RCA has just released a CD of the original Broadway cast recording of Hair. A big feature of this CD is that it has several numbers from the show that weren't on the original cast album: I Believe in Love Going Down Ain't Go No (reprise) |- These were on the film soundtrack Electric Blues | Manchester England (reprise) The Bed The CD is over 66 minutes long. While I'm very glad they've added these numbers, I wonder why they didn't add the two other major bits of music from the show - the "1930's Music" and "O Great God of Power." The 30's music is reincarnated as the Party Music on the film soundtrack of Hair, but as far as I know "O Great God of Power" hasn't been released anywhere. Maybe they didn't have very good takes of those songs. To my ears, the sound quality and the performances on this recording are generally not as good as those on the movie soundtrack, but the spirit of the 2 recordings is quite different. While I prefer the soundtrack (and eagerly await it to come out on CD), I'm definitely glad I have the Broadway version too. The CD is ADD, and comes with a very nice booklet that includes a long description of the show by the original Broadway Abraham Lincoln. As the booklet notes, despite a good attempt at digital restoration of the recording, there's still quite a bit of distortion left. Despite all the quibbles above, it's a very nice release. It's really good to see RCA take the opportunity to make the CD release special, and not just a quickie reissue of the original album.

Do you have any idea if the movie soundtrack is soon to come out? I love this musical but the Broadway version of the album that I heard doesn't have anywhere near the energy of the soundtrack. Helena

The movie soundtrack version of "Hair" has been out for at least a year. It's a 2 disc set, I believe. Personally, I greatly prefer the Broadway version.

I think the "Hair" soundtrack was pretty easy to find for a while. I had a copy for a while, but I think I sold it when I heard that the original cast was scheduled for release. I believe I saw it at Lechmere and various other mall record stores. I'll keep an eye out for it.
1232.6 | Soundtrack at Tower for $$$ | BAVIKI::GOOD | Michael Good | Thu Sep 15 1988 11:12 | 4 |
I finally found the Hair soundtrack on CD. It's a 2-CD set, distributed by RCA, and was at Tower Records. Unfortunately, it wasn't on sale and was very expensive ($38!) so I passed it by. I'll be looking for an RCA or all-label sale at a well-stocked store. |
