| re: why buy the Tracy Chapman album.
Because it is great. :>
Here's a little more info... Tracy Chapman sings what might
be described as Black folk songs, though some of her songs wear
that label better than others. She has a remarkably deep and
interesting contralto voice. At one time she was a street performer
in the Boston area and attended Tufts.
If you've listened to the radio lately or watched MTV/VH1 you've
probably heard her song "Fast Car". "Talking about a Revoloution"
is good too; it's sort of a protest song, but TC seems to resist
being called a protest singer. "Last Night (I heard the screaming)"
is an a capella song about an abused woman; I can picture it being
sung in an echoey T station. I also like the songs "Can I hold you"
and "Mountains of Things".

Well, if you liked the first 2 albums by Face To Face (particularly the
"mellower" cuts), you'll like their new album "One Big Day". I actually
like this new album better than the first two, probably because the music
is "consistent" (i.e. all "mellower" cuts). The background music has
changed, but is hard to quantify (kind of a cowboy western beat to it at
times).

| Here's another strong recommendation for Tracy Chapman's debut album.
I saw her a couple years ago when she opened for a couple other folkies
(Shawn Colvin, I think, and Patty Larkin) at the Somerville Theater.
All the songs I remember from that gig are on the album, as well as
excellent new songs like "Fast Car." The rock arrangements of the
folk-like material are well done. She does her own guitar-playing on
the album too; no studio wizard taking all of it over. It's fine music
with a social conscience, and it's even getting airplay!

I would also recommend buying the Tracy Chapman cd. It's relaxing
music, with a great message. Sounds a little like Joan Armatrading's
more 'folkier' songs.
Great Music!

| She appeared in the Mandela concert Saturday. I had never heard
her before. Her style reminded me very much of c1960s folk singers. The
one that comes to mind is the singer who made "...Fell off the Tallahatchie
Bridge" famous. I remarked to my kids that it was the first time i
recalled a black urban folk singer. I am interested in hearing more
of her. At this point, if I could find a $2-$5 vinyl or cassette,
i would buy it. Am not ready to spend the $10-$12 a CD would cost.

it is really good. A touch of country twang. It's nice to support
local bands.

I have a few albums at home by a band called Face to Face. This
band is very hard rock oriented and sounds a little like AC/DC.
They may even be Aussie I'm not sure, anyway could we be talking
the same band? It's been a few years since they put anything new
out. Just curious

Face To Face is a band from Boston. The lead singer's name is Laurie
Sargent. I think you may be thinking of some other band, because
although they have done some harder rock songs, I wouldn't say it
was like AC/DC. Probably they're best known song to date is off
their first album, called "10-9-8". Hopefully, this new album will
take off.

Tracy is IT. Her music is moving, touching, spiritual, political,
full of compassion and complete honesty.
She lives in Cambridge. There have been a couple of articles I've
read about her in Rolling Stone.
Her music isn't false...it's refreshing. It is thoughtful. It
is beautiful.

| Being from Boston I usually try to give my support for the local bands.
Face to Face have certainly come a long way from the ear candy of their
first album, if the new single from the new album is any indication
(their videos have gone up in quality, by the same evidence).
Tracy Chapman, on the other hand, is so caught up in her own apparent
importance that it invades her music and turns it into more silly
let's-take-ourselves-too-seriously folk music. (Disclaimer: I like
folk music, at least things like Planxty, Steeleye Span and Fairport
Convention, so I really can't be accused of bias) For someone who was
supposed to be the new Suzanne Vega, she totally underwhelmed me.

I couldn't disagree with you more. Far from being "caught up in
her own apparent importance" Tracy's lyrics show that the importance
is in the message. I am truly at a loss to understand how you think
she is singing "silly let's-take-ourselves-too-seriously folk music",
unless you find apartheid, wife beating, poverty, despair, and
revolution for social change, etc. to be silly and/or insignificant
topics.

| I think her desire to be relevant is greater than her ability to
frame her point of view in anything more substantial than awkward,
albeit earnest, high school poetry. Her voice, reminiscent of
Joan Armatrading, is a pleasure, her lyrics, while I would agree
deal with legitimate social ills, are fairly pedestrian.

For someone who was supposed to be the new Suzanne Vega, she
totally underwhelmed me.
There was at least one industry magazine that thought the same
of Suzanne Vega supposedly being "the new Joni Mitchell". They
also felt that Vega wasn't even the "real" Suzanne Vega -- Jane
Siberry was. Disclaimer: I love all three (Mitchell, Vega, and
Siberry), so don't flame me if you disagree.
re: Tracy Chapman
I hadn't heard any of her songs until a couple of weeks ago, when
I saw a video on MTV. It was fairly good, but it didn't grab me
quite enough to want to pick up the album. If I see the CD used,
though, I may buy it.

"Debbie Gibson, the Kate Bush of the 90's ..." ??? HUH ?
Is this a facetious remark, or what ? Kate Bush is the most progressive
artists in England today, and will most probably continue through
the nineties .....
On the other hand, what does teeny-bop pop have to do with Kate
Bush, and vice versa ...
If I'm confused, please let me know ?
