1234.0. "Jefferson Starship & Grateful Dead ???" by AITG::WILSON () Wed Jun 22 1988 11:51

Does anyone know if "Blows Against the Empire" by Paul Kantner and
Grace Slick has come out on CD ? This was the unofficial "first"
album by what later became officially known as Jefferson Starship.
For that matter, has anyone seen "Sunfighter" or "Baron Von
Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun" ? (the second and third pre-Starship
    Starship albums)

I'm also looking for the Grateful Dead's "Live/Dead" album on
CD. Anyone know if that's out there ? It's a double album with
a red cover and a picture of a woman standing in a coffin waving
a banner. From what I've seen in the stores it's just about the
only Dead album (including some very obscure works by members of
the band) that hasn't been issued on CD yet).

As mentioned in 1106.5, "Blows Against the Empire" is out on CD.
It's on RCA's budget line, which means you get the recording, the front
cover, and the list of songs, but nothing else for liner notes. I'm
glad that they're putting good stuff out on CD but why do they have to
    be so cheap about packaging?

I'm pretty sure nothing between Empire and Dragonfly is out on CD yet,
but with Dragonfly just released I suspect there's more to come. I
don't know about the Dead CD.

Thanks for the info on both Starship and Dead, particularly the
pointer to note 1106. Has anyone seen "Blows..." in a shop in
    Boston area ?

I don't know that I would be interested in a copy of Live Dead on
cd, the recording that is on the album leaves a lot to be desired.

Of course, if the master is fixed up for the disc then it would
be a Grate disc to have. You should check the sound quality before
    spending $$$$.

1234.6Volunteers by J.A., bad soundSCENIC::CLARKJ.R. "Bob" Dobbs is coming ....Fri Jan 20 1989 14:376
I just bought "Volunteers" (RCA), and the sound quality is *terrible*.
How do the other Jefferson Airplane CDs sound? Someone in the MUSIC
notesfile mentioned that "Volunteers" sounded bad before CDs, anyway

1234.7word of advice - don't buy VolunteersOWSLEY::ABBOTGypsy of a strange and distant timeFri Jan 20 1989 15:4528
Dave,
I have the only other Jefferson Airplane albums yet to appear on CD:
Surrealistic Pillow and 2400 Fulton Street.

I bought Surrealistic Pillow in 1984 as a German import, before the
domestic version was available. (Just **had** to have it!) The sound
is very good, what you'd expect from a recording done at that time.
I haven't heard the domestic version (on Grunt?) so I don't know if
it's better or worse. I've compared cuts to the same on 2400 Fulton Street,
and I can't hear any difference.

2400 Fulton Street clains to be "digitally remastered", but then so does
the dismal Volunteers. The sound of most cuts on this are about as good
as you'll ever hear, considering the Airplane wasn't the most high-tech
band as far as recording quality.

But Volunteers is a total botch job. If RCA had a published complaint line,
I'm sure it would be overloaded. If you compare the cuts on this to the same
on Fulton St, you'll notice the difference immediately - it sounds like
a bad cheap tape. I even compared it to the album (original pre-dynaflex
pressing) and even the old well-played album sounds better. This is one
CD I'll probably never listen to again.

Needless to say I'm very disappointed to wait 4 years for a new JA CD
and to get crap like this. I certainly won't rush out and buy the next one.
Although for some strange reason they did an excellent job with Hot Tuna.

Thanks Scott. That's really too bad .... I've heard Fulton St.,
and the sound quality is good, but I'd rather not have the compilation
as I was hoping to get all the J.A. albums on CD. Oh well ....

Dave,

If you want "Volunteers" I'll sell you my copy cheap.

There's 2 more Airplane CDs - "The Worst of..." and one on Pair. I won't
get them, as I don't like compilations either.

Anyone in Europe know if any Airplane albums (except "Surrealistic Pillow")
are available over there? Not American pressings, but hopefully German
or British pressings. I thought the universality of CDs would clear up the
problem of one country making better pressings (or masterings in this case)
than another country.

I dare not think about what they might do to "After Bathing At Baxter's"!

Funny how the Dead approve of their remasterings, but the Airplane seems
to go without a care.

This is making me almost want to give up getting back catalog material
on CD, and invest in a better turntable.

1234.112400 Fulton St. looks like the best we'll have for a whileKOBAL::GOODMichael GoodThu Jan 26 1989 10:477
I got 2400 Fulton St. because it was taking an awfully long time for
the Airplane albums to come out on CD, and I was tired of waiting.
RCA records was sold to BMG after 2400 Fulton St. appeared, and now
the albums that do come out have lousy packaging. I'd recommend
buying 2400 Fulton St. since the prospect for decent JA CD's from
BMG is suspect. (Surrealistic Pillow is fine though, as is Red
Octupus; both come from the pre-BMG days.)
