilation out that has about 20 hit songs on it,
and sells for only $5.99 or even less. It is meant to be a sampler
and entice you to buy others, but it is also a pretty good
collection. I have seen it in most stores. (It has cardboard
packaging, and is bright yellow.)

Isn't this missing the opening song from the movie? I recall wanting
to get the CD (Contains the music plus "additional songs from the era")
but saw that it was missing my favorite song from the movie.

One of the problems with getting a compilation as .0 suggested,
is licensing. Lean on Me (Bill Withers) is a Motown owned song,
Stand By Me (Ben E. King) & When A Man Loves A Woman (Percy Sledge)
are Atlantic (WEA) owned. .5 states that the opening song from the
"Big Chill" (I assume Dave is referring to "Joy to The World" by
3 Dog Night) is owned by MCA records.
Movie compilations can sometimes bring all these songs together,
but these companies quibble so much among themselves about licensing,
whose label will do the releasing, whose label will do the
distributing, etc. that we find ourselves having to buy what's
available, then tape our own compilations.
Motown has a series of discs (commonly found in the $9.99 to $11.99
range), called "Music From The Big Chill Generation" - which were
suggested by the original soundtrack. They did license some material
from other companies, but mostly it's Motown stuff therein. These
and the previously mentioned sampler are recommended.
Other recommendations of "solid" samplers are vols 1-10 (5 discs)
of the MCA Vintage Classics series, The Atlantic Rhythm & Blues
'47-'74 (10 discs), Oldies But Goodies (Vols 1-14, so far), or some
of the goofy compilations put out by Rhino Records (Nutmegs, Soul
Shots, etc.) and stuff on the Dunhill Classics label (Toga Rock,
Back-Seat Classics, etc.) all remastered by Steve Hoffman (formerly
of MCA). Another VERY GOOD newcomer to the compilation scene is
JCI of Agoura Hills, Ca. and their "Baby Boomer Classics." These
are easy to pick out, because of their all white packaging. Everything
is digitally remastered from the ORIGINAL analog masters. Don't
mix these up with the later Baby Boomer discs on some West German
label.
Be especially careful of labels out of Canada or Germany - and stay
completely away from K-Tel, since many times you'll get re-recordings
of the original hit. If the label says "Original hits BY the Original
Artist," then you're o.k. Either of the 2 by themselves is not enough.
Don't be afraid to turn the disc over and read the small print,
checking for "asterisk'ed" items.
I hope this helps some of you trying to make decisions on what
compilations are valid.....it's really a jungle out there, and it's
easy to get taken !

| RE: .6
That explains it for me. Now I know why some movies advertise that
the _complete_ soundtrack is available on `foobar' Records.
I couldn't remember the title of the opening song, which is why
I didn't directly name it. I thought it was called "You can't always
get what you want", or "You get what you need". Whether or not
it was the opening song, it's the one I meant. BTW, who does it?

re .7 Well actually, "Joy to the World" was the opener, since it's
what Kevin Kline was singing to his kid in the bathtub when the
flick opened. "You Can't Always Get What You Want" was segued into
during the funereal....it was the best part of the movie for me,
since I knew right away what the tune was from the organ solo.
As an addition to my .6, the Rolling Stones are generally NEVER
found on compilations. If you do attempt finding this tune, don't
get the 45 RPM version, since the chorus is missing. I know this
is available on HOT ROCKS II by them. Great stuff !!

Yah, but the 45 has "Honky Tonk Women" on the flip.
Not a bad single, eh?

p.s. The Atlantic Rhythm & Blues series is quite good (I think).
