1224.0. "New Jewel Box Design??" by AQUA::ROST (Lizard King or Bozo Dionysius?) Thu Jun 09 1988 15:09

I got a copy of the Dregs CD single which is being used as a promotion
    by the Ensoniq synthesizer people.

To my surprise, it came in a jewel box with an adaptor already mounted
to the single (removable of course).

Anyway, the jewel box was really different. The dark grey "tray"
for the CD was absent. In its place was a triangular arm which
elevates the CD out of the case as you open it!!!! It has a small,
swiveling latch which grabs the CD as the box closes so the CD is
tightly clamped while in the box.

The outside of the jewel box has a molded recess on the side opposite
the spine, to more easily get under the cover to open it.

Anyone seen this package on any other CDs??? Nifty...

I haven't seen any "shipped" with new CDs here in the UK, but they are
available in the shops (Virgin in particular). At about 1.50 (almost $3
depending on the day of the week), it would be expensive to convert your
whole library though! I wonder if they're any easier to use in the car?

The Mobile Fidelity 'gold' issue of Pink Floyd's DSOTM uses this
ne jewel case. It does seem much easier and nicer, especially in
removing the CD from the case. Now I don't have to bend the CD when
    pulling it off the spindle!

If you use one finger and push down on the spindle when removing
    the CD, a miracle happens.

Re .2, .3. Its amazing that out of all the CDs I have only ONE
correctly instructs the user how to remove and replace the CD in
its box. Ie, Press the centre and the CD will lift out with no strain
on the disc at all. To replace, place CD over spindle and press
centre. The disc magically falls into place.

Has this new box the same OUTWARD appearance as existing ones? For
instance, will it look OK alongside my existing boxes?

RE: .5

Its not clear (ie, I can't remember!) what happens to the rear sleeve notes.
The blue "lifter" occupies the central space used by the current grey spindles,
but the grey piece also supports the insert.

The external appearances are otherwise a clear plastic box of the usual
dimensions.
